I recently purchased a 99 legacy wagon. I am reminded of how bothersome the placement of the cupholders is (I used to own a 94 legacy). So, I am trying to figure out an alternative. There are 3 options on ebay I'm considering. Two are the fold-down style that I am thinking might fit on the side of the console. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=63691&item=7972593530&rd=1#ebayphotohosting

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&category=63691&item=7971695551&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW The other is sold as a BMW cupholder. This one rests on the side of the console. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7967742547&category=63691&sspagename=WD1V#ebayphotohosting

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has tried any of these? or are there other options people have found to work?

Thanks for any help.

My cup holders are right above the stereo... could you think of a worse place to keep liquid? I keep my drink between my legs if I absolutely have to have a beverage in my vehicle with me.

Yup, right above the stereo and right below the heater-A/C controls. . . If you put a drink in either side both controls are blocked, on top of the spillage problem. . .

And to think they kept it that way for a decade. . . .

Now wait just one doggone minute here. I happen to LOVE my cupholder!

Had owned the car for a year before I even realized it HAD a cupholder, then one day I pushed the release button. Nothing happened. Well, nothing intrigues me more so eventually I pried the device out, then found I could remove the entire mechanism. It was, as expected, welded together with gooey soft drink syrup, so I cleaned it thoroughly and restored it to silky smooth like-new condition.

Yes, I LOVE my cupholder.

Of course I don't USE it. It's a pain in the butt the way it blocks all those controls.

But every once in awhile, say at a long stoplight, I'll pop it open just to witness the miracle of its operation. Then I'll push it closed, thrilling to its silky smoothness.

Then I'm okay for another coupla' weeks.

Yours is spring loaded? what year did they do that? As for the syrup problem, I was working on the wiring under the dash and it started raining. . .

I had already removed the cupholder prepotory to removing the dash trim (I was working on the guages). I had noticed that soda had spilled all over the cupholder (yes, I use mine) so I thought to myself "well, why not?" I put the cupholder on the roof of the car and closed the door. . . By the time I was done working on the dash, and had everything back together, it had stopped raining and my cupholder was clean as a whistle. . . . I dried it off and reinstalled it. . .

You're not gonna' believe this, Gnuman, but I actually went out to the car and popped the cupholder open--because it's been awhile and I couldn't for the life of me remember if, or where, it had springs!

It must. That little sucker flies 3/4 of the way open (then you have to finish the job by hand!!!)

Anyway, to answer your question, I have a '95 Legacy L wagon--and I love my car, cupholder and all.

thanks for all the responses! I had just found this site yesterday and posted my cupholder query without having explored the site much. Great group.

Today I removed my cupholders and gave them a cleaning. The whole pop-out thing works like a charm now. I agree that it is fund just to have them slide out and in. So much so that it is tempting to actually try and use them despite the risk to the radio. Don't think I will though. I am working on a new solution that may save me the trouble and expense of the holders from ebay.

Haven't had a chance to put my experient to the test yet. If it seems to work, I'll take a photo as it would be hard to explain otherwise. In the meantime, I am enjoying reading the posts.

Try the Wedge or Wedgie cup holder.

It's just $5 and you can get it at a Wal-Mart.
