July 23, 200817 yr I just got a set of HID 7inch lights that I am going to mount on the top of my bumper, what I want to know is if there is any metal under there? what is the best way to install these bad boys? electrically; I am using a dpst relay hooked into my high beams w/ a manual off switch, so I can still use my high beams w/o these bad boys turning on when I'm on streets. THANKS!
July 23, 200817 yr Depends on the year of your car. The 85-86's had metal backing, but the later 80's had Styrofoam inside. The early 80's had stout bumpers, lots of metal. But the ones with the plastic shell had light metal frames.
July 23, 200817 yr Author it's a 90' loyale So what is under my bumper metal, foam etc? I just need a way to get these studs in something secure
July 23, 200817 yr well go out side and look under the bumper or feel under. most likly its foam under there.
July 24, 200817 yr Author ANYONE have any suggestions on how to install these lights...Any tips or tricks you gurus of the subie know? Thanks!
July 24, 200817 yr I would imagine, even if there is no steel there, that you could place flat steel on the other side where the self tap screw /bolts go up into the bumper. the long flat steel will reinforce it quite noticeable.
July 24, 200817 yr it's probably a lot like this... http://www.parts.com/schematics/7/7525420.gif so there would be a bumper core support that attaches to the car, but most of the metal on it is at the front... then there's foam around it and a bumper cover over the top of it... not sure how you could get through all that foam and get a good angle on the metal... seems like you would have to mount them to the front of the bumper... but you might be able to make some slots in the top and bolt some tabs to the core support... or take off the foam and cover and mount a nice piece of hardwood to the core... August 6, 200817 yr all of my loyales dont have foam inside the bumper, they only have a light ( 16 guage) backing frame , covered with a plastic shell. i think the lights would vibrate a lot, unless you mounted them with a heavier steel backing plate
August 6, 200817 yr light bar FTW Loyale bumpers are a joke. two tiny strips of metal top and bottom and then the very back mounting point of the bumper is mild steel. I've never liked bumper mounted lights because they will get destroyed. Get a cheapout bolt on light rack and throw em up there. u can run the wiring up next to the antenna unbolt the antenna mount slide the wires through and seal it up with some RTV or black snot in a can.

Got pics of that? I would rather that as I have an aversion to putting $300 worth of lights within deer/elk/moose/bear's reach.
