Rear wheel binding after clutch replacement

Hey Guys: I just paid a shop to replace the clutch in my 1986 GL10 Turbo Wagon (186K) and the rear wheels were binding badly. I took it back and they "adjusted" it and now it's not so bad but they're still binding, especially when turning to the left sharply at low speed. Three questions: is this normal? Will the binding cause undue wear or harm to critical parts? And lastly, will the normal wear of the clutch cause the problem to "fix" itself over time?

Not sure I understand how the rear wheel "binding" and the clutch could be related. This is especially true if your model is 2wd.

There is really nothing "adjustable" on the rears of gl10's anyway, as those have the rear disk brakes. I would get some clarification from the mechanic as to what was adjusted and why.

Given that you are experience "binding", my best guess is a siezed rear wheel bearing. This would have nothing to do with your clutch - unless the boys at the shop took your car out for a test drive during lunch, and got a little carried away...

On ea81's the nut can undo off the hi/lo rod and make it run in 4x4 hi when the lever indicates it should be in 2wd hi. I duno if ea82 box's have the same sort of linkage. Oh yeh is this a full time 4x4 or a dual range? Also do you have centre locking diff as if this was enganged on the pavement it would cause a bind (i think). Some more info would help.

i'm guessing the hill holder, it should be adjusted looser and the problem should go away.

Come on guys, he has an 86 GL-10 Turbo Wagon. I don't have my books with me to check, but I think the wagon was only 4WD. The tranny would be a single range, push button, on-demand 4WD. I too am very curious about this "binding" since replacing the clutch has nothing to do with the rear of the car at all (with the exception of un-bolting the driveline). I would definately ask the shop exactly what they did.

Pushbutton 4WD? Sticky selonoid(sp) and he's just running in 4WD?

 

When you push the button on top of the shifter do you hear any noises from under the center/front of the car? My SWAG would be a vacuum line being loose and the car in 4wd.

 

Any new lights on the dash?

NoahDL88 is right; textbook example of the hill-holder being out of adjustment. Most non-subaru mechanics don't know what it is or how to adjust it. (You will know if you mention it to him and he looks at you like you're crazy - it's a GL-10 so you definately do have it) I can't remember which brake circuit it activates but I think right front and left rear brakes. (I may be wrong) I had a similar problem after adjusting my clutch and loostening the hill-holder cable solved my problem. (They must both be adjusted at the same time) In my case I have faith in my ability to use a clutch on hills, so I loosened the cable so it doesn't do anything now.

I'd go with the HH issue too,

 

it's the only thing that makes sence. What else would be affected back there? With the "Dual Diagonal" braking system that might be the problem?

 

I'd dis-engauge the whole HH thing and see if it starts behaving again?

the hill holder would generally bind up while reversing. what about the vac solenoids, are they disconnected at the diaphragm, or on backwards?
