He was on here for a little bit and was pretty active in the off-roading scene here in Socal. I consider him my BRAT mentor. He was the one who walked me through a lot of my first repairs and SMOG woes. Well I hadn't heard from him in a long time and he never returned my e-mails and stuff so I googled him. I found out that in May of 2005 his ultralight crashed in San Felipe and he died.

 

I felt that it was appropriate to pay homage to him here even though a lot of your don't know him. I wish I had a picture of his BRAT.

 

Hugo was a huge Subaru fanatic. He had vehicles spanning generations of Soobs. Some of the projects he was working on was a 360 sedan, a turbo BRAT. His daily drivers were a BRAT or a red SVX.

 

I know someone is going to make the comment about seeing if his soobs are still with his family. I will tastefully go and see them. (I only met the dude once in person) I will see about that and if there is a possibility that he will live on in the cars that he loved.

He was around way back in the early EZ Board days....

Vaguely remember him.....but at least he went doing something he loved.

I shouldn't let this discourage my utter pipe dream of a soobie powered airplane, should I?

 

Naturally I was saddened, but the loss of an individual so removed from my sphere of influence is difficult to mourn. I can't be dishonest about it :-\

I understand. Like I said I considered him my BRAT mentor. He spent a lot of hours with me on the phone talking and working through stuff as I learned the ins and outs of my BRAT.

 

re: the soobie powered airplane. I don't think his ultralight was soobie powered. I remember him telling me that he was going to go get it from someone in the midwest. I think it was assembled. If he had built it I know that he would still be around. He was pretty meticulous about his BRAT.

 

In a lot of ways, the impact on our lives isn't felt until we are gone.
