i believe it is the alarm i also have one on my 98 gtw.. you got a key fob...

Yes, definitely the alarm. My 98 OBW has one. You will need the key fob to operate it. Flashing light means alarm is armed. Push button on key fob to disengage.

Blinks to show that the car is locked and is armed. Push it to go into valet mode, I do believe.

It is an alarm. Someplace on the car, usually the left kick panel shold be a switch for valet mode. This isnt the kind to push for valet, i have one of those in the justy.

Yeah..that is the Alarm part of the 'keyless entry system'. I've had both - one with and one without. The alarm is an additional upgrade to the keyless system....there is a probably one of these under the hood:

As I keep waiting for lightning to strike, I'll offer this respetful disagreement w/Nipper - the Red light is also a button....I believe the description of its function above is correct - o - mundo.

And under the driver's side dash is the other button - brown (or black) - that allows the key fobs/remotes to be programmed and to turn off the alarm when the battery is disconnected>>reconnected.

I agree, I think that CODE ALARM used the led/valet switch but I haven't seen one in a long time.

I believe it is a factory unit (added by the dealer) which I believe were made by Code Alarm with a subaru part number.

The mode shuts off the alarm for the car wash, the mechanic, and the Valet incase they park the car with the keys in it.

To reset to normal from valet, is it as simple as pushing the flashing red button again?

If anyone would like a PDF of this manual for further reading, PM me with an email address.

Copied directly from the manual on my old 2000 2.5RS:

The status indicator/Valet button

HS1004BB

The Status Indicator is a high intensity warning light, located on the

dash to the left of the steering wheel. The Status Indicator displays a

visual indication of the security system’s status while creating a powerful

theft deterrent.

LED status

Off: System is disarmed.

Double-Flash: System is in valet mode.

Steady Flash: System is armed.

Fast Flash: System has been triggered.

On: System is in pre-arm state (and will arm when all doors are

closed).

n The valet button (built into the status indicator)

The Valet Button is used to engage Valet Mode (see “Valet mode”

Section). In Valet Mode, the security system will not arm, through the

siren will chirp and keyless entry features will function when the security

system is disarmed.
