Has anybody swaped a ej series block into ea82t? I figure if I'm going to be changing head gaskets and a bunch of seals, maybee I should just put the sti block in at the same time. I know ej series blocks and heads are swapable. Thoughts?

Um, EJ heads don't swap... EJ25 heads swap onto EJ25s, and EJ22 heads swap onto EJ22s, and EJ20 heads swap onto EJ20s. You can swap some back and forth, but there's some detailed work involved. SOHC and DOHC heads for the most part can swap between blocks, but they have the be their respective blocks. (IE: SOHC and DOHC EJ22 heads swap on EJ22 blocks.)

 

go for the EJ257. The ej22T has a completely different block, and transmission, than any of the other engines. Nothing at all swaps off of it. Even the clutch is different. EJ22 N/A engines will use EJ20 or EJ25 transmissions, and can use the EJ207 clutch kit.

I know ej257 blocks can go with ej25 heads, there is just a coolant channel that needs to be adjusted slightly. Thanks for the info.

Why not just get a WRX engine? STi engines are still really expensive and legacy turbo engines are getting more rare every day!

WOW all this misinformation I can't believe it. Anyway, to answer your first question, yes, I have installed an EJ series engine into an EA82 series car, apparently you have never heard of UltimateRX. It is a car that I built using the RX as a start and installed an EJ20G engine with a 5 speed tranny into. As for head swapping, yes it can be done, but what is important is not the size of the engine, ie EJ20, EJ22 or EJ25, but what type of deck (the surface between the block and head) that it has. There are three types of decks on EJ series engine, open deck, semi open deck, and closed deck. The heads need to be matched to those type of deck. Note, the heads will bolt onto any type of deck, but the cooling passages will not match. Any open deck head with work on any open deck engine. One of the common swaps is an open deck EJ20G DOHC head to and EJ22T block. In fact that is one of my projects that I have sitting on a back burner right now.

Where on earth did you get that infromation???? Any EJ series tranny will bolt to an EJ22T engine and any head will bolt to an EJ22T block, but you need to heed what type of deck the engine the heads came off of before you do. What make the EJ22T engine different from all the USDM EJ22s is the fact that it has oil spray nozzles that spray oil on the inside of the pistons to help with cooling. The only difference in the tranny from other USDM EJ22s is that fact that is has a hydraulic clutch, later USDM EJ series cars have that same set up.

An EJ bellhousing is an EJ bellhousing. I can take the hydraulic 5-speed out of an Outback and bolt it right up to an EJ22T with little to no mods. I wouldn't bother though, because the Legacy Turbo tranny has shot-peened gears for a tad of extra strength.

 

And so much can be swapped between engines it isn't funny. I could put EJ22T pistons, rods, crank, heads (might be some cooling issues there though) intake manifold, pretty much whatever I want into my NA EJ22. I could put EJ25 heads on my NA EJ22 if I wanted, I could put new EJ257 heads on my NA EJ22 if I wanted.

 

There's a reason Subarus are commonly referred to as "Legos." You can pretty much just start taking Subaru pieces and build whatever you want from them!

STI engines arent that expensive i thought a short block form subaru cost like $1500 new.

Well to a certain extent he was correct, you can not match up a hydraulic clutch tranny on a cable pull type clutch. You also can not install an EJ22T clutch into a cable pull type setup. The bell housing is different, but not where it bolts to the engine, it is different where the clutch lever mechanisum is. These need to be a matched setup, but either will bolt up to any EJ series engine.

 

By the way, the EJ22T clutch is a push type stepup, it pushes the lever forward, which pull the throw out bearing backwards, since the throw out bearing is attached to the fingers of the clutch it pulls them backwards too and that releases the clutch. The cable pull type pull back on the lever whic pushed the throw out bearing against the pressure plate fingers and releases the clutch. Now you can understand why these two can not be mixed.

I have "heard" of the ultimate rx, but have not read much about it as I am fairly new to this forum, and to my rx. I spend most my time on Nasioc. I like the idea of the sti shortblock because, while still new, it is proving to be as strong as the ej22t, which is considered bulletproof. Also it has more displacement, and can be found for $1300. If I did drop a ej257 shortblock in, do you think I would run into problems with the ecu? Do the ea82t heads flow well enough to be paired with that block, or would it just be overkill? Duh, did I miss something here??? No, EA82T head won't even bolt to that block. I believe I stated that EJ series heads would, I never said the EA series heads would. So if you just got the short block, you'd still have a lot more stuff to get. There was recently a 95 WRX front clip for sale in Tacoma for $2200, that included the engine, tranny, driveline, complete rear suspension, complete front wiring harnesses, the ECU, the radiator, basically everything that you would have needed for the swap. And you want to spend $1300 for just a short block???

Go with front clip. Cant go wrong there.

 

EAxx's are legos with other EAxx's. EJxx's are legos with other EJxx's. There are also cases where EAxx and EJxx are legos too....but the matings are not as much. Example: Camber plates work. Heads dont. Complete engine/trans works. Trans only doesnt work.

 

Somthing like that.....anyhow, Ive got MRTrally Camber/Caster plates on my GL-10. They were inteded for any Legacy/Impreza application. Direct bolt up to the GL-10.

Can't remember the name of the collision repair place, but it is on 56th and Washington.
