I've decided what I want to do with the Brat, and I've got a few questions.... what axle ratios were availible (stock) for Toyota trucks, specifically ones from the 80s? Any different for the diesel ones? Anyone know how tall a 2L or OM616 engine is from oil pan to whatever's on top?

I want the Brat to be a real truck, RWD and solid axle, possibly 4WD but we'll see. And yeah I'm serious about this. I'm ready to get dirty and bust knuckles.

My brothers 84 4runner diesel is a 4.56 ratio, but that means nothing cos there is so much different between the US and Aus.

You want to go to a yota motor as well? If I were to do a solid axle conversion I would use a gearbox and t-case from a "normal 4wd", place it further back, use a flat 4 with the front diff just in front of it. Better center of gravity, still subaru flat 4, and you can get a 3.2:1 or even 4:1 reduction ratio in your t case depending on what you use.. I'm pretty confident that there is, can be made, enough room for that idea.

Go trailing arm and coils for the rear axle, not leaf. :slobber:

So its no longer going to be unibody?

Well, it will always have a unibody, not sure if it will be strong enough (probably not) to handle leaf springs by itself though so there's the possibility of a rear subframe.

IIRC from the pics it was still unibody, no subframe in the rear. Just made the hangers and reinforced them onto the subieframe

I don't know if they're stock, but a friend of mine runs 5.29's in his yota.

those are not stock

I beleive my 4Runner has 4.10s, I don't remember exactly, but I do know it's specific to the turbos.
