My Maxima Alternator Swap with Pictures

Featured Replies

1996 Nissan Maxima Alternator 125 amp from junkyard in Portland $25 + 7 core.

Pulley is from 1965 chevy alternator "externally regulated".

Adapter pigtail used to allow for easy swap back should it fail.

"Custom Bracket extension" necessary for install.

Could you post a picture of a "Custom Bracket extension" please?

You can actually see it in the first pic. He just added a piece to be able to adjust the belt by the looks of it.

Is there any chance that someone cost post up a picture of what one of these Maximas looks like?

We didn't get the "Maxima" in Aus until the next model, but this isn't to say that we didn't get it just under a different name.

How much of a PITA was it to extract the alt out of the donor car?

I briefly looked at one in the JY and it looked to be under a number of the other components.

Down underneath the car and it sucks. I bought a reman instead for about $80.00 but mine is only 90 amps I think.

Why is there a need to swap the pulley?

What comes stock?

Just Google 1996 Nissan Maxima

ok. did that & getting 2 lots of pics, some of which include the model we got here, and some which look different.

Maybe it would be better to ask which engine, because the body type is irrelevant

From the 1996 it was easy it is on top/front, from a 95-pre it is on bottom, but the early years mount up easier to our ea82.

NIce work and thanks for posting the photos.  Yes nice and clean engine - very nice! Did you do that because the stock alternators are no longer available, price, or to have better AMPS for offroad lights, winch, etc?  Thanks

All can be explained here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/97208-bolt-in-ea-series-alternator-upgrade-nissan-maxima-alt-installation-guide/. Super easy and well worth it swap.

Stock alts are still available, but close enough in price to be worth just swapping one on, and yes more amps to run stereo, lights, and winches. With normal use it makes it so the lights don't dim when using turn signals or have your stereo on since you have a few extra amps to handle it.

Because the stock pulley is setup for a regular v-belt while a maxima's is iirr a 5 rib belt.
