February 18, 20179 yr Hey guys, So I was reading of the guy here who was making the wheel adapters but the company relocated and he lost access to the mill and lathe. Well, being that it is getting harder and harder to find all the parts and cars that we need to make our cars 5 lug, I have been thinking. I have a friend you is a genius and by the way has his own mill. So I asked about the wheel adapters and he was making the years ago for jeeps when he was into that. He said it was really easy. And said he would make me some, with me wanting to learn how to run the mill myself, he would teach me. I was wondering, if things go well and I can make more, would any of you guys be interested in getting some for our Subies? Chime in and let me know. I know I will be probably making two full sets to start off, so let me know.
February 19, 20179 yr Author Hey Bratman, did you every get a pair from the previous guy? I saw you were on the this. Did it not happen?
February 19, 20179 yr if they are built proper then you can almost guarantee you can sell them. problem with adapters is the original studs break because it shifts weight on the outside of the centerline of the hub. since people redrill, why not drill out hubs to heavier studs then make an adapter?
February 19, 20179 yr I had some stuff come up while we were waiting for them to get done. I had to withdraw from the buy unfortunately.
February 19, 20179 yr Author Well I am going to get this going. I can't believe with all the Subaru nuts on here that I couldn't sell something that we all want. So stay tuned people, we will have some Subaru adapters for the older awesome cars that made Subaru Subaru.
February 19, 20179 yr You know there's someone on here making 5x100 rear hubs (which is the hardest part of converting except for moving the handbrake to the rear) ok, it's more work, but you get better brakes out of it Edited February 19, 20179 yr by wagonist
February 19, 20179 yr The reason for my interest is because I just purchased a 2wd hardtop. I don't have any plans to 4wd swap it, and fwd xt6 hubs are harder to find than the 4wd versions.
February 19, 20179 yr Shannon, have you got a photo of a 2wd hub ? It "should" be simpler than the 4wd version, just a 2wd rear disc hub but with the 5x100 PCD instead of 4x140 ?
February 20, 20179 yr Unfortunately no I don't Dean. I'll see what I can come up with though. I do know that the rotor itself for the 2wd and 4wd xt6 are different as far as hat height. By how much I don't know. Edited February 20, 20179 yr by 86BRATMAN
February 20, 20179 yr Author I'm going to do some research, but,,,how hard would it be to make a new hub that is 5 lug that just bolts on? Take off the old 4 lug hub itself and then make a 5 lug that just bolts on in place? You guys that have had some of the adapters, please comment on durability or problems you may have encountered plus some have mentioned that we need the extra spacing of the rim? Is that true? if so maybe we can make the hub with the extra spacing. ????? Comments
February 20, 20179 yr Author Hmmmm, redoing the hub might be harder than just the adapter, after looking at it.
February 21, 20179 yr The hub is far more complex than an adaptor. The adaptor just needs some round bar turned down and 9 holes drilled (4 counter sunk). The hub has the spline to deal with. For an MY, yes the stock (Subaru) 5 stud wheel offset is higher than a 4 stud so you need to run spacers or find other wheels to keep the same track. Typically this isn't a huge issue if you go to wider wheels as the offset of the wheels is addressed by the wider wheel size. I don't believe this applies to L-series (Loyale).
February 21, 20179 yr Author Yes there is the spline, but also the mounting bolts of the hub are right in the way of where the new 5 lugs need to be. Just need to make a strong adapter and make sure you have new grade 8 or higher bolts for the application.
February 21, 20179 yr wheel adapters will work, just be prepared to do wheel bearings as it will push the rim to a more negative offset because of spacer thickness. i was just asking if there is a way to put a bigger stud in the 4x140 bolt pattern to help hold the adapter on. then use nice beefy 5-lug studs. i used adapters on a 280z, we had only wheel bearing issues. never broke an adapter or stud, even at 500hp
February 21, 20179 yr Author I will definitely do the bigger studs but we are no where near that hp rating. Is there a way to correct the negative offset???
February 21, 20179 yr it wont be too negative. i mean if you have say a +45 offset on the rim, and a wheel adapter 20mm thick, the offset off the wheel now looks and acts like a +25. it just moves the centerline out more, which can be good for added tire clearance for lifted cars. no way to correct it really and no need to. it will just widen the track width and give a little more clearance
February 21, 20179 yr Make sure to design the spacers with a retaining lip to the Subaru size (57mm from memory). This means the force is transmitted to the hub rather than on the studs. Cheap spacers don't have the lip.
February 21, 20179 yr Author Can you post a pic so I know for sure what you are talking about? Thx. I am going to go out in the shop and look now.
