January 31, 200719 yr Need info on a transmission problem. I can get the car into 4-wheel drive, no problem. But it is extremely hard to get out of it, with a loud clunking sound coming from directly under the gearshift. What is it?
January 31, 200719 yr is this a PT4WD push button 4WD trans or something else? what do you mean it's hard to get out? are you moving, in snow, off road, sitting still....
January 31, 200719 yr Sounds as if the center case is binding. This will result if your tires are not matched. Check all four for the same - size, brand, and pressure. This can also happen if you use the 4wd on surfaces that provide too much traction. To relieve the bind select reverse and back up for twenty feet or so. Hope this helps.
January 31, 200719 yr This happens in the loyale when in 4wd on pavement. Had mismatched tires to begin with, but still does it a little. 4WD off road or snow only:burnout:
January 31, 200719 yr Make sure that ur using the clutch to shift in and out of 4 hi or 4 lo and back to 2wd. Like there saying make sure ur tires are all the same size.

Also if that all seems right we had the same problem with my brothers wagon when got it because it had a 3.7 ratio diff in the back and a 3.9 ratio in the front. As for checking your front diff ratio, I have no idea.
February 1, 200719 yr +1, execpt I don't think the brand and pressure matter too much. They do if you want it to work smoothly. If everything is setup correctly you should be able to go in and out of 4WD high at freeway speeds without using the clutch, and with no resistance of the lever. GD

I understand that in a straight mud runner, a faster front axle will help pull the front around where you want to go. But if it was locked on pavement, it would fail in short order. Did you guys swap it back or something?
