Quick lsd question, just a lil diff

Featured Replies

So there's a thread on how to take the 3.7 LSD apart and put the internals in your open 3.9 LSD now my question is is there any other differential that works or does it just have to be this unobtainable Factory Subaru LSD? Because in my way of thinking if you're already grinding the carrier to fit the internals why not look for a beefier LSD and make it work I know the fluid ones fit with a little work but I'm trying to find a clsd, so I guess it's actually my question is if you're piecing it together you still have to get that hard to find golden LSD?

You can use the centre from any EJ LSD.

You'll need the stub axles from any Gen 1 Legacy diff, and you'll need to grind a chamfer on the edges of one side of the LSD carrier where it bolts to the crown wheel otherwise it won't fit into your case.

dunno how many models you got with LSD as we've been getting EJ20T models from 93 which always had an LSD, but our source of EA82 style LSD are extremely limited.

I dont remeber grinding anything when i installed my lsd in my 3.9 housing it droped right in also the datsuns uses the same rear diff and lsd on some of there cars and there are other less acceptable opions like a phantom grip that might slow down the slip but will eat your diff in time and then theres the good old lincoln locker if you dont need 4wd on a regular basis and dont mind pulling a axle my one question is why do you want a lsd whats your intended use

Most cases do not require grinding, IIRC only EA81 cases have the extra castings that do not clear the LSD carrier.

Only an r160 will fit in that case. But ANY r160 (used in almost every 4WD Subaru, still to this day) will physically fit in the case. But that clutch-type now-virtually-unobtaneum is the only one with bolt-in axle stubs just like factory, anything else will require a little workaround with CV axles (some are easier than others, I don't know off the top of my head, but there are examples out there)

Other diffs have been done, but require modification. The STi r180 is not much different externally than an r160 and has been done at least a couple times in EA Subarus. Adam NDJ was working towards an r200, but I don't think anything ever happened, and there was a lot of fabrication (it already has a nissan transfer case and ER27 under a brat...). I've also seen a myriad of different IRS diffs in EJ Subarus....

I've got an EA82 diff. Everyone I've spoken to in this country (and we've prob been doing it longer due to the lack of EA82 style LSDs available here) has needed to grind the chamfer like I did. Maybe you've got different casings, or smaller, crappier diff centres :P

If you get any R160 EJ centre, and then get the snap in stub axles from the 1st Gen Legacy, those will fit directly up to your existing axles with no other mods. We tend to use stuff from the 90s cos its cheap and readily available.
