Going down the road in my 91 Loyale in third gear the tach read around 4000rpm at 65mph. Is this right? It is clearly shifting twice. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Could the tach be off? Should the trans be doing something different? Does it have a works trans with 4:11 gears?

That sounds about right, my DL sedan didn't have a tach in it and wasn't 4wd. But had the 3spd AT in it and at 65 sounded like it was at about 3800-4000rpm. Those transmissions just are not geared for highway speeds.

Edit: Now that I think about it alittle more it does seem alittle high, was trying to remember driving my DL down the highway. Sorry sold it about a month ago.

My '87 Gl-10 does about 3200 at 60MPH. 4000 sounds a little high. What happens to engine speed if you take your foot off the gas? (Maybe torque converter slipping too much.)

Hows your trans fluid? Maybe the torque converter isn't doin it's thang. My 86 3spd auto 4wd does about 4000 rpm @ 71 mph +/- 300 rpm, which sucks.

That sounds about comparable to What my 88 3AT Turbowagon did.. I am thinking about 3800 @ 70MPH.. Also, Turbo=Higher final drive ratio=Slightly lower RPMs at cruise.. So that would easily explain the 200 RPM difference..

I was under the (mis?)impression that all 3ATs had the 3.70 final drive, not just the turbos.

 

And that sig is ... aahhh... impressive. I showed it to my wife, trying to prove that I didn't have a problem, that this was normal.

i have had 2 cars with 3at trannys that have had the 3.90 rear axle stock.

 

 

made it nice when doing the d/r swap. did not have to change the diff.

 

they both tached out about 4000 at 65mph. so yours sounds right to me.

I agree that the RPM sounds right if it is a 3.90. Should be easy enough to go out and check.

that sounds normal for my loyale, it had the 3speed.
