January 12, 200422 yr It sure would be convenient if an 8 lug wheel was available in 140mm. Does anyone know if there is such a thing? I have searched the posts here and find plenty of info on the 6 lug conversion. Before I do the 6 lug conversion I want to make sure that there isn't an 8 lug option. I plan to pre-heat the hub with a torch, then build up the area to be drilled with weld, then turn it smooth on a lathe. This way the stud has a smooth, flat surface to press against. Is this too much work, or should I just press in the new studs then weld them in place? Q-Man (& others), have you ever broken a 4 or 6 lug? SubSandRail (and now an 83 GL Wagon owner)
January 12, 200422 yr SubSandRail, Just for fun, what tires are you trying to run? I did the 26X12X12 routine. Could go to a 27" or 28" Glenn, 82 Hatch, well it used to be........ 01 Forester, bent but not broken......
January 13, 200422 yr Author 27" or 28" on a 15" rim, 8" wide. I like BFG All-terrains. We use them down at the dunes on our street-legal buggy's because they have flexible sidewalls and have great floatation on the sand when you run 4 lbs of air. I like the looks of the 27" super swampers I saw on Ken's Brat, but I will probably start out with something a little less expensive. This will be a daily driver, and don't want to tear them up on the highway. I can get a set of mudders for trail use later. SubSandRail
January 13, 200422 yr Well - your should check prices on the BFG's and the Swampers - they aren't really much different. BFG's are expensive in comparison to most AT's, and the Swampers are really a pretty good deal. GD
January 13, 200422 yr i haven't seen any do the 8 lug conv. but i've seen then run the 8 lug rim and the bfg all-terr. do go down the road a little smoother then the swampers if its going to be a tar baby
January 13, 200422 yr I think the question was, Is there an 8lug wheel that he can just bolt right on only using 4 of the holes? Right? I havn't found or tried any yet. I just used the Izuzu 6 lugs and drilled the two extra holes in the wheels. So far no broken studs but plenty of abuse:D
January 13, 200422 yr I already tried taking my 4 bolt hub, knocking two studs out (as recommended for 6 lug conversion) and instead bolt it to a 8 lug (ford 16" 1 ton rim) and its not happening.
January 13, 200422 yr Author Thanks for all the responses. I'll go for the 6 lug conversion and look for tires at the 4x4 show (March 7 9AM to 4PM at the Puyallup, WA fairgrounds). Last year I bought a pair of Desert Traks there for $20. I'm sharing a vendor booth and may have the SubSandRail on display. Don't really want to sell it, but lots of people will stop to ask questions and maybe buy something. Maybe somebody with more money than sense will stop by. I'd have to change my USMB logon name if I sold it. SubSandRail
