I have an 87 GL 10 wagon. I want 4:44 LSD and 2.5 L SOHCL EJ trans 4:44 automatic or stick shift. What donar vehicle gives me 4:44 and 2.5 L SOHC?

 

 

 

early 2000s outbacks, i own a few with that exact package

 

444 is automatic only

90's up to 04 outbacks, legacy GTs, RS, and foresters have 4.44 automatics. I'm sure something after 04 does too, but those are harder to adapt due to more electrowizzardry. The only 4.44 manual in the US market is the 04-05 forester XT.

'04-'08 FXT, '04-'05 Legacy GT, '04-'08 Outback XT, and 2013+ Crosstreks (That's just the application for the ring/pinion set, newest supersession is 38100AB681, MSRP is about $400, but you can find it for a lot less online, this will fit in any Subaru EJ 5MT, that's what I did)

Here is the car. I've been looking at salvage cars and it seems promising.

 

 

3:7 geared pushbutton 5 speed.

 

I'm wondering if a CVT trans would fit in a GL.

I found this 2013 Outback, something like this may work. 2.5l with the six speed. I'm thinking that's not the DCCD trans? 

 

 

I ran across 3.90 final drive for the cvt. Same as the Justy ECVT. I've got three of those.

 

2010 2.5 cars are plentiful.

Simple way to remember auto's is all EJ25 96-04 are 4.44:  Outback, LSi, GT, SUS, Forester, Impreza RS

I presume later ones follow that same line but I'm less familiar with all trim patterns/years.

(H6's are 4.11)

 

96-99 won't have LSD.  those are best found in 2000+

cars101 delineates fairly well which have rear LSD, though folks have said it's not uncommon for them to act like open diffs with age/miles.

in general the auto's are easy to remember/determine final drive ratio, manual trans final drives vary more. 

You know, I'm a person that likes a CVT. In passing...the Justy 3.9 geared ecvt is rpm limited to 5600. The current CVT seem to still be a little weak compared to the standard transmissions.

Anything that new will have an immobilizer, which means it will be virtually impossible to get running on the stock ECU.

 

Mechanically, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to get a new CVT into an '87.5 or newer EA82 (if yours is an early model '87, you'll have the smaller transmission tunnel, which will make anything but a 5MT difficult, of course, looks like you've got a lift, which will help). But the CVT is very much computer controlled, and the whole system is very integrated.....you'll have an electrical nightmare trying to get it to run in a different car.

 

 

You'll probably want to stick to ~2005 or older for engine donors unless you plan to go full standalone engine management.

the swap you are considering is a huge amount of work,

even if the parts are free.

 

why not just swap in a dual range manual trans and call it a day.

you will have a ''hiway'' range for fuel economy,

and a ''low'' range for when you want ''power'' off road.

Thanks for your thoughts. The car actually doesn't have  a lift at present. I'll have to look at the build date. I do have three DR 5 speeds, however this car is too nice to offroad and will be a daily driver. 

 

My plan for it would still be 2.5 sohc with 4;44. 

This car was mfg. 04/87 I have proper lug nuts now and bought a new set of 195/55 15 tires. I have a traction wagon trans on hand too. But a five speed early sohc 2.5 4:44 5 speed LSD works for me.

A 2.5 dohc replacement 2.0 dohc would work for me. Like this.

the JDM WRX mtx from 2001-2004 had a rear Torsen mechanical LSD unlike the USDM VLSD 

they were also 4.44
