what is this noise?

Featured Replies

not sure what this noise is but i think its coming from the front underneath. it sounds like i'm dragging a chain down the road but when i look underneath there's nothing hanging down. it only does it while moving so i hope it isn't a wheel bearing or something similar.

Details on the car please.

Can be a heat shield, if you have those kind of things, or a backing plate for a disc.

You just ruined several od my possible answers.

Can it be engine ping? Does it change when you go left or right, or in reverse?

Does it change with the clutcj depressed?

no change left or right, or in reverse. it sounds louder when the clutch is depressed only cuz the engine rpm's drop.

Check the drive belts, make sure nothing is loose there. It can be engine pping, a cv joint, aloose brake pad, or a wheel bearing.

My brat makes a funny sound if I am off the gas. It sounds like a chain too but I know that it is a CV axle, It has done it before. You might check your motor mounts that is what mine is. the motor torques over and streches the axle out and kinda pulls the Axle apart, it doesn't break the axle but its putting the screws to it.

a more basic check . . . my RX was making a noise like that, it turned out to be the metal plate that backs the shifter boot (either the trans, or the d/r shifter) rattleing against the trans tunnel . . .

Wild guess. A rock wedged between the backing plate and the brake disc.

I'm with quidam and nipper. Get those wheels off the ground and rotate 'em. Hear a grinding sound? Rusted bent backing plate on the disc. Fix? Bend the crap out of the way and noise is gone.
