  1. I picked up a Pretty Sweet 2002 L.L. Bean edition OBW for $1600. It needed some work, and I have her running (and Stopping!) pretty well now. But when I stop after a drive you can smell Coolant. It doesn't leak much, and I can't really tell where it's coming from. But with 265K Miles on her, my 1st thought is the water pump. I add about a Quart of Coolant every 300 miles / Tank of Fuel. Any other ideas besides Water Pump? Assuming it is the WP, has anyone changed one on an H6 before? Any tips, tricks, advice?
  2. Hey there swinging Subaru-ers, I just picked up a 2002 Outback L.L. Bean Edition for $1800. It needed This-n-That, and I've taken care of most of it. And as the title suggests, there was no shade in the rear sunroof, just the sunroof itself. I have found a Totaled car with the shade for $50. But I have to remove it, and then install it. Anyone ever have the Pleasure, or at least a Clue? I'll be hitting YouTube and a Shop Manual if I can get my hands on one...
  3. Okay, so to summarize, what is the BEST Timing Belt kit to get? Or Mixture? I'm doing mine next month, and plan on going "All IN", including water pump, thermostat, etc...
  4. Well, added new plug wires, and no difference... I'm moving to Indiana this sunday. Car drives fine on the freeway, but MPG has dipped from 25 to 22. I'll pick this up down there. Thanks for the suggestions! Tony
  5. Okay, this is almost funny. I went to the SUbaru dealership across the street from where I work, and it's one of those complex's where they sell EVERYTHING! I mean there are Maserati's & Lamborghini's in the mix here. So I get to Service, and ask for Parts, and they send me to the Saturn dealership. So I get to the Saturn dealership, and ask for Parts, and they send me over the river & through the woods. I get to parts, and tell them what I need for a '96 Subaru, and they look at me weird, and tell me Subaru parts are at the other end of the building...Anyways, I get to parts, and they had NOTHING that I needed. But they will have the OEM wires in tomorrow, so I ordered them, and left. I picked up the new New fuel filter, NGK plugs, and even grabbed some new wipers. So I replaced the fuel filter, and it actually runs a bit smoother, but still a little miss at low RPM's. So I start changing the plugs, and all is going well until I pull the wire of the last plug. It came off WAY too easy. I look, and the metal end is still on the plug. SOB!!! So I get it off, replace the plug, JAM the metal end back in, and start the car. It sill shoots a decent spark out the end of the wire, but I'm guessing that is the source of my misfire. The car runs a little better, so I'm guessing the fuel filter had accumulated a bit more "Tank Tartar" build up, and the # 4 plug wire is shot. We'll see tomorrow when I put the new set on. Oh, and the Wipers are MUCH BETTER Too!
  6. Okay! Thanks for all the posts. I've been busy trying to $ell my house, as I move to Indiana Labor Day weekend. I have run a tank of gas since the Techron treatment, and it seemed to be getting worse. So I'm running another (20 Gallon Size!) bottle through my 16 Gallon tank. Tonight I will replace the the Fuel Filter (again), then replace the wires, then the plugs, checking for an improvement between items. I had taken the fuel filter off, and blew through it. It seemed to have minimal resistance, so Im guessing it's okay, but after the 2nd can of Techron I'm taking no chances. (And it seems to be running better with the Techron in the fuel...) Timing belts where changed at 120K, and I'm at 146K now. So after the Big Move I'll change them. It's almost time anyways. I'll update tomorrow...
