Weber....Yes or No?

Okay, I have looked at posts. Some say mileage goes up, some say down. One says problems with adapter plates, some say they love it.

I am looking at Redline complete kit on Ebay for 320.00 complete. The kit looks to be the K730 with electric choke but when I put in my 1985 Brat, it says not compatible. The description and the redline site say K730 does fit it. Is there something I am missing?

My Hitachi needs rebuilt but I am so intimidated by it. Too much crap! GD! what say you? Thanks. Here is the Ebay listing. "Subaru 1976-1989 1600/1800 OHV EA71/81 Weber Carb Kit

This kit will work, it is the same kit I am looking at for my '83 EA81. The carb you are getting with the kit is the Weber 32/36 DGEV (Electronic Choke) it comes with everything you need, throttle linkage, Adaptor plate/gasket, Threaded studs and 8mm nuts.

 

Why it says it is not compatible is beyond me. Perhaps because your Brat it is a 1985, which is the year the EA82 body design came out, they didn't want to get the two motor platforms mixed up.

 

Bottomline, this kit will work for your Hitachi EA81 motor.

I want to say JesZek (Loyale 2.7 Turbo) did a write-up about swapping to a weber, but his uses the EA82 motor as the reference. Still pretty similar. I will do a little more searching and post what else I find, here for ya!

The "kit" is a waste of money. I've mentioned that many times in previous threads. The carbs are $199 all over the web and then you need a low pro filter ($20) and an adaptor plate ($35).... That's $255.... Not sure why they charge $320 for the kit. $65 for a (useless) instruction sheet seems ridiculous to me.

You also need to buy throttle linkage bracket, I don't think that comes with the carb, every site I see, all you get is the carb.

 

Plus, Shawn mentioned, there is a mixup by just ordering the adaptor plate. You don't get the correct one. This is slowly being resolved so I heard.

 

Also, you are not including shipping prices for these items, plus hunting them down, I can't seem to find all the correct items on one site while doing a google search. And I hate ordering from numerous sites.

 

When you get down to it, what is $65? if you are worried about $65 dollars, you shouldn't even worry your self with a weber swap, just keep running the stock crappy carb, and be happy with it.

You dont need a linkage bracket. Or anything else other than what i listed and of course plumbing bits for the pcv that arent included in any kit.

 

The kit is a rip off - plain and simple. I've done it both ways and I ve done probably more than two dozen conversions in total. I do know the cheapest, most effective route.

hey guys, Id love to have an ea81 wagon to do this conversion, but other than that I have no knowledge on the kit. That being said heres a vendor that usually has great deals on carbs, kits and such but they dont recognise subaru.

Note. there is some bad weber product out there but these guys arent selling it.

Okay, got the Redline kit on. Yeah it could be a little more descriptive but after all it is still kind of scary. Was not sure what to do with the breather hoses that come out of the valve covers. I left the drivers one alone as it goes into the intake and the passenger one I routed up and into the base of the air filter with the little black fitting that came with the kit. It seems to work okay. I started her up and she ran perfect. Adjusted the idle mix screw and found the sweet spot. It has a slight hesitation at first depressing of linkage then runs very nice. I have a new problem though and I will put that in a new thread. As far as Redline versus build it yourself. I liked the one kit. Buying it as a pieces thing is kind of scary since you have people talking of plates not lining up etc. Also there are a lot of people offering chinese knock offs under the weber name. I bought a chinese atv once that was supposed to be just a honda clone........It was not and I will not waste money and take chances on that again. Just cause it says Weber, it may be the chinese version. I did not want to chance it. Thats all i got to say bout that. Thanks for the help and encouragement. It still was kind of scary doing my first one. See my new thread about the engine acting up.

Adding my experience trying to get the hood to close over the Weber 32/36

Just completed a Weber 32/36 conversion for my '80 Brat GL. Saw another thread where the industrious owner did a killer job cutting up and re-welding the stock GL air cleaner to make it fit, but my replacement alternator prohibited me from dropping the air cleaner so low. 

 

I elected to use the Omix-Ada 17704.02 Performance Carburetor Kit Adapter. This part has a Weber equivalent - either of which run approx US $80 via most of the normal Weber sources (like Summit Racing).  But I found it being cleared out on Amazon for US $13. SCORE!  As of today there were 2 left at this price. 

 

20 minutes of grinding and polishing with my Dremel to take off the sharp edges in the air intake to allow for better airflow. Top it off with a minimum 1/2" thick rubber toilet flush valve O-ring ($2 at your local hardware store) allows the stock air cleaner to mount on top of the taller Weber carb without resting on alternator or being pinched by the hood.

To place the stock air filer's Box over that adapter, which is on top of a Weber Carb,

 

sounds like it will end being pretty tall... Doesn't it hit the Hood's underside?

You hooked up the crankcase ventilation tubes from the valve covers correctly newgen85brat.

 

Essentially you can use a small aftermarket mini filter on the passenger side (US model) or hook it to where you did...in the air filter body. This allows air to be drawn in from this side and exit out the drivers side to the PCV valve. Note the black arrows.
