December 20, 200322 yr EA-81 here: I replaced my clutch with my engine swap last spring. It always had a bad shudder so I finally got around to trading it in under warantee at schmucks. Also picked up a refurbed flywheel. Popped all of the above in and now it slips bad. I even adjusted my linkage to the point where I have about 2 inches of freeplay before I start to feel resistance. As soon as I even touch that resistance, it is basically disengaged. I am thinking I got a bum pressure plate. Any ideas? -- Jeff
December 20, 200322 yr Sounds like something is basically wrong there. I've never had a car that would allow 2" of freeplay much less disengage so suddenly. If Schucks' rebuild shaved too much off the flywheel that would certainly account for your symptoms.
December 20, 200322 yr Yeah - grab a flywheel from the JY - you can get em off pretty easy without completely removing the engine - just pull it forward to get to the flywheel. Then you can either use it if it looks good, or get it turned..... my last JY flywheel was good enough to use, and it cost me $11 + tax. GD
December 20, 200322 yr Sounds kinda like the TO bearing/clutch fork is hanging up.. Did you clean off the shaft and grease everything up really well?
December 20, 200322 yr sound like the fly wheel is suspect. if they did not machine the steps properly it could do that. or as you are thinking a bad pressure plate. they are not realy known for high quality parts there so who knows. the disc is in properly right?
December 20, 200322 yr you should also try the clutch cable. I was having some similar issues and it was really pissing me off, finally the cable broke and i had to replace. it was like getting a totally different car. 23.00 and 20 minutes is easier than pullin everything again. It took me two complete kits and 5 times of pullin to get it right. thank God it only takes 25 minutes to pull
December 20, 200322 yr Author It was born in 81 but pretty much the body is the only thing still stock. The engine, flywheel, clutch, and transmission are all 83. None of that 7 7/8" clutch here. -- Jeff
