  1. Radar detector , proper working tunes and cup holders , easy to grab cubby for drive thru / tolls. The network of folks here will help in a pinch. As mentioned , these guys are great here. Timing , the usual... Best of luck on his adventure.
  2. Yeah I agree with much of that - nearly equal - and I'm surprised to see fans of the 4RAT , haha the phone typed that but for laughs it'll stay ... 4EAT , and yes they have come a long ways from an EA71/81/82 dog to a fan favorite , to some degree. But up here used units still are pricey. And somewhat in demand in our state. No body inspections so cars staying on the road longer again. There's a local guy on Clist with one fairly fresh for $400. I'm thinking that's pretty great for my area and it's probably worth grabbing for stock to some of us. Good healthy banter on this one. Had a $500 lady owned beater '97 with older version 2.2 with manual AWD and tranny bearing chatter etc... Made me huge pay checks thru winter , way over 240k on the car , sold it to ctsuba who turned it over , car finally rotted out. That's like 5 full years of use from when I got it from the lady.
  3. Can't recall but I'm pretty sure they are a finer thread not found elsewhere in the vehicle. So don't loose them. Yeah folks use RTV or a favorite. Torque them nicely and you'll be fine with or without.
  4. To sum it up , I think for a lot of us with a few 4EAT's gone by we'd rather have the manual with wicked bearing noise than the automatic with similar high mileage based on history of repair/failure. My FWD five speed made noise from 185k-220 ish but lately with over 250k it's quieter and does not pop out of gear , synchros nice ... What can I say?
  5. I learned same as you , those flywheel bolt patterns allow for only one way that the holes will all line up. Place it on and rotate it until you're sure they are all lined up pretty. I also have a worn spot of teeth but rushed last time and now desire to swap in the one I bought like you. Pilot bearing is a pain but you'll get it. Whatever you have that works without gouging anything up. Seller on eBay or two are also board members , I think scooter0000 or some name like that has them listed as alternator needle bearings last I saw but they are what you need. Good luck !
  6. My considerations would be to start out down around Allentown and work my way across 78 and up 61 , stop at "hogweed's" place for some parts , then hit New Ringgold or whatever you local guys dictate. Some time before MUD season. I'd rather freeze a little than slip n slide. Yes ice is slippery too but too much to do whe the weather breaks. Early March ?? Earlier ? Later- not much !
  7. They're on eBay all the time. When I saw this threads title it was hard to conceive since I see them , the correct type for you and me , all the time. There is a Beck Arnley on there I am watching for kicks. It's like under $40 shipped. Hard to pass up. Good luck.
  8. And oh yeah , you've been here so long and helped so many people I'm just amazed I had anything to say "against " you. Me , I've never been any help here.
  9. Waaaaagggghhhh ! Rob , thanks for that !!! I owe you Dude , enjoy yourself. Just don't leave any stains.
  10. The sheetmetal rips and you need to remove the pedal box and have it welded. Hopefully your welder can stiffen the side wall up some.
  11. You have a common problem. Search "pedal box" for the latest post on what you're going to be dealing with.
  12. Try Danny W . - on eBay as dannybreadman , on the USMB as drivesubies. He's sitting on a lot of new old stock and you might get lucky. Otherwise you're going to hunt and find something close. Folks have done some fancy custon inserts too. Solid color with a Subaru logo ,etc... A TRUE restoration of these veicles is almost always impossible. But keeping it going is key and to many of us just keeping it close as possible to original is the best you can do. Enjoy !
  13. Update 2015 **** This job turned out well because of our man Subafreak. Turns out I had done a good enough job of JB welding the wrong sensor in the right spot. So Jesse swapped the pins on the connector and now all reads as it should. So the lesson here is that the new harness has to travel along the top of the tranny and the very last sensor is the lower one with the white insulating jacket. Info you'll want should you swap in a new transmission harness.
  14. Must be on my last hard drive. Basically , the round silencer up top has a hose which goes directly to the air cleaner box. You have that red stubby connecting hose to that brass fitting. There's one large diameter stem on the driver;s side of the air box. That's the normal destination for that hose you're missing. Note the diameter of the silence outlet and air cleaner inlet are the same. And the two large hoses coming from the valve rocker covers meet at the front of the air box. Going by a 1977 factory service manual ,but should still be the same as I recall. Yours on the driver's side has been chopped.
  15. Going to see if I still have the part manual page on that. Bit of a blizzard out now so I'm not checking my wagon just yet.
  16. Western 2.2 Legacy if you need the room or Impreza since you're Leprichan. Spend under $3000 and Guinness the rest. Easy. Done.
  17. Too much effort for too few people to appreciate it. Just have your manuals handy and help as you can. Lots of us have somewhat of a collection of manuals etc. And they show up all the time. Very kind that you offer but I see it as overkill. I've scanned and posted plenty here for vintage stuff - 70's mostly. Nobody from SOA cares. It'll be the same for anything posted that is more than say 15 years old to be safe. Screw them. Corporate attorneys can eat my rusty bumper. As you can see this thread went dormant for a stretch. Indicator. Just help as needed.
  18. Right along those lines above - I was told by a legendary 30+ year Subaru tech that those earlier EJ'a and up to around 96-7 , which our Legacy wagon was with the Same problem , that cylinder 4's valves or maybe just exhaust valve are/is sticky often due to the cold and of course some carbon build up. The way he explained it the exhaust port allows that particular valve to get more "weather" thru the exhaust pipe. His words , just repeating. And upon load will present itself. Our 96 2.2 had the same problem as first post. We would get on a highway entrance ramp near our home and same thing all the time. Pull over and as stated above it'll correct itself. Reason I had mentioned the coil pack was I just solved a similar issue on our 95 Impreza 1.8 but that also involved backfiring. I guess if you feel it's the cylinder 4 thing try as mentioned above. We had a couple accidents with that car so we let it go before ever truely solving that issue. As mentioned - valve job - or just try the cheapy methods first. MMO might help.
