EJ swap complete. Copyright issues????

Featured Replies

I have just completed the EA to EJ swap. Probably the easiest engine swap that I have completed. (Granted I tried to save some time and orderd the adapter or the modified flywheel but that ended up taking much longer.)

I have a question for the board. I don’t know what type of copy rights are out there on the adapter plates. So far I think there are none since there’s a website with step by step instructions on how to make the adapters and modify the flywheels.

Why hasn't anyone spec'd one of these into a CNC machine or similar computer automated cutter? It would take me very little time to input it in, that way people could simply share the file. I can't get a hold of John (Mudrat79) for the life of me so I don't know if he would be offended or not.

Comments? Concerns?

There is no copyright or patent on an EJ to EA adapter plate.

John may take offense if you directly copied his design... however i'm sure if its not identical to his you won't have a problem at all.

I still need a ride in this beast!

Copyrights are for written word, so they would not apply to the given scenario.

However a patent would apply. If someone has patented the plate, then you could not make a direct representation of it. However there are loopholds to the deal, if you make your plate .001" thicker, and put an extra tab that sticks out somewhere, the it is "different" and perfectly legal, that is IF anyone holds a patent on it.

Its my understanding that unless you "substantially improve" a product you cannot get around the patent.

Here is my suggestion, add a tab at the top so that the dog bone can be mounted, cause that i don't think has been addresssed

There is no patent for the adapter plate. If there was you would have to make it 20% different than the patented version in order to call it a 'new' product.

Mudrat offers a kit. It's more than just the adapter plate. I think there is no CAD file of it because it's not that complicated of a thing to make. Dudes have made them with jigsaws.

Probably the best I know of . . .

I'm considering doing an EJ22. How easy (I've never swapped an engine) supposing I have a donor car. Asside from the adaptor plate, what should I budget for? Any idea how much I could expect to spend asside from the donor/adaptor?
