  1. I found a southern USA imported sub-frame today locally ..... through a local suby forum member for $450. Thats not bad for a easy pickup part in great condition, I saw a few pics today and it is very mint. I will be recommending to my friend the H6's owner that we go in this dirrection. I will still be taking some comparisons and measuremnet the next time I have a 4th gen in my driveway, its still worth investigating alternative options in my opinion.
  2. Locally they are $795.00 from the dealership ...... Holy spoob! I do have a '00 parts car at my fathers and it has a servicable subframe, not perfect but better then this patched one ...... but like IVANS its buried until springtime. I just know that the yard that has the '07 XT is a small time outfit and doesn't really know what they have, i picked up the momo wheel for $20 & odds are the subframe will be very cheap! The next time my father comes up with his '09 Outback I will jump under it compare the body/lateral link mounts and take some measurements, or maybe go pull some specs off the '07 XT ...... I work as a aircraft mechanic and am pretty good at "mesuring twice and swapping once". I still have faith that Subaru is far to cheap to only use a major componenet on only one generations run of the Legacy! Guess I will be the first really look into this. Ian
  3. Hey guys! A good friend just picked up a '01 H6 outback for cheap locally, it is in great shape overall but has a patched rear sub-frame. I have worked on suby's for years and own a '03 Legacy myself ..... so was aware of the issue on the 00-04 gen's have been planning on picking up a extra rust-free rear sub-frame for my '03 to keep in parts stock anyway. Here is the question. Can I use rear subframe from a '04+ legacy/outback on a 00-04? Subaru has always been a "lego" manufacturer and when I replaced my '95 Legacy rear sub-frame I used a '03 Impreza and it bolted right up. There are zero 00-04 locally to me with solid sub-frames, but there is a '07 XT just up the road that is very low mileage and solid. After looking at a few pics it really looks like the fourth gen sub-frame is the exact same, minus a exhaust hanger loaction which is a easy fix. Anyone know for sure if they bolt up? Anyone try one out yet? Any input or parts info would be appreciated. Cheers, Ian
  4. I parted out an SVX a while back and sold a few bits online on the SVX forums. - headlights - grill - tail lights - trunk (especially if it has no spoiler, they are very populer) - struts from trunk - cluster & HVAC control unit - wiper arms and motors - and a bunch of small interior bits - EG33 swap and the full dash harness and ecu/tcu
  5. It's a subaru AWD requirement. It will create premature wear and can cause major damage to the differentials.
  6. Could I not just freshen up the `03 long block & plug the EGR port. Then run it off the `00 harness, cam & crank sensor sprockets, intake manifold and ecu. It`s basically the reverse of what I am doing to the `03. BTW I have the complete `00 outback on hand. Plus I have a few other subaru engines available (Ej22t, EG33, and a EJ25 DOHC etc.) but I want to run a newer EJ25 sohc in the vanagon. Got hpétq numbers and better fuel economy and reliabilty. I love my EG33 swap but it is a absolute pig on fuel.
  7. I did find the thread on the EGR drill and tap. Looks pretty straight forward, I work as a aircraft maintainence engineer and pretty much just drill holes in aluminum for a living. I might spin up a few drill stops on the lathe to fit the drill bits to manage - control hole depth.
  8. I have a '00 EJ25 (SOHC non-egr) from a BH outback that has been completely rebuilt on hand in the shop. I just picked up a '03 BH legacy (SOHC + egr) with a pretty strong noise in the engine, either piston slap or immanent tensioner failure. I rebuilt the '00 EJ25 planning on swapping it into a VW Vanagaon, this is a long term project that won't be on the road until 2014....... hopefully. So rather then pull the '03 EJ25 and doing a rushed R&R, I would like to just drill and tap the EGR port into the '00 outback engine and swap it into the '03. Then I can rebuild the '03 at my leisure and use it in the van when the time comes. So aside from the EGR stuff is there anything else that needs to be changed over from one long block to the other? I read somewhere to swap the cam and crank gears, not sure why exactly since both are phase2 SOHC 2.5's. Anyway any input or advise would be appreciated.
  9. It is tied into the engine coolant system, the turbo on the ej22t is oil & water cooled. The system needs a fill point higher then all its components, and due to the turbo location a radiator cap won't work. So they designed that tank to do the job, and you are right they usually are cracked.
  10. Thanks for the link. I am going to go with 00-04 Outback struts - 05 Baja turbo springs running some 205 or 215/75r15's.
  11. I actually just posted in that thread at request of the originator, and skipped right passed your BH Legacy. That looks about right to me as a great starting point, plus I have all the parts already. Thanks man.
