How to get a key for a soob?
Try some of the dealers and quality Sube shops like Smart Service in Seattle or S-Wing's Stuff in Denver: http://www.s-wingsstuff.com/ , or maybe Askim's near San Francisco: http://www.askimsauto.com/Home.htm. Just my 2 bucks

Tips on passing SMOG? (78 wagon, with issues)
Yup, sounds like fuel starvation..try replacing the fuel filter again. Remember, that car's been sitting a long time and some crud from the tank probably got stirred up enough to get sucked into the fuel system. Never hurts to replace a cheap part. The new plug wires would help, also. I'm guessing your're talking about the "pre-heater hose" that goes from the exhaust to the air cleaner snorkel. Until I found the correct size, I used the closest size that would fit that was a little larger, and hose-clamped it to the snorkel. I kind of "loose fitted" it at the exhaust end. Passed every time. My 2 bucks

Tips on passing SMOG? (78 wagon, with issues)
Your car may not have originally had a cat. During that era, some of the Japanese 49-state versions were without cats, some came with them. Hmmm...come to think of it, I believe that is a California model. My experience was with mostly Toyotas back then..I guess it's possible that California (and high altitude) Subarus came without cats. I like the thicker motor oil idea, that worked for awhile on an Oldsmobile with lots of blowby. (Helped to sell it actually, heh heh) We used 90 weight. In your case, maybe a ridiculously heavy oil (no MMO) could be used temporarily until after the test..then change to normal weight with the MMO.

Napa Valley California, June 27th...
Yup, quite the nice drive. Was especially cool in my bud's new A6 4.2 Quattro, in the late afternoon. His wife drove southbound, I got to drive north:grin: . Not the road to be on in a hurry.

Northern Nevada Mini Meet
Yeah, Doyle sounds good, I'm sure the snow is gone by now. Just checked some of the trails at Tahoe (7000' and above), the gates are open!! Remember, higher elevations mean lower temperatures:) .

Parking Brake Binding
'83 D/R Wagon: Today I discovered the parking brake won't release the right side caliper. I'm thinking something just needs to be lubed, or maybe a spring has collapsed or broken. I've managed to get the brake on that side released so I can drive the car, but if I were to engage the parking brake, it won't release on the right side again. The brakes work fine otherwise. I've looked in the FSM (page 10-4,caliper exploded view), but the diagram isn't that clear or specific for me to be sure. Can this be a simple, "on-car-in-the-garage" repair, or is the whole caliper toast?

Saw a Brat with an EJ engine
Hey Corky, I think we deserve some sort of "appearance fee" for that one, yes:grin:? (I'm standing in front of the car in the hat)

Driveline noise Opinions, please.
'83 Dual range wagon: My rig makes the classic "CV axle going out" noise, under various conditions..that is, accelerating, coasting, straight line, whatever. It's worst when turning after stopping, but sometimes really bad just pulling into my driveway. The axle is a high quality rebuild, and I hear the same sound now as when the old axle was there. Wheel bearings are recent, under 20K ago (although I don't think it's that). My gut tells me, "transmission". I can explain why upon request. This is driving me crazy, I'd also like to have this repaired before leaving for WCSS. Whadya think?

Relocating to Reno Nevada...
If you were interested in a 30 minute commute, Carson City is more affordable. 10 minutes more (east), Dayton is downright cheap. Both are "catching up" to Reno, though. IIRC, Drano does have some "call centers", SBC (aka Nevada Bell), comes to mind. Lots of warehouse and manufacturing too..IGT (huge slot machine manufacturer) is a biggie.

how much does it cost to insure your 80s soobs?
I guess it pays to be an "Old guy", I think mine's like 200 bucks a year.

axle shaft oil seal leak. (arghhh)
Question, is the mess a black grease, or thinner gear oil? Reason for asking is I had a similar mess on the transmission (catalytic converter side of course). Black grease all over, terrible smell. Couldn't figure out where all the oily mess was coming from, tranny wasn't losing a drop. Turned out the CV shaft's seal on the DOJ side was faulty. Replaced the shaft, voila..problem solved:) . Just my 2 bucks

Hey Paul (MOOSENS), are you receiving this?

Northern Nevada Subaru Meet
I wouldn't mind exploring some more of the USFS trails around Tahoe. Last time I checked 3 weeks ago, most were still closed. I imagine most of the snow and wetness is gone by now, should make for some scenic runs. ...And it's so convenient:grin: .

stuck pedal??
I've got the same model as you. I'm sure you've made sure any floormat is not causing this problem, so my first place to look would be the accelerator cable. I've replaced mine, and it helped a lot. They're fairly cheap, about 15-20 bucks at the dealer.

86 GL hatch EA81 Cooling Issue
Yeah, I agree with Ed..it's time for a new radiator. You can probably pick one up for around a hundred bucks if you shop around Vegas (or Phoenix, if you've made it that far). That'd be a good time to replace the hoses, too. Just my 2 bucks

Wipers
Yeah, Rain-x is great. On the other hand, isn't 68 fast enough to be going in the rain?

Kelly Wintermark Tyres
Those locations are quite a distance from us here at the Ranch in 89451..There's a dealer in South Tahoe that's been good to me over the years, I can get Wintermarks there (although the California Tree Hugger taxes and surcharges are encouraging me to buy in Carson or Reno, NV). Thanks for the info, though:) .

Kelly Wintermark Tyres
I've had Wintermarks on my EA81 wagon, 185/70-13 for some time now. I've been very satisfied with their performance on the road, snow (sometimes bumper deep), and wear. They're getting a little thin now, and much noisier than when new. I'd definitely get another set, if I could find them.

Yard Run!! Reno Then Carson City!! (5/15/04)
Yep, both yards were busy, as expected. Plenty-o-Soobs, met some great folks, a good time had by all. Some great bargains out there (especially at Carson City, heh heh). Jibs, if you can't find a vehicle for that "Bumper Guard":brow: , I'll buy it from ya and bring it to WCSS in August. I'd like to visit that stash out in Silver Springs sometime soon, sounds very interesting.

Northern Nevada Subaru Meet
Aren't those kinda heavy, like heavier than a whole Subaru?

Yard Run!! Reno Then Carson City!! (5/15/04)
OK you guys, so I guess we're meeting at Alamo (west lot) at 11? Meet there first, then tackle the crowd at PnP. I'll be in a Cosmic Blue EA81 wagon. Ski rack, wagon wheels, brush guard, multicolored hood. I'll probably be wearing a cowboy hat.

custom ea81/82 Motor mounts, any interest?
Yeah, I'd be interested in a set of EA81 tranny mounts, 4 speed dual range, thanks.

Yard Run!! Reno Then Carson City!! (5/15/04)
Alamo is hard to miss, it can be seen from I-80 as far away as Ascuaga's Nugget:D .
