Need help with engine noise

Featured Replies

I overhauled subaru ea82 engine this summer and it has been running fine, ive been beating on it pretty hard and revving it a lot. (rally driving no regural highway cruising).

This summer i changed all seals and gaskets, replaced cam tower O rings, new oil pump seal and mickey mouse gasket, new lifters.

It revs up fine but its low on power. Bent valve? Skipped tooth on timing belt? It has good oil pressure.

High rpm doesn't hurt them.

Looks like it's running smooth?   Skipping?  Check the deposits on the spark plugs.

Sounds like one of the exhaust header gaskets is failing.  Hard to tell from recordings.

That's a lot  of noises.  Some could be internal and some could be external, hard to say with so many.

INTERNAL

Check the timing belts again to make sure they are installed correctly.

Check the spark plug wires to make sure the firing order is correct.

      Possible Damage

You may have broken piston rod

EXTERNAL

     Check the motor mount bolts.

     Check the exhaust bolts.

No way is there a broken piston rod in there! You’d hear all sorts of nasty noises and ther should be some sort of hole in the block!

If one cylinder is down, it will show up by piling spark plugs one at a time (and replacing them before moving onto the next spark plug).

Cheers

Startup mechanism has come loose and 2 pieces are missing, probably sucked down by the engine. This is the worst thing that can happen.

Oh oh, are you saying and circling some part of the Weber? choke components missing or loose down its Venturi?

Something stick in between intake valve and valve seat?

A compression test with all plugs out for next step.

If something is stuck you may need to pull inlet manifold off and blow compressed air or desperately - water in spark hole to flush stuff backwards, turning engine over slowly by hand to open valves