  7. Hmmm...No change. Any suggestions before I take it to "The Shop" Tony
  8. Okay! I use BP mid-grade gas, and I used Gum Out injector cleaner. I ran 300 miles, and still about the same. I'll get a new fuel filter, and add a bottle of Techron and see what shakes loose! Thanks! Tony
  9. I have a 1996 Outback with the Coveted EJ22/5-Spd drive train. I recently acquired a slight misfire at idle. This seems to smooth out at about 3000 RPM, but still is lacking in power. Doesn't run TERRIBLE, just a slight mis, and missing a little power on the freeway. My first thought was Crap Gas. So I filled up, and added a bottle of Injector cleaner. After 300 miles, it's still about the same. I have not seen a Check Engine Light. I have pulled the plugs, and they looked okay, gapped at .035, light ash, etc...I cleaned them & put 'em all back in. Plug wires look fine, good contact being made, coil looks okay... I'm leaning towards dirty injectors, and I'm going to pull & clean them this weekend. Any thoughts/comments/advice? Thanks! Tony
  10. So does anyone know if a 1996 Legacy RF door will fit on a 1995 Legacy/Outback. Remember, the So-Called Outback in 1995 did not have the raised roof, so it's a Standard Legacy body... I have a line on a Good door for $50. Mine is Quite Rusty. Thanks, Tony
  11. 1995 Legacy Outback 2.2, Auto, 145k, Mixed City/Hiway, Like a Bat Outta Hell! Best so far 24mpg, typically 21 - 22mpg:headbang:
  12. Heh! We have a NEW problem like this every year. This year it's a Ballsy Coyote (Borrowed my Son's Pitbull!), last year it was raccoons in the garage attic. Year before it was RATS making a nest under my wifes engine compartment! She comes home at about 9pm from school. The rats would get dog food (From our own dog!) and pieces of things he had torn up, and made a nice Rats Nest under the hood of her Taurus. Lots of Nooks & Crannies for heating the dog food. I think they would crawl under there after she parked, cuz it was nice & warm! Well, she had to go back out 20 minutes after getting home one evening. As she started the car she heard a couple of Thumps! under the hood. She backed out of the garage, and shut the engine off. She saw 3 or 4 Rats scurrying away, and there were 2 cut in 1/2, and a third dis-embowled. She FREAKED!!! (I let the dog out, and he cleaned up the mess...) Anyways, Peppermint Oil is the answer. All rodents are allergic to Peppermint. We went to the local Health Food store, and the Hippies there sold us a BIG Bottle. We poured a bit onto a bunch of cotton balls, and put them under the hood (After removing about 3 lb.s of food!), and anywhere a Rat could Weasel his way into the garage. That ended that problem. Now every year as it gets colder, we put out the Peppermint. Seems to do the trick! (It was more fun Shooting the Raccoons though...) MADD1
  13. Interesting...I was considering putting the Fuse in during the Non-Winter months, and hoping to enjoy better MPG. Has anyone done this, or Is this recommended as something NOT to do?
  14. +1 on the Blizzaks! I got a set of aluminum rims for the winter tires, and I look good while Keeping a Grip on the situation! Nothing like LEAVING a herd of Trucks, Jeeps, and SUV's at a light with Ice/Snow on the ground! Fat Tony
  15. Thanks for all the responses! I'll Tinker with this problem this weekend. After I put my SNOW TIRES ON! It's starting to come down here in The Motor City... (Just a little...) Tont
  16. Hey No LIGHTS!!! I just realized that I have no Lights behind my Heater/AC & my Shift Lever. Fuses look good under hood & dash. Any ideas? I DO need to replace the Flasher Module. I doubt it's related, but who knows... Thanks Fat Tony
  17. Rain, Rust, The Roads, like EVERYTHING else in Detroit, is just a Little Bit MEANER! MADD1
  18. Yes! I have the original AM/FM/Cassette out of my '95 Outback. If ANYONE is interested in it, $10 for shipping, and it's yours! I burned all my cassettes to CD, and $old them on EvilBay... Fat Tony
  19. Or for $75 go to Mickey Shorr-Type Audio-Mart, and get a decent upgrade... Fat Tony
  20. Then I'll use my last 3 vacation days and go to Minnesota! Fat Tony
