September 4, 200718 yr I may have a line on an EJ22 from a Legacy Turbo. I would not have access to the vehicle, just the engine and whatever is still attached to it. Is there a cost-effective way to get this thing running as a EA-EJ swap without the harness/ECU? Alternatively, does someone have a harness/ECU for sale?
September 4, 200718 yr I'm assuming you're planning on running the turbo setup, since that's what the engine is equipped with. That being the case, you'll definitely need a wiring harness and ECU out of a turbo Legacy. The turbo engine ran larger injectors, a different mass airflow sensor, different grind on the cams (not that it's a huge deal), lower compression and, obviously, boost. There are also a few sensors and solenoids that the turbo cars came with to deal with factory boost control. The long and short of it. Will there be a cost effective way to get the engine running? Probably not since you'll have to piece a lot of the needed parts together. Is it worth picking up the engine anyway? Most definitely. Those turbo 2.2's are stout little pieces. If anything you should be able to resell the engine and turn a profit off of it.
September 4, 200718 yr Alternatively, does someone have a harness/ECU for sale? Sorry, should have mentioned this in my first post. For all the turbo EJ22 info you could ever want check out Legacy Central: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/ Should be able to find the needed parts to piece together the turbo EJ22 setup.
September 4, 200718 yr hey mang,i have only ever seen one of those come up around here.so if you have the opportunity to snag it ,go for it! we can find you a wiring harness eventually..........but grab that damn motor! this message has been brought to you buy, your locally sponsored motor junkie cheers, brian I may have a line on an EJ22 from a Legacy Turbo. September 4, 200718 yr Author For such a rare car, I sure see a lot of them! Mostly still on the road, a few of them looking pretty clapped-out. This is in a 'yard, seems they got rid of the rest of the car long ago. I'll see what kind of offer I can make on it. Last time I was there they had an EA-82 D/R had been sitting on shelf for years. They were asking $360, I offered $100 if it was what I wanted. Alas, no neutral switch, so I passed.
September 4, 200718 yr For such a rare car, I sure see a lot of them! Mostly still on the road, a few of them looking pretty clapped-out. same thing up here. lots of them on the road. now all the local subaru guys are buying them up, and parting them out, regardless of the condition. that said, one of them parted out a tleg not long ago, with the intent of using the whole motor (harness and ECU aswell). and has since decided to use the heads and intake mani in his RS, and a standalone ECU. soooooo.....he should have the harness and ECU available. I'll ask. otherwise, it's not exactly cheap, but would be an extremely sweet setup. check out the Link LEM G3 ( http://www.linkecu.com ). full standalone, works very well with subaru motors, simple, only about 10 wires to hook up, but still allows cold start enrichment, A/C control etc. I wired one up in my buddies '98 Legacy GT, and it was incredibly easy! it is, however, about an $1100 setup but I think I'll be running one in my car before too long.
September 4, 200718 yr oh, you misunderstand.i see turbo cars on the road a bit.just none that come up for sale or part out.a regular ej22 can be had any day of the week.literally.but turbos just don't show up.cheers, brian
September 4, 200718 yr I see em all the time on craigslist - there's like three on there now. As for the wireing - just do it up with M/S GD
September 4, 200718 yr Author what ************ing part of "around here "don't you people get? Now, now. Simmer down son.
September 5, 200718 yr not to upset u monstaru but there 2 of those cars in a u pull it yard near me the engines can be had for $130 a piece and the harnes run $20. just dont have the money to get any
September 5, 200718 yr dude, theres a local import yard in reno, its where my metals teacher gets all of his EJ's for his rally buggy's. EJ's all come with harness ej18-250$ ej22-350$ ej25 dohc-1500$ i havent called him yet but thats what he's told me its where im gonna go for my engines maybe they'll have an ej20G -Dalton
September 5, 200718 yr You all do realize why monstaru is getting so worked up, don't you? The EJ22T that came in turbo Legacies is a closed-deck, lower compression, tough-as-nails version of the dime-a-dozen EJ22E. They're getting tougher and tougher to find as many of the WRX/STi guys are snatching them up for builds. Quite a different engine than a N/A EJ22E. I pulled the wiring harness and ECU off of a turbo Legy in a local 'yard with the intention of coming back in a few days for the engine. Silly me, I thought it'd be around when I came back! Sure enough, gone and up on eBay that very same day.
September 5, 200718 yr just for the record. all you people saying you can get ej22's for dirt cheap. true... i got mine for free. however! turbo ej22's are a whole different animal. the only thing similar between the turbo and non-turbo motors is the displacement. it is probably not cost effective to 'make it work'. however, if you pass it up and for some reason come by my way gimmy a shout!!! and um... i see lots of them on the road to!:-p

Silly me, I thought it'd be around when I came back! Sure enough, gone and up on eBay that very same day. So, does that mean you still have an ECU and harness?
September 5, 200718 yr Author not to upset u monstaru but there 2 of those cars in a u pull it yard near me the engines can be had for $130 a piece and the harnes run $20. just dont have the money to get any If there really are 2 Turbo Legacys in a yard near you, and the engines and harnesses are really that cheap, I'm sure you could find people who would pay you to pull them and ship/deliver/make available for pickup. I for one would probably pay you a good chunk of labour for the harness an ECU if I get this engine.
September 5, 200718 yr yea there are really 2 near me. just never had time or money to tear into them not to many people seem to know about the yard for some reason
September 5, 200718 yr chux,......are you serious?that is pretty much everything....... what? differences between 22e and 22t? yea. crank and rods are identical. pistons are interchangeable. only difference between the pistons themselves is the shape for the different compression ratio. valves are the same, intake mani is virtually identical (extra vacuum line for the Boost control solenoid).
September 5, 200718 yr So, does that mean you still have an ECU and harness? Yep, got 'em both still. The turbo harness is fully stripped and modified for use in an EA82. One switched 12V hook-up, one constant 12V hook-up and a few underdash wires to connect and she's good to go! Quite a pain in the butt to do, but the harness looks almost like it came from the factory like this. The EPROM chip in the ECU has been removed and a ZIF socket put in its place for ease of removal/installation of the chip. Still quite a bit to learn about the fuel and timing codes, but work is slowly progressing. And are they for sale? As the saying goes, everything has a price...:-p
