June 10, 200520 yr Looking to do a complete paint job on my 84 wagon with rust prevention in mind. What type of paint job would you guys recommend???? What about the undercarraige (regarding rust)..
June 10, 200520 yr bare metal zinc paint then primer http://www.tikkurila.fi/pdf/metallituoteselosteet/metallituoteselosteet+ENG/Temacoat+GPL-S+Primer.pdf top coat http://www.tikkurila.fi/pdf/metallituoteselosteet/metallituoteselosteet+ENG/Temadur+90.pdf obviously use whatever is available to you locally. you have a lot of prep work if your serious about this, I hope you have a lift or better rotisserie.
June 10, 200520 yr Author So your saying sand to bare metal, zinc paint, primer, top coat, done..... I am not painting it, but would like to know what they should use and what their process should be. Who would you recommend if you were not to do it yourself???
June 10, 200520 yr check this out. 64 dollar paint job. he had no idea what he was doing, just took a couple pointers and started sanding. 64 dollars worth of paint and lots of sanding later and here's the results: http://www.xt6.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1440&highlight=paint+job i wouldn't believe it if i didn't know the kid! turned out great. 2 years later it's still looking good. some clear coat would have helped but he didn't want to spend the $ on it and was happy the way it turned out. the pictures look great, a little better than it looks in person, but an awesome deal for 64 bucks and some sweat.
June 10, 200520 yr here's a picture of a recent MAACO paint job on one of my XT6's that i don't drive: http://www.xt6.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1514&start=270 i don't know or care much about paint or what it looks like or i'd comment for you.
June 10, 200520 yr For 400 dollars you might be able to get the paint and tape covered at a good shop. If you are only going to spend 400 do it yourself for 50, cause unless you spend about 1500-2000 you won't get a good long lasting paint job.
June 10, 200520 yr True......what could I get for $400?? I painted mine for a little over $400 (this included buying air compressor) and it looks like crap. You get what you pay for http://www.mnchopshop.org/features/suparoo/painting.htm Scroll down to 'painting the body' I wrote this before I was done. I finished it since then (years ago) Lemme know if you want any gaps filled in.
June 10, 200520 yr i don`t think thats true at all.if you go to the right macco shop, and have a coupon for one of the better jobs, they may do good for you.i got my 360 painted by them 3 yrs ago, and the paint has held up beautifully.plus for $400 you don`t have to go through the trouble of sanding, priming, and painting and even having the chance of the paint running, or reacting.i would recomend them highly!but its up to you.if you have the time, know-how, and the car doesn`t have much rust, then its up to you good luck, jon
