June 20, 200916 yr I just noticed this today. I used to turn it off, fine like normal. Now it shuts off hard and shakes the whole car when it does. The 1st time it did this i started it back up and taped the gas and it backfired real bad. But didnt do it like that again but revin it up a couple times i can hear it backfireing through the exhaust. Its been exceptionally humid around here lately but i dont know if that a probabble reason. 1988 subaru DL buy the way. The overall running of it has been poor lately. Seems i need to really give it a kick to get it to move. Whats a possible problem i could search for. Ben
June 20, 200916 yr Author Sorry its spfi but its not dieseling. If you turn it off before this it would just shut off nice and smooth, but now its rough. Like it wants to diesel but just shuts off rough. It doesnt keep running though.
June 20, 200916 yr Timing belts? Dirty injectors? Fuel filter? My 87 wagon did almost the same thing last summer when temperatures got up around 90ish, but its carbed and it dieseled.
June 20, 200916 yr it Still Sounds like Dieseling Somehow... Does the SPFI have a Gas supply Cutting Device like Hitachi Carbs do? ... if so, I Suggest to Check it, but the Problem I Believe that is Caused due to an Dirty Engine, Let me Explain: Some Dirty Deposits on the Combustion Chamber can become very Hot as Hot Spots that can Still Burn the Gas / Air Mixture for a While even with Engine Already Shut Off. Also Dirty Gasoline, maybe it have some Water Mixed... I Suggest a Deep Clean -SeaFoam?- of your Subie`s Engine intake, Fuel System... Maybe a Fuel Additive if you Notice Water on the Fuel. Good Luck! Kind Regards.
June 20, 200916 yr yea it still sounds like its trying to diesel. i agree with 2.7 turbo though, start with the cheap stuff like that and work your way up if it doesent go away. mabe run a tank of premium and see too....but i do know how much premium is getting to be so....i would completely understand if that was something you wouldnt want to do.
June 23, 200916 yr leaky injector? fuel shuts off but gas still leaks out? would make it idle high too I think.
June 25, 200916 yr Author Found some other interesting possible culprets. Pulled the airbox off. Found a wet and dirty air filter. Took it off and looked at a dirty maf. There was definately some muddy water in here at one point. Im leaving the air filter out until i can pick up a new one in the morning and i cleaned out the maf but doesnt seem to of cleaned out to many problems. Looked into the throttle body and it looks clean.
June 25, 200916 yr i think it says in the Haynes manual, it doesent in the chiltons, atleast my chiltons. although i forget this some times, is this a MAF thats a round tube with out much in it or is it an AFM with a flappy thingy in it?
June 25, 200916 yr you should put a weber on it, no MAF...... okay enough of my smart idea. Get the MAF clean and stuff with some CRC MAF cleaner be careful with it. might have to reset the ecu. No more water holes. Hope you can get this right. Might need a junkyard run to get a replacement MAF. I hope you get Guido back up and running correctly. Oh, and put a llama in your life. June 25, 200916 yr Author Of all this brent this makes the least sence. Im not throwing a code. It is running far worse then it was before the trip but im not throwing a code. In all seriousness is the DL that stripped down they wouldnt have a CEL. I can try to check for codes but who knows. Ive already cleaned out the maf and ill be replacing the filter and pcv valve today. Its still idleing higher which blows my mind. I have no idea what could be causeing that.
June 25, 200916 yr Author And screw the lama i want a properly working soob in my life. Buy they way, check craigslist for more subarus to make your neighbor mad.
June 25, 200916 yr check all vacuum lines. also, does your car have a IAC valve. If so, might need to clean it with sea foam. The Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) can get gummed up or sticky, nd that can cause a high idle, least that is the case on the newer Legacy's Again I don't have experience with your engine, but if it does have a IAC check itand use sea foam.
June 25, 200916 yr You need to put the ECU in d-check mode and run through the full dagnostic sequence. Something is wrong but u-check isn't finding it. GD
June 26, 200916 yr Author A clean MAF and New filter helped a bit. Probally wasnt hardly getting any air with the wet muddy filter. Still has some problems so heres whats going to happen. Replace the PCV - because it probally needs it Clean IAC - because it probally needs it Run the D-check - figure out whats wrong and how to run the check lol Seafoam - because it probally needs it
