ABS light turns on after 5 min of driving

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 01 outback, automatic and 230k miles. about 2 months ago i had my front brake pads done and disc turned.

Now 2 months later my abs light comes on after driving for about 5 min. When I turn the car off and then turn back on it takes 5 min for abs light to turn back on.

Where should I start.

I am not sure if it is related but also when my car is off and I hit the brakes the dash lights come on.

????????

thanks you guys are the best

Jake

You will need to read the code(s) out of the ABS unit. You can do it by shorting a couple pins together on one of the harnesses. Then it will flash out the codes. Then you can look up what the codes mean. There is a good article on Endwrench with the procedure and details.

It's likely an ABS sensor on one of the wheels, but which one I don't know. Codes are needed.

It may be that one of your tone wheels has a lot of build up on it, clean out your tone rings real well and see if that helps.

The brake light/dash light issue may or may not be related, but is certainly not normal.

It is one of two things, a worn wheel speed sensor or a cracked tone ring. If you cant pull the codes do the next best thing, inspect them. The speed sensor should be perfectly cylindrical.

You can probably spot the issue pretty quickly with a visual inspection of the sensor/ring itself.

thte dash lights sounds like you have a back feed going on when you press the brake pedal. the power to the brake light element is jumping to the the tail? light element and powering up the dash lights???

is this even possible??

Yes that is possible for the light, especially with dual filament bulbs. Sometimes one filament blows inside the bulb and shorts against the other, then you get weird things happening.
