rev limiter

Featured Replies

I have not a clue as to the ea82, never owned one... the ej22 90-94 is 6.5k rpm and 95-up is 6.2k rpm

do the ea82's have rev limiters? does the ej22?

EA82s do not have one unless they added them near the end of their run. The stock ECU for an EJ22 dose have one.

only EA82 rev limiter is the weak valve springs.....valve float comes at about 7k (depending on the condition of yours, my '85 would hit about 6800, both '88s could break 7k, and my '92 loyale could hit 7200).

Gl-10s with digital dash will beep an annoying alarm at you if you go over 6000 rpm, but the motor will continue to rev.

STUPID AUTOMATIC TRANNY!

I want my dash to beep at me, imma drop it down into 2nd gear and see this for myself......

It may only be on the 5 speed models, and it's not only the GL-10's because the EA81 digi's did that too and the digi came in plain GL's in the EA81 days - probably in the EA82's as well.

well I've been revving it as high as I could all afternoon... haven't heard a beep, but I haven't limited it to second gear, either (its raining REAL bad down here this afternoon)

However, i DO have to say that I absolutely LOVE the growl this rinky-dink engine puts out at 5000+ RPMs.. that noise that screams to the uninitiated "Dont you think i am about to fly apart?!?!?!?! HAHAHAHA!!!" but those of us who know realize its just trying to breathe 1.8 liters at 5500 RPM through those tiny tiny siamesed ports

yeah, theres this bang or clunk noise that comes if you hold the rpms too high too long. the tell tail sign of the specific situation is the oil on the road behind you

At unknown rpms in the ea81 hatch, Std no tach(for now), it screams "i'm suffocating you bastard, shift"...

is that what it was growling at me??? sounds about right, maybe the ea8*2* says something a little different with essentially the same meaning.

In my EA81dc it made a weird noise above 7K. But I'm pretty sure that was not an alarm but the crappy flow of the air through the whole intake with the silly stock air box..

Sounded really nice at 8K RPM. :slobber:

My EJ22 hits it at 6.5K :( But still sounds great up there.

My EJ22 hits it at 6.75k, so you can go a bit past redline to shift.

My red line is at 5.5k on the tacho in my Brat(coupe dash.)

I'm wanting to build my EA81dc for 10K RPM like the air craft ones. That should sounds sweet.

Mine hit a limiter, a limiter of sorts, But it never beeped at me, It hit it right at about 6500 it wasnt fuel I think it was either timing retardation or just spark cut because it was a soft one, but it was definately a limiter.

This sounds like "valve float," although I wouldn't anticipate it until 7K or higher on an FI ea82. Valve float happens when the open/close valve events are coming too rapidly to allow the stock spring to snap the valve back shut, so the valve is never in the position it should be given the timing of the engine.

It just kinda sounds like suddenly nothing is being done right by the engine, even though some sort of combustion is still happening; after I got home the first time I ever did it, and explained it to my dad (it was an inadvertent over revving in first for some reason in my datsun) i told him how high the revs went, and he said "probably valve float," explained what valve float was, and my thought was that it sounded pretty well exactly right.
