March 14, 200422 yr i can't seem to get the damn thing to separate at all. removed the four long screws. do i also need to remove the pully assy.?
March 14, 200422 yr yes pully needs to come of and be verry carefull with the brushes and springs they will come out on you as well.
March 15, 200422 yr yeah you don't need to pull the pulley unless you're removing the front cover from the rest of the armature assembly. It'll take some prying to get the front and back covers off but be careful that you don't damage the brushes, bearings, springs, etc. inside or else you should just go find another alternator.
March 15, 200422 yr it is much easyer to do with the pully off thats why I said to pull it off. not as much of a chance to damage stuff if you go in from the front.
March 15, 200422 yr Author i don't have any sockets big enough to get the pulleys off so i'll just pry at it. if that doesn't work, i can always try the drop-on-the-floor method.
March 15, 200422 yr Author i got the housing separated from he stator, but it wont come off. i hammered and pried and pried and hammered an still nothing came from it. it just won't slip off the back. it feels as if it is caught up in the very center of the back of the housing. the housing closest to the pulleys will rotate feely and the other piece of housing will move back and forth only catching on those bolts. any suggestions?
March 16, 200422 yr Author replace it? i already spent the $17.99 on a new VR. i guess i could always return it. i don't know how cheap thy would be out here in our yards though.
March 16, 200422 yr remove all the bolts and screws from the rear of the case, this will help it to pull off. You are most likely hung up on the brushes, they tend to wear grooves into their runs. So if you pull all the stuff off the back, the whole VR assembly and stuff should come out still attached, and if you replaceing it anyways, why not.
March 16, 200422 yr if you have not ruined the brushes already you will soon. I used to work on alternators a lot. trust me take the pully off. cant you go to a local shop and just ask them nicely to buz it off for you? I just did that last week while I was helping my cousin . his alt. died on him away from home. we just walked into the shop and asked. how long have you been messing with it? man if I did not have the right tools I would just get a reman unit. good luck
March 16, 200422 yr a shop will do everything but rewind the damn thing for 100 or less, and that includes parts. i broke two trying to figure it out, because the damn things break all the time.
