So i just picked up my 90 loyale and have 2 questions. There were 5 questions but the repair manual on here solved a lot of them. SO number one!

 

There is a loud sound coming from the back of the car. It sounds electronic. I found out the previous owner has replaces the fuel pump a couple time and this is sounding like just a really loud aftermarket pump. Has anyone else experienced this sound?

 

Number 2, the gas gauge dosent work. Where do i start to fix this? Possible fuse?

 

This was a good find in my opinion! Only 150K on original motor with no TOD! Working AC and clean inside. Outside is another story. Going to have to get cray with a hacksaw. What is the best way to cut out fenders? Hacksaw, grinder? Thanks for your help and time.

Oh and i have seen people remove doors on their Subarus for that off road look, can the body handle this without weakening the uni-body?

The sound you are hearing is nomal, I wouldn't worrie about it, the pumps are always loud on these EA82 cars (You'll hear it pretty clear in the cab) does the hum pulse when you have the blinker on (power draw)

 

As for cutting fenders, I used a air cut-off tool for a clean line, and it worked quick. most people will say air tool.

 

And no, taking off the doors won't weakin the uni-body. you are thinking of just un-bolting the hinges from the door jam right? I've seen someone take round bar an make half doors out of them for a rugged off-road look.

Alright just one more problem i still need help with, the fuel gauge!? It wont move at all regardless of gas level. Is there a fuse?

no individual fuse I'm aware of, might be the gauge itself - if you can't find one close to home shoot me a PM - I just sent a gauge cluster to a 'private wrecking yard' and could get it back if you need it

Pull up the trunk carpet, remove the access panel and pull out he sending unit.

 

If it's float is full of gas, or if it is otherwise stuck there is your problem. If it appears normal, disconnect the wires, and measure resistance through the sender while moving the arm. IF the resirtance changes smoothly, then your gauge is probably faulty.

If you need a new sending unit I just pulled one out of the loyale on top of the VW bus at state street wrecking. There was at least two loyales there for sure that you can get a new gauge from as well.

wouldn't it be easier to plug in a different (known good) gauge than open the tank and pull the sending unit? it probably is the sending unit... but... I'd rather take a few screws form the dash

 

yeah yeah it could be wasted time and he might have to go to the trunk anyway

I've seen a couple EA82's now where the wiring was bad between the sender and the gauge. On an old sedan I had I ran a new wire and it worked fine. I would ground the wire at the back of the cluster and see if the gauge moves before I went and replaced the cluster or pulled the sender. You can check the leads to the sensor for resistance without pulling it as well.

 

It will be a hunting expedition.
