Weird Issues After 5spd swap and other stuff

Featured Replies

Ok first of all just finished the 5 speed swap. The guy that did it told me the tranny was hitting the muffler. It only happens when letting off the throttle at higher RPM and you hear a thud somewhere under and near the stick shift. Went to muffle shop and they warmed the muffler and bent it some but it still happens. They suspected bad tranny mounts but they are good and so are the engine ones. It seems it improved some after he bent it, any ideas as of what it is if not this or how to solve it? Another separate simple question, when I remove the MAF from the air box is there anything weird details like needing a new seal afterward etc. Will I gain or loose any power from using a cone filter and has it been known to damage the MAF?

I don't know anything about 5spd swaps, but I can tell you that others on here and going to want to know what year, model, trans etc. you're talking about.

Good Luck!

Between the y-pipe and this muffler is there any flexy joints at all? Normally the 4sp has a solid mount onto the exhaust at the back of the trans. Might be what you need. All that flex could be bad for your head exhaust studs and might also cause leaking around the head.

87' GL Wagon EA-82 engine, dont know any details on the tranny other than its a 5spd from another GL wagon. No flex joints anywere just solid pipe all the way back and it is mounted with a bolt to the rear of the tranny.

There should really be a flex joint behind the tranny. That is what comes factory and I've found it's necessary so that it doesn't break the exhaust or put tension on the head bolts.

Would some pics help at all? Im the second owner of the car and dont have any info on what was done to the exhaust...

I dont wana damage the tranny, and is really irritating in traffic.

Yeah, maybe.... because it sounds like an identical tranny to what came in the car was put in there. So, that shouldn't be causing any issues unless they messed up the exhaust putting it in, or the exhaust is messed up independently of the tranny.

I say get under there with a rubber mallet and try to find the noise yourself. Then you'll know for sure it's the exhaust.

Doesnt make the noise anytime other than letting off the gas at higher RPM. Its like a loud thud and if I press the gas for a second and let it go again it makes the same noise arghhhhhhhhhh lol.

Are the tranny mounts tight? I had a lose mount and it did that. Or maybe rear diff bushing

Yeah, it sounds kind of like a loose tranny mount (or missing.... it happens  ) or it also sounds kind of like a really bad U-joint or center bearing on the driveshaft.....

Forgot to say its a FWD. Second gear is also kinda tricky is that normal? Gotta pull back and kinda towards the driver to get it to catch, they finiky like this? This is my first stick shift ever so bare with me plz lol:banana:

haha. I guess it doesn't have a driveshaft then :) Still could be transmission or motor mounts. On the vague shifter... I'm not sure if that has the same transmission as the '82 2wd 5 speed, but that one is very tight. I've had vague shifters on 4wd 4 speeds, but in general, subaru shifters are fairly good. So.. not sure if it's normal, or another sign of something wrong.

Check the pitchstopper rod. Had bushing fail on one of mine, made a clunk when letting off gas.

This is on top of the engine, it goes from under where the spare wheel bolts to the top of the engine. Make sure the rubbers are good on this as well, both ends.
