EA81 & EA82 alt compatability...

Featured Replies

I need to know if EA81 & EA82 Alternators are the same. The RX died and is now sitting in a parking lot. I have 2 EA81 alternators in the garage and Im wondering if one could be used?

Should work fine. The only thing I have had problems with is the number of pullies and you can switch the pullies with an impact wrench.

Advance auto parts online catalog says they are the same part number.

you broke it already?

sorry just messin with ya.

you shure its the Alt.?

the battery is fairly new thats in it. It was a good used one I put in there not too long before my cousin picked it up. never messed with the alt. though.

Im sure you can find one or make somthing fit. if not let me know I may be able to find somthing for you if all else fails.

I am fully positive they are the same. If its a single pully type (which it should be) I belive even the pully is compatible between models (say between my 86 and my 82 brat) The double pully on some (like my 87) probably wouldnt work.

They are interchangeable providing the EA81 is also an internal regulator type. Other than that, the EA81 is rated at 55 amps maximum output and the EA82 is rated at 60 amps max. You'll not notice the difference.

I just want to get the thing home. Then I'll worry about the rest. Im pretty sure was the alternator. The car started to stumble off idle, and after a block or so it would have no power past 4k, then past 3k unless I were to feather the throttle. Then i came to a light where my stereo stopped working and the car started to loose its idle. After the car died, I tried to restart it but the crank turned really slow, so I just used the remaining power for flashers and to turn the windows up.

I'll take one of these EA81 alts (from my 84 so internal regulators) and get the car home.

When you get it home, charge the battery fully too.

Andrew took an alternator from his old '83 GL-10 sedan and stuck it in his '87 turbowagon when the alt went in it. Worked fine I guess.....

Gave my spare to my Brat to Torxxx for Haggard (86 GL wagon, I believe) and it worked just fine.

Hmmm so since they are different outputs either my brat has a higher output alternator or my wagon has a lower output :-\

I guess the second one since with alot of stuff on, the voltage kinda dips at idle. Ed's 86 doesnt do that  (hitachi Alt)

Took the Alt from my EA81 wagon and stuffed it in the RX. The battery had enough juice to start it up, and it ran and drove just fine after that. Im wondering if it was even the alt, im thinking it might have been the BAT wire. When i tried to remove that wire from the RX's alt, it was so brittle it just snapped. I put a new end on it, and tightened it to the EA81 alt and all is well.

that will do it, so will the 2 wire connector not connected

as always, check your grounds
