Which K&N air filter for 86 RX Turbo ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all , I found reference to two slightly different K&N panel filters that fit the airbox in L Serries RX Turbos .

The first is K&N 33-2010 and the second K&N 33 2232 .

That second one is considerably cheaper and fits a lot of Subarus .

K&Ns site reckons both will fit .

Can someone with an MPFI L Series tell me if the 33-2232 is the best one ?

Also while I'm here , the air inlet hole to the airbox looks too small so has anyone done mods to get air more easily from the inner guard ?

Thanks in advance , cheers Adrian in Oz .

the stock airbox and filter will flow just as well as a K&N. If you are looking for more power look elsewhere like Exhaust.

Exhaust is a good place to start when working with a turbo car.

Opening it up to a 2" or 2 1/2" would be good.

You could also delete the airbox completely and just put a cold air intake on

the end of the MAF.

I'm not sure what kind of auto suppliers you have down there, but there are

adapters that bolt onto the MAF so that they can have a 3" or so pipe fitted to

them.

Don't - use the paper filters. They work better and no chance of fouling MAF's, etc. You won't gain anything by using the K&N style filter.

This is your best answer.

But you're going to do whatever you want.

I'm interested to see any mods to the lower half of the original airbox , I don't want air coming from a warm/hot engine bay so I guess I could find ways of ducting cool air from the inner guard or even from a duct under the headlight .

I'll get a link from K&N to show what they say is the correct one for an 86/87/88/89 1800cc RX .

Cheers A .

Hi all , we ended up ejecting all the in gard plastic garbage and opening up the feed to the air box base to fit a 1" long section of ovalised 3.5" exhaust tube . Naturally the inner guard was opened up to fit the stub section .

Still waiting for the K&N element though out results so far are good .

The down side of doing this to a 3 plug 86 RX Turbo (conventional dizzy) is that the manifold pressure rises to atmospheric much more easily so less of a vac signal to the distributors vacuum can .

My exhaust is now 3" to the back of the cat , behind the gearbox , and 2.5" through a resonator to the rear muffler . Not really loud but its about as far as you could probably go without unacceptable exhaust noise .

Getting there , cheers A .
