  1. hey Miles Fox, i have a whole suspension, crossmember, and so on out of a 78 brat that i parted out froma wreck in a wrecking yard, didnt need them, but if you need them to make that brat work, let me know. email me at shoquest2002@yahoo.com also have a freind who travels to Indiana quite a bit, if you could wait on maybe that to get it there. not sure where he goes up there, but at least it is alot closer then texas. LOL
  2. oh yeah Garner, one more though, you could just give me the 78 brat, and i will give you a nice 83 brat running and driving, tagged and inspected, cold air, and great heat. just got new bearings today in the front end. and only has 100125 miles on it.
  3. the only thing i can say abou tthe wiring, is that yes you can cut it down quite a bit. but then you can also take the whole harness and drop it into your brat and have the lead offs for power windows ,locks, and much more, plus having better wiring that isnt as old and brittle like some of mine was. but it vcan be repaired. and garner, if you want to see anything up close abou thow i did things, just let me know and as soon as the rains stops and lets things dry out, i will be glad to shoot some more pictures of the area's you are wanting to see. the only reason it took us a year to build the car was due to time, we mostly just did it on the weekends and no not every weekend. there were other projects that were done like swapping a Mitsubishi Conquest from an automatic to a standard. and other things too. So yeah if you have the time and a EA82T motor tranny, and computer and the wiring, from the whole car, then yeah you can do it alot faster. i still am working on fabricating some better motor mounts, and so on, but like it say the way it is now, is drivable. but just needs some more TLC to a few more things. Good luck Garner. either way you decide to go, the best of luck, but just remember some of the guys might not like the idea of you using a EA81T motor. but me, just use what you can get and make the best of it.
  4. just got a 83 brat myself yesterday and it is great, it was LDJ1002's (on the board) it was aproximately 4 hours fom me, and i had to keeep it in 4wd as the front axels were cut out of the car. the drivers wheel had a bad wheel bearing, and the trans is making a sound that Adam N.D.J had a problem with, and it made it home just fine, and have driven it over 200 miles so far. it runs great, and didnt give me any problems. if you want to drive it, great, and good luck, and hope it does well for you.
  5. after the car has started is the fuel pump continuing to run, if not you need to find out why , check your fuse connection, that was a problem with mine once. doin something like you are talking about. but then again who knows, it could also be something like you not getting a good flow of current to your coil after you let go of the key.
  6. so i guess the rear isnt strong enought o run the car by itself with out the help of the front to take some of the load. well yeah i have some axels coming as soon as i get to the parts house to get them, if it breaks then i will just convert the car to a standard, as i have the tranny and everything else to do it with. just would have to go to the wrecking yard and grab a set of pedals. then i will be done. hmmmm another swap, is that an easy one or one not worth messing with ?
  7. thanks caleb, yeah it can take anything you want as long as you put your mind to it. here is the link to my photos of the 78 Turbo brat. http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo84 took a year to get it to this stage, and it is a blast to drive. i didnt build it cause i wanted these parts, i just made one car out of two i had. one with out a title, became one with a title. not bad for free.,
  8. no not really in corners, usually i have noticed it when i go to take offf straight. dont remember it happening around the corners, but today i will check the fuild under there and maybe change it too. just to make sure it is full. and yes it is permanately in 4wd until i put some axels on it.
  9. Just bought a 83 Brat with an automatic. my question is as follows when i go to take off i feel a shutter, not like the motor is missing but somewhere in the drivetrain. also a moaning or groweling sound can be heard when shifting into second. fluid is bright red, smells great. doesnt seem to do it all the time, but maybe every other or third time you go to take off. would this be in the diff , or is it the tranny starting to fail at only 99,990 miles on it, when i picked it up today for a mear $400.00 running and driving, with cold ac, and hot heat, and tagged and inspected. also, the front axels are not present, the car is being driven by the back wheels in 4wd mode. althought i now have 100,125 miles on it now. and runs great !!!!
  10. Oh Flowmastered, i was being funny, of course i just tell anyone who sees the brat that it si a stock setup just waiting for some more interior. nothing more than that. cause here in texas if i tell them what year the motor is, then i will have to pass inspection of the year the motor is. so i will just tell the inspection people it was one of those rare ones, and of course go to a hole in the wall place instead of the fancier ones. but yeah here in texas it is 25 years and 50 years
  11. hey fox, if you keep getting stuck atop of things, you might just get caught sooner or later. :drunk:
  12. unfortunately my 78 brat falls under a 89 category. as everything else in it is from a 89 wagon. LOL means i have to wait till the year 2014 to make it a classic. but that is ok, i can wait, i am sure it will stay together long enough.
  13. i dont know i have used jb weld to hold a spark plug in on a lawnmower once.and those threads were completely gone.
  14. yeah where the axels come out of the tranny to the front wheels it can be very tight if you dont do it right. and maybe even lifting the suspension an inch would clear just about anything. which was a thought for me when i put the EA82T in my brat. but i was able to do it with out having to do that. as for the EA81 tranny im not sure what that would do for you. but i know that the bell housing can be changed on the back of the motor. and i am not sure, but think you can change the flywheels and so on to mate with the tranny you want to use. i do know there are alot of people on the board who have probably swaped all kinds of motors and so on. but i havent done many subarus, just two. and mostly others like the fords and chevy. "sorry for the foul language on the board." but to me it seems like anyone wanting to take something and make something out of it means it is all good to me. i enjoy cars and alot of motors but very few trannys. so i can only tell you from my experience of doing my 78 brat, and hopefully going to do another soon but this time using the entire harness out f the doner car so that i can make it have power windows and locks, and features that werent available in the older ones.
