wont go into reverse easily anymore since lift.

Featured Replies

I got my 3in lift in, but now it wont go into reverse easily. sometimes it'll go in and sometimes It just wont do it at all. It just go to 4th gear. Since my body is higher than the tranny it's harder to put it in, is it because the plastic trim around the stick shift is restricting it from going far enough over to get into reverse. That shouldn't matter though because it goes in sometimes just fine.

Have you though about bending the shifter just a bit???

I have the same basic problem in the SubaruHummer :-\

Mine does this too, i simply roll forward about an inch and then try to put it into reverse.. usually works every time...

I went to a mechanic and did the sloppy shifter fix. Now it works fine. I can actually feel my gears now. Before you could shift it and there would be soooooo much play in the shifter.

soobmater: I just ordered my tires yesterday. Now I just have to get a six lug swap and an alignment. :brow::lol:

awsum. so are you goin with bfg mudd terrains?

edit: sorry lol i didnt read your sig

i wanted those but i ended up getting a all-terrain version of them. wen they were out i will prolly get those(or swampers):)

My ea81 wagon used to do that with the 2" liftkit, I eventually learned the trick to getting it into reverse altho it did pop out if reversing more than a couple of metres. Strangely when I put the 4" lift the problem went away ... so I would say that you have no option but to lift it another 2" ;)

I wish my axels could take it, because I would raise it up some more.

An Ozified/BYB lift shouldn't affect your axle geometry.... Mine certainly doesn't!

... wont go in becuase something is blocking the movment, or the gears wont enguage?

Mine is dodgey trying to get into reverse and I often have to shift into 4th then reverse to get in.

If it feels like something is in the way; well look around and see what's in the way.

well your tranny is 3'' farther from your body, that will affect the way the shifter moves, trim the metal like previously posted or see if your shifter bushings and linkage bolts are tightened.

I'd suspect this being a cause before the lift kit...

Did he install the lift also?

park with your drivers door on the downhill side of a hill :)

or

cut the floor opening bigger

or

replace your tranny mounts

this was not a joke.

pay particular attention to loose tranny mounts. or cut that floor.

the tranny is only 2 inches farther away. 3 and nothing works, 4 and... well, i dont run a shifter boot or console anymore =].

they did the lift with only 2 inches lower tranny to keep the shifting as close to stock as possible.

I had trouble with reverse on a 3" lift in an 85 wagon, and made a 'Z' shaped bracket that lowers the piece that the shifter pivots in by about an inch and a half. In my case there was plenty of room for the shifter to move, it was more the angles of the linkage.

He installed the front. I did the rear. Before my lift all my gears worked fine, but they were very sloppy.

Back to the original question; is something in the way that you are hitting the shifter or linkages on? OR is it that the gears are not meshing?

It works fine now that it's fixed. The problem was my shifter was so worn out and loose that when you moved the stick it would barely move the actual linkage.

Glad it's fixed; now run to Wal-Mart and pick up some 235/75 R15 Liberator AT tires :brow:
