ECU/TCU 20 Pin Plug? Is this right? ('95 Outback)

Featured Replies

So, I am going to do the "Sport Mode" trick to my '95 Outback. I looked under the dash and found the ECU, it has 3 sets of plugs going to it, and only one is a 20 pin. (The other two are 16pin and 12pin)

On the 20pin plug, #3 and #4 pins are un-used. I need to ground Pin #4 to access the "Sport Mode" shift map, but am unsure if this is even the right plug.

Are the ECU and TCU part of each other? Heres a picture of the Box and a picture of the 20pin connector.

Oh! Really? It must be well hidden cause I sure didn't see it on either side of the dash.

Anyway, so am I safe to say that the 4th pin hole on the connector is really the correct one?

I dunno if you familiur with the "Sport mode" mod or not, if you aren't I will paste the thread on here for you :)

I know nothing of this sport shift mode deal.... but I can tell you the reason you didn't see the ECU is because it's under the carpet on the passenger side foot-well.

AH! You know, not that you say that - I do remember seeing something on the floor when I stripped a '96 Legacy.

Well, to fill you in on the sport mode thing, here is a link.

I thought you said it was under the dash on the passenger side? Thats also a 2000 Outback. ;)

Hi,

For others that might be interested, this is sounds like the 'Power Mode' switch mod for the 1st Gen Legacys. It keeps the trans in Power mode all the time (except when the cruise control is engaged).

On the '89-94 models it 'lights up' the Power light on the dash for Automatics when the TCU/ECU senses a rapid application of the throttle.

I've read that the '95 - '9? models have the same feature, but no light.

BUT, this appears to only work on the '92+ Legacys...didn't work on my '90 or '91, until I swapped in a '93 TCU.

My install notes:

1. Disconnected TCU's B46/Pin4, connected B46/Pin4 to Ground

-Result - POWER Light in D, 3, 2 and Cruise Control still worked! icon_biggrin.gif

TCU pinout HERE.

Notes:

-When CC is engaged, the POWER light goes out. Hit the brake, and it comes back on (My '90 didn't come w/a Cancel option on the CC lever).

- RPMS @ 70 are same as before @ about- 2750. So I think the TC/OD are working correctly, too.