  12. I had a '95 Legcay with '04 forester struts and springs on it running on 215/70R15 Dunlop Graspics & 1999 Forrester 15" steelies. I only did the strut/spring swap and then used a 1/4" DIY plastic rear spacer to even it out a bit. It was a tank ...... no rubbing and had no camber or odd tire wear issues. I didn't even get it aligned after the swap, just marked my front camber bolts and reidexed everything on the reinstall. It was my DD (120km daily) like this for over a year with no issues.
  13. A few years ago I used to have a '95 legacy lifted on XT forester strut and springs. I now would like to lift my '03 legacy and am wondering what parts i would need off an outback to do so. I have a complete smashed '00 outtback to scavenge parts from. Here is a quick list of what i am thinking... To start: -outback struts and springs -subframe spacers Later on: -aftermarket strut spacers -maybe some king springs Just wondering if anyone has lifted a 00-04 legacy? Also what's the biggest tire i can run with the outback suspension setup? Thanks, Ian
  14. I just went to a local small junk yard and they have a rolled/wrecked '07 Outback XT (Turbo/4eat sport shift) they are parting out. Beside the engine and trans swap are there any other parts that are bolt on upgrades for my '03 Legacy L? Here is a quick list of what I could think of off the top of my head.... - Brakes front and rear (will require big wheels I assume) - Rear sway bar, front is turbo so at least on my old suby's that makes it a no go) - Leather shift knob and steering wheel (blown bag on the wheel) - Seats (fronts are gone unfortunately) Unknown possible swap ideas? - Center Console & 6 disc player? - Carpet? - Dash? - Door Cards? - wiper arms? - ?????? Any ideas or tips on what to snag off this beauty? She is smashed hard, front end is drove into the motor and all the glass is gone. I waiting for them to get back at me with a price for the complete car, but would like a parts list to work with if that falls through.
  15. I happen to have a spare complete EG33 in the garage as well as the one in the rally car running. Since the 81 was originally an aircooled van there is less space then the newer water cooled versions. I plan on reversing the intake manifold/coolant manifold and relocating the alternator. I can mock all this up on the spare EG33 and will test it in the legacy to make sure it runs right before pulling the motor from the rally-x car. I am going to run the KEP adapter plate and build my own engine mount using the original subaru crossmember and some fab work. I am going to run a front mount radiator with dual fans, probably a OEM vanagon setup. And no heater core, at least right away. Today I will start testing the revesed intake setup and mocking up the alternator relocation.
  16. I will be starting a new project in a few days. I am picking up an 1981 aircooled westy and will be swapping a EG33 or a 2000 EJ25 into it. I am fairly knowledgeable of subys and swapping EJ's and EG's into different platforms. I currently have an EG33 swapped 1995 legacy that I run for rally-X. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=122175&highlight=EG33+swapped But the body is toast and I need a new home for that sweet six. I found the van locally and it is great shape, has a blown wasser in it but the rest of the van is solid enough for an east coast canadian van. I plan on buying the bellhousing, but would like to build the rest myself. Anyone have any pics of homemade mounts/brackets/headers for an EJ or EG swap. I should have the van in the yard in the next little bit, pics to follow. Cheers, Ian
  17. Yeah the EG33 really takes up some space in the engine bay. Its bascially the same size as a DOHC EJ25 with an extra set of cylinders on the front maiking it 1/3 larger. I had to modify the front upper and lower rad support and ditch the OEM hood latch to fit the rad and fan.
  18. I am planning on making some type of snorkel, or at least re-installing the OEM snorkus. I only had the the factory air-box into the fender, so when it tore the fender liner it soaked the filter. Changed the oil and cleaned out the intake and it is running like a top. I decided to pull out the rear interior and check out the rear strut towers. They are a mess, the lower seam is rusted through in a few spots and there are a few holes in the tower also. I will be taking it to a local "frame guy" to box in the rear towers and weld in a strut brace tying the two side together.
  19. Had her out for the final rally-x of the season. Its was raining like a bastard. I ended up tearing a fender liner and swamping the air filter on one of the early laps. Had to swap MAFS and limp home. Not the best day,but it was still fun. I am going to reinstall my 04 Forester XT suspension with bigger tires over the summer, she is to low on the STI springs and is taking a beating. Also going to put in a diff-lock switch and a welded rear end. Stay tuned in the fall, she will be back bigger and badder then ever. And this is how the day ended.
