Scoob Noob from Nor Cal
Hondasucks replied to fortysixandtwo's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I'm a die hard soob nut too, and I'm originally from NorCal (Moved to Oregon from Auburn in 95).. Although I'm considering a Yota for a wheelin rig, if I can find a Land Cruiser wagon with a manual trans lol... -
All the EA81 digital dashes I have, that are fried (I have ONE good one), the SAME PART is fried in it, my dad and I looked at the good one, and determined that it's a voltage regulator, but we never tried replacing it.. and the dashes (except the good one) are sitting in a box, in the back seat of my 82 4x4 which is out at my friends farm. (I need to go get it outta there...) And the warning tone, isnt' an overvoltage warning, it beeps if you go over 5500 RPM, and some of them beep if you go over 55 but mine didn't. All my dash showed was a red line under the speedometer, but the trip computer worked fine.

Get the FSM for 84, all the 85+ manuals we have at work, don't have anything in them about the 85-89 hatch or 85-87 Brat. Added bonus, the 84 FSM is one volume.

Don't use 4wd LO(or HI) on pavement!!
Hondasucks replied to Gloyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
lol 4WD on dry pavement with a bad axle can be fun.. Remove axle, beat outer joint until it comes off the shaft (It WILL come off, just takes a BFH), Put stub back in the hub and tighten nut. Put car in 4WD, set ebrake, -
so my wife calls me "LO"
Hondasucks replied to Arctic Immigrant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1) it's not a LoyalE if it's got high/low unless it was retrofitted 2) I've had good luck getting it up to ~25 or so, and then pushing the clutch in and pushing down on the lever (Not too hard, but not too gently eather) You don't want to force it... Could it possibly be the switch? IIRC, the GLs have a switch on the trans and a switch on the four wheel drive lever, one turns on the 4WD light and the other turns on the LO light. (Although mine doesn't have a LO light since it's turbo and was originally a pushbutton tranny) GLoyale - You ever come into John and Phil's? I work there, drive a white SVX... -
The master tech that I work with (has worked on Subarus for 33 years) told me to get one of the newer style knock sensors, that has the connector directly on the sensor itself, along with enough of the harness to tie that into the stock harness. He did it to his 92 and hasn't had any problems with it.

Merry Christmas
Hondasucks replied to michael appel's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yeah, it's awesome :-) Early Christmas present to myself :-P I need to find out where to get the Rudolf "Costume" (I think Connie has one.. Consists of antlers that attach to the windows and a big red nose that attaches to the grille) The big block Dodge is still sittin in the driveway, but it's facing the other direction now. I can't find the key and since the gas tank is downhill it doesn't want to start -
Did you check the timing belt? No worries if it's broken, Toyota belt driven motors are non-interference. I know a guy that might want it... Check the belt.

+1 for snow! I wanna do some SVX drifties -
That's one of the great myths of electric cars. Yes, the electricity used to charge your batteries might be generated in a "dirty" power plant, but remember that coal fired power plant is more efficient that the ~25% or so that an internal combustion engine is. I've been thinking about building an EV myself, but I'm not sure what I'm going to use, that is a very slick adaptor plate there, makes a Subaru seem like a pretty decent platform.. I was thinking about using a Toyota pickup since with a pickup you can put the batteries in or under the bed, and not have to fabricate a sealed, vented enclosure like you do if it's in a passenger car. 10k is pretty good, most of the systems I've looked at are anyhwere from 12k to 20k depending upon what you get (the more efficient motors and controllers are more expensive, even more if you go with an AC system, although the AC systems can have regenerative braking, which extends the range.

Yeah we did, but only for like, 2 years I think, in the early 80s, and not very common. The newer turbodiesel motors are available from Japan, and are a pretty easy swap.

Just an FYI, if you're changing the battery, turn the key ON while you change out the battery, that tells the security system that it is a "legal" battery disconnection and won't activate the security system when you connect the new battery. (You'll still have to reprogram your remote though.) You can also turn the key ON, take off the negative clamp for 10 seconds, plug it back on, turn key off. (This will also reset the blinking parking lights on cars w/out the security module)

I've pretzled a few on my old 84 GL 4x4 it's not all that hard... Good whack to the tire in the right place will do it. -
How did you break your first Subie??
Hondasucks replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I didn't mess up my first Subaru... I was rollin down the main drag and this guy in a Datsun pickup pulled out in front of me, and when I laid on the horn at him, he STOPPED in the middle of the road and I T boned him @ about 25ish... Then he took off so I chased him lol, finally pulled in front of him at a stop sign and waited for the cops.. Guy didn't speak english so the cops had to wait for someone to show up that spoke Spanish (In the meantime, he was trying to tell me in Spanish how it was my fault that he pulled out in front of me..) and get this, they didn't cite him for hit and run beacuse "I was yelling and probably scared him" so he got off with a "failure to yeild the right of way" ticket.. Good part was he had insurance, I got $700 out of the insurance, and got all the parts for $100 from the junkyard Drove it for another year or so until some ********************* ran me off the road (He didnt' have insurance) and from the jump I took the frame got tweaked, so it's washing machines now still have the engine though... -
Subrau Brat Diesel in Washington???
Hondasucks replied to SuperBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know if that'd fit, the Vangon diesel is just a standard inline four cylinder Rabbit diesel motor, more or less laying on its side, I doubt there is enough room in the Subaru engine compartment for it + a trans... Woulda been cool if they had made a boxer diesel... I've heard that Fuji made a diesel EA81 that they used in a forklift, but I've never seen a picture or anything. -

Before you do ANYTHING with either one, Google "mopar fender tag decoder" and enter in the stuff on the fender tag of each one... Make sure neither of them have something special that makes them worth mega $$$... my '68 Polara has a U11 code, which means it was special ordered, so it's possible it's one of a kind, or at least one of very few..... Good news is that you can damn near get every panel for a B body aftermarket, so rust is not a problem. (MY Polara on the other hand, I can hardly get anything for it... so I've had to fabricate parts from scratch) -
It's in mom and dad's driveway, under a car cover... Has a bent control arm and a crunched fender/hood/bumper Here's a pic:

just do the 5 lug conversion -
The parts store people probably are just assuming since OBD-II is 96+ that it won't work, but there are a lot of cars that were OBD-II compliant in 95, including the Scoob. Only thing that might make a difference is if it's US built or Japan built... OBD-II port looks like this: I can't find a picture of the Subaru diagnostic port used on the older cars.. the OBDII port will be attached to the dash under the steering column, but the OBD-I port will just be dangling under the dash, it's square and I THINK it is a bone colored connector.
