October 17, 20169 yr Hey everyone, Recently, I got back from a holiday and had my 89'GL sitting there for a month. It got driven a couple of times, but was dead when I got home. I replaced the spark plugs and she was up and running. Ever since though, it's ran like crap. Shakes with a very low idle, back fires when changing gears/de-accelerating and has bad fuel economy. I came to think it could just be time for a timing service. I have all the gear, new water pump (while I'm down there), timing light, compression kit etc and know how to test each thing. However, I'm just confused as to what order each part should be tested in? Disty, Ignition, Belt, Carbu idle speed?Cheers all!Hayden
October 17, 20169 yr Is it carburetor or port? Check you spark plug wires.. I had them come off before.. runs like a turd unless we got all 4 connected and going to the proper location ha ha ha and if ya do the timing make sure to disconnect the green plugs.. Edited October 17, 20169 yr by Len Dawg
October 17, 20169 yr The first thing I would check is your firing order...see if your wires are right...best of luck!
October 17, 20169 yr Remove the distributor cap and wipe out the condensation. Also lightly sand tip of rotor with emery cloth.
October 17, 20169 yr Sounds like it could be an vacuum / air leak. hoses etc http://www.aa1car.com/library/vacleak.htm or maybe ignition timing retadred (backfiring) - 8 degrees BTDC @ 800rpm with vacuum advance hose off distributor
October 18, 20169 yr Author Awesome, thanks everyone! It's been driving me crazy. All of those are simple but sometimes it's the little things right? Pain in the rump roastI'll do all those things this arvo and get back to you guys
October 18, 20169 yr Author Tested and checked all the vacuum ports and hoses and they all seem to be working just fine. Going to hook up the tachometer tomorrow and see what I can do timing wise. Edited October 18, 20169 yr by haydenmtaylor
October 18, 20169 yr .. 8 degrees BTDC @ 800rpm with vacuum advance hose off distributor 8 on Carbureted models, 20 on SPFi models
November 13, 20169 yr Is the timing on an '86' EA82 with a Weber conversion still going to be 8 degrees BTDC?
November 13, 20169 yr All the Weber swaps I've done on EA82's makes me to move forward the ignition timing up to 20º ... So, try to move it forward a Little and do test drives at different timings, to achieve the best results. Kind Regards.