  20. I think I will go with the AT2's. Can't beat the price and they seem to be exactly what I am looking for. Thanks.
  21. I think I am going to reinstall my 04 forester XT suspension on my 1995 legacy wagon. Currently I am running 95 wagon GR2's with STI springs and it is to low for rally cross, I am getting sucked down in the rutted out corners. Last time round I used 215/70R15 Dunlop Graspics winter tires. They worked well and only had minimal rubbing at full lock. This time round I would like to run a fairly aggressive tire that I can use for rally cross and playing around off road. What are people running for tires on there lifted Legacys?

  23. I was welding in a patch on the rear quarter and have come to the realization that the rear quarters and wheel tubs on my 95 legacy wagon are completely rotten, I can basically pull it aprat with my hands. The strut towers are still strong but the quarter and inner tub are rusted beyond repair. I only have one more rally-x this season. After that I will be pulling the car off the road until the fall. I have found a shell at a local yard that is in great shape. I plan on chopping of the complete rear quarters and strut towers and drilling off the spot welds once I get it home to see how the inner structure of the car is built up I might just reinforce the strut towers and remove the inner wheel tub completely. Then just use a plastic fender liner to replace the metal rear wheel tubs. Does any one have any experience with changing the rear quarters or the wheel tubs? Any tips or tricks on where to cut and splice the old and new sections? Any advice or info is apreciated.... Cheers, Ian
  24. Thanks for the comments and tips. I also have a '02 CB919 that I sprayed over the winter using JDBB. I used two spray cans over top of a dark dupilcolor primer. It turned out really well, it has a great satin finish. It needs a fair amount of work over the summer to the body. I am going this weekend to cut out a set of rear quarters from another legacy wagon. I am also on the look out for a outback front bumper skin to go with the GT rear skin I have in the shed already. I have a guy lined up to spray it for me once I get all the body straight.
  25. I have owned this old 1995 Legacy L wagon for the past 6 years. It stared out as a base model L, 2.2L 4eat and has over 400,000kms on her now. A few years ago the car was lifted on on 2004 Forester XT suspension, Homemade Teflon rear strut spacers, 215/70R15 Dunlop Graspics, 1999 Forrester 15" steelies. She worked great and handled surprisingly well, but was underpowered. It was about this time I started collecting parts for a rally-x car build. By the fall of 2009 the Legacy had been deregulated to a woods road and snow storm beast, but I really hoped to find a 2dr 5spd GC as a platform for my rally-x car. I had always loved the idea of swapping an EG33 into a non-SVX platform. I had found a local guy with a low mile eg33 sitting in the corner of his garage. We talked about it a few times, but since it came with no ecu or bulkhead harness. I decided to pass on it. The last week of November 2010 I got a surprise phone call, the owner of the eg33 was cleaning out his garage and needed to make space. He offered me the engine for free ..... I counter offered to trade it for a bottle of his favorite booze. The next night I left the house with a 40oz bottle of rum and returned home with an Eg33. I decided to swap the EG33 and all the parts I had been collecting into the Legacy. I purchased a complete 92 SVX LSI with a blown trans from a junkyard, stripped the harness and ecu. Parted out the remaining shell and kept the second complete EG33 as a spare. I basically started this project on the first of December 2010. I have done a WRX-RS harness merge before, so the wiring wasn't really that bad. In total the harness prep and install took about 2 weeks The goal was to have the car completed and ready to compete at a local rally-x on my birthday Mar 13th/2011. The swap was up and running within a month. I daily drove her for a few weeks sorting out the bugs in Jan and Feb. The car pulls like a freight train, and runs smooth with no issues. It builds rev's quick and is surprisingly fast for an old fat wagon. The sound of the H-6 is amazing, the magnaflow is a little to loud for my tastes......but will work for now. - 92 EG33 H-6 swap - 06 STI springs on legacy wagon GR2's (1/2" spacers in the rear) - 98 Legacy GT front sway bar - 92 Turbo Legacy wagon rear sway bar - aluminum sway bar links - 92 Turbo Legacy wagon front brakes - 98 Legacy GT wagon full interior - 06 Impreza rear sub-frame/lateral links - 04 Forester XT Cat Back - Magnaflow 14827 muffler - 0.080" aircraft grade stainless steel skidplate - Hakka 5's on 15" forester steelies - rally mud flaps and reinforced inner fenders - K&N panel filter Here are some action shots from the last rally-x event. Overall the car worked very well, and was dealt minimal damage. If everything comes together over the summer it should be getting a full respray in John Deere Blitz Black and a new set of gravel rally tires. Cheers, Ian