  15. i have 4 heads EA71 from a 78 and 79 brat. the motors were both locked up, but can look into the heads and see if they are any good. so if you need some email me at shoquest2002@yahoo.com good luck.
  16. the ea82 tranny is wider and taller, and depending on how you mount it, it can get into the way of the steering linkage from the colum to the rack. i however have only about an inch of space, so i think i will be ok, if not, i can lower the motor down more to make enough room for the axels to come through on the driver side.
  17. Well ihave a EA82T motor and 5 speed tranny 4wd in my 78 brat, i used the factory cross member, but made my own mounts and tranny mounts. i didnt have to do anything to the tranny tunel, other than close up the hole in the tunel for the 4wd selector shifter for the brats old tranny. also didnt let the motor sit down on the frame, it is a little higher maye 1/4 of an inch off the frame rails. the swap was well worth it, the car handles very well, and is very fast. good luck in your search for the best thing for you...
  18. whiplash , it seems like you asked for advice on how to do something, and then gripe about how to do something we tell you how to do it. maybe i am the only one who sees it that way. but then again maybe i am seeing it all wrong, and not answering what you are after. But yeah i am with calebez on this on, let me know how you plan on pushing more flow out of the stock pump, it can only pump so much till it peters out with enough flow. i only used the fiat pump cause i knoew it would work, and i had one new laying around. besides the 78 turbo brat is a work of parts put together to make a fun ad fast car, but yet very respectable to the neighborhood ricers running around along with the mustangs who dont laugh at the car anymore. but yeah let us know what you find out. and let us know how much more you can squeeze out of the stock parts. :banghead:
  19. ok welcome to the board, and im sorry but i couldnt resist, for those who like to run higher boost, why not make an inlet with a nice big hole in it, and hook a tube to it, and just run a fuel pump wide open into the intake. i think you could run as much boost as you would want  Ok on the serious note now , yeah you can modify the FPR but it will only do so much for you if you dont have the head pressure from a good pump behind it. i am running a 81 Fiat Fuel pump, and i noticed a difference after changing the pump, and of course the FPR. Using the stock injectors. seems somewhere i read that the Lexus v-6 from a 97 model , injectors are suppose to be like 750 or something. cant rememeber numbers, but i used a set of them in a 89 Toy Supra running 19 psi of boost. fast car, but kept eating bearings and cranks. so we dropped the boost fixed the car and sold it to get rid of it. got rid of that head ache.
  20. Thanks Skip, didnt know which one thye had, i only know of the Toyota MR2's i play with, i can adjust the actual vanes spring load under the cap, and turn the screw counterclockwise, and gain alot more fuel. on the note of them having the hot wire. will have to play with the one in the 87 wagon and see what happens. i have a gas analyzer, and i can see if something changes, and of course performance. although it is a 1987 wagon, automatic, turbo. probably wont be able to tell much of a difference. but i will play with it this weekend and get back you all about it .
  21. The little screw on the MAF is for enrichment of fuel, but only a small ammount, it is set at the factory, to regulate the fuel supplied to the motor acording to how much air the MAF sees going through it. kind of like a multiplier, say you have 100 cfms of air coming in, EXAMPLE ONLY dont take my words for truth on this part about the numbers... the maf has a potintiometer in it that tells the computer that where the vane is, and the vane says im at 100cfms of air, so you are allowed to multiply x 2 to make up the fuel mixture for it, so if you turn it one way you will notice a slight difference, but nothing really noticable. so you could say you could move the multiplier by one or two points, maybe more. but not enough to really make a difference even for the turbo motors. cause the O2 sensor will correct you when it see's u running richer, and the computer will adjust to lean it back out. LOL gotta love those computers. the only purpose for the screw is to basiclly set a point for the computer, and the computer has its margines to ride in, so the screw makes that happen. and not give you a check engine light. but you would really see a fuel inchrichment if you took out the O2 sensor or unpluged it. although you would have a check engine light on, and black smoke coming out the rear, now who wants that. so the best way to richen your fuel with a turbo and high boost levels is to run a second set of fuel injectors set up through a boost controller and when you reach a certain ammount of boost it will open the other fuel injectors and give you more gas for the higher boost, but usually only needed for running 16 PSI and up with boost levels. Sorry didnt mean to be so lengthly about it. but i have seen people do it to get what they needed. never did it myself. Oh yeah that black cap is there so people dont mess with it !!! but that is why we are always wanting to find out what they dont want us to know about...
  22. i msure there might have ben some 60's through tome late 80's maybe even 90's but when you are towing a car at 70 on the highway, you cant get much of a look, saw some wagons and so on but vouldnt tell you much abou tthem, except i saw a bunch of sube's in one spot the coolest.....
  23. Ok guys and girls it is between macalester and wagoner. right off the high way, i will be going back through there again shortly to pick up another car, and i will get the info on address, type of business and maybe even shoot some pics of the lot of cars so that everyone else can see them. i thought i t was the coolest thing, kiind of like a sube meet, but no people....
  24. Went to Tulsa earlier today to pick up a car, sad to say it wasnt a sube, but it was a great find. but on the way there i passed this one peice of propery off of hwy 75/69 that has over 20 older subes out for display, it was nice to be able to see that many all in one place in great shape. sorry dont have more info on where it was but i know it was close to wagoner, oklahoma. sure saw alot of american cars but nothing really import wise sitting anywhere along the 75/69 drive.
  25. will have an 83 automatic out of a brat, as soon as maybe next weekend, i am in the dfw area, if you need help, i am sure calebz and i can give you a hand in helping you get that thing in and done. let me know...
