air lockable differentials?

Featured Replies

I saw on this toyota landcruiser site about these locking differentials they use for rock climbing that are locked and unlocked using compressed air and was wondering if anyone knew of anything similar for subaru's?

Lockers of various sorts have been pursued for quite some time by the offroad old-gen Subaru crowd, without much luck. You're talking about ARB air lockers, which are awesome, and very popular, despite their expense, with the toyota and jeep crowds. The only way to put them on a Subaru is to install solid axles from a rig that they are available for. Qman did that in the rear of his brat a while back, but I never did hear how that turned out.

The readily available options for lockers that work with the stock drivetrain are: 1. Taking the rear LSD diff carrier from an EA82T car and installing it in your diff. 2. Welding your diff, creating a solid rear axle.

Ah, thanks snowman, I hadn't heard of those before, but maybe that's why some of the landcruisers on ebay have onboard air compressors installed in the back.

A lot of people run on board air on their trucks for ARB air lockers and also for airing down their bead-locked tires to like 8 psi for maximum grip while rock crawling.

The r200 diff has arb lockers available for it.

And its a well known swap for r160 (all subarus have r160s, well, almost all) equipped datsuns

fueling the fire, I know.

ARB Lockers are hot stuff, but they're expensive...

Might not be worth it on the Subaru (oops, didn't mean to say that. I'm so going to get beat up now).

ARB Air Locker ~ $700

ARB Compressor ~ $220

HEATHEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Though shall die the death of a 1000 headgaskets for that comment.

nipper

I didn't talk them down...

Okay, y'all go ahead and put your air lockers on your Subes!

And nipper! Never wish the evil of HG failure on a fellow partner in Subes! That's just terrible!

Gotta link for these ARB's???:brow:

Jay, I do not think these are great for Auto-x... and probably not legal even in mod classes!

They would suck for autoX...

Plus, you would add a ton of (unnecessary) weight.

I'm putting one (maybe two) in my Jeep this summer. I'll let you know how the performance is. (Oops, outed myself...yes, I own a Jeep. Sorry, guys.)

Here is the ARB site. They're based in Australia (in case you care).

Even if they aren't good for autocross....I'm purty sure I can find a use where they would be good!

Diffs happen to be unrestricted starting with street prepared and on up through mod. Not counting street touring though....

Any more info on the r200 swap?

But anyway...

Subarus should perform of-road excellently with air lockers. Finding a proper application is the hard part.

I can't seem to find very many applications for the air lockers...except Toyotas and Dana axles.
