need help deciding on water pump

Featured Replies

i need some help deciding which water pump i need. am i going to need the long one or the short one? could you guys take a look?

water pump

it's going to be installed on an ea82 w/o a/c.

Me thinks I see an oops. That looks an awful lot like the clutch and pressureplate and throwout berring........

If I remember right. For no/ac you want the pump that dose not have studs. Then again my memory hasn't been the best lately.

take the pulley off of your car's water pump and take some meaurements of the shaft length/clearances.. a picture you could take to the parts store would be primo. then compare the two different water pumps at the parts store to your info. they are visually different so the difference will be obvious. don't forget a new O-ring for the pipe that goes to the radiator.. i replace the elbow hose to the heater core pipe as well during a water pump job. AAAAND if you want to install the timing marks from an XT, they use the water pump's bolts for mounting.

does the pulley fit over studs on the water pump? or does it bolt to the pulley?

if it slides over studs, its the long one. if the pulley bolts to the water pump, studs in pulley, its the short one

Ask Jim Wood (86subaru), He will tellya  yup! mmm hmm

It should be the short water pump. I remember putting a short water pump on my 86 turbowagon (I later replaced it) and it had factory AC and to make the belts line up I had to put a couple washers between the pump and pully. Therefore from my mistake we can figure out this... factory AC cars have studs and a long pump. NON AC cars have holes and a short pump.

yeah jims wagon had add-on dealer AC, it had the bolt on pulley.

I am betting it is the long pump. 85-86 Turbos used the short pump, after that most used the long pump. Most if not all XT use the short pump. All in all, not very many use the short pump. But if you ever are in doubt, I would say buy both and take one back.

no matter what motor its on, the pulley with the BOLT-ON pulley is the short one 100mm

the ones that have the pulley go over the studs on the water pump itself, it is the long one 110mm:wave:

hey miles , i just got 2 new water pumps short ones, boot kit [ inner ] at a good price