  21. New Radio installed! It even let's me plug in my USB jump-drive with MP3's. Not to mention Home-Made CD's, with MP3s, HD & Sattelite ready, etc...$200@Micky Shorr's, Money-Bags! Also added a good Radar/Laser detector. It has a weather & emergency vehicle warning channel. If an emergency vehicle is within range, a Bright S is displayed, and it makes an English siren sound. I guess if I was CRANKING MegaDeth at 96+ dB's, it might help to know a Fire Truck was cruising at Mach .2 nearby. $75, including Hardwiring it in! To top it all off, I have my Winter Tires ready! I picked up a set of 15" Alloys from a fellow USMBer (Thanks Bryce!), and then putted off to Flint where I scored a set of NEVER Installed 195/60/15 Blizzaks for a cool $100. After installation I'm in for $208. I hope we get POUNDED This winter! Damn! It's time to change the oil/Tranny fluid again! And rotate tires...I have 5K miles on this Soobie already! Fat Tony
  22. It took me 20. 5 to find it, and get it off(I cleaned the mating surfaces as well.), 10 to go get the new one, and 5 to put it back on, which included drinking a Beer, and clearing the code! Tools included 2 6" 3/8 extensions, socket, and rachet...Injuries were a scraped knuckle, and few WARM moments putting the bolt back in. Shoulda drank the beer while the engine cooled... Fat Tony
  23. Home! What a trip! Drove 549 miles straight down to what looked like a scene to a sequel of Deliverence. Deep South, very Country, and Hot & Sticky. Took just over 8 hours, but with the time change, barely 7 hours! Before the road trip I had a Kick-@$$ stereo & radar detector installed. Needed them anyways. I traveled with my drummer, Serious Defect. Between him and I, and my gear, lets see what the weight was in the car. Me - 220 Him - 325(+) Amp - 125 etc - 125 ----------- 795 lbs Okay, car was LOADED! Ran without air on the way down there, and averaged 26 MPG@85 MPH. When we got there I shut off the car, and the ABS HCU was making a terrible noise, like it was a compressor trying to fill its tank. I pulled both fuses marked ABS under the dash, but it kept running. SD unhooked a connector, and it shut off. We hooked it back up, and all was well. I know the ABS works, cuz I almost rear-ended a Hum-Vee that had stopped going down a hill on a dirt road. Soobie didn't want to want to come to a complete stop, thought she was sliding I suppose... Where we went is a BIG FIELD outside of Nashville. They throw a HUGE party the last Saturday of the month for 9 of the 12 months out of the year. It is 8' - 10' high weeds with a LARGE area carved out for the stage & bar, and several Camping Areas carved out for guests. It is a Private party, opened bar, security is TIGHT, and run by "Mike", a UFC trainer who specializes in Gracie Jiu Jitsui & the Militech Fighting System. He is also the "Sound Guy". Super cool, and not an ego maniac. (It was his Hum-Vee I almost bumped) Anyways, the party ROCKED! It starts off with a Sing-A-Long, and "The Punch of the Month". This months song was done to the tune of Bob Segar's Turn the Page, but it was about a pervert picking up under-age kids on the internet called "She's Underage". I guess this was a Shot at one of the locals, who was dating someone a bit younger than she had claimed to be. http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/bobseger1.shtml The Punch was Blue, and Very Strong. It was called Windex...After the sing-a-long and Punch chugging, the bar opened, and the 1st band setup. they played from 9 - 10, and the bon-fire started somewhere in between. We went on after that, and we were plagued with a Drunk singer, technical difficulties, and a generator that wasn't quite up to our electrical demands! Oh well, driving 500+ miles to play a Less Than Stellar show isn't the end of the world! We wraped it up, I ordered 2 Corona's, 2 shots of Quervo, and chased my evening dose of Tylenol #3 down! There was a Mosh-Pit MP3 track running until 3am, at which time the party winds down to the camp-site level. I crawled into my tent, plopped on the air mattres, and listened to several people Dry-Heaving next camp over. I dozed off around 4...And was UP at 6:30am!!! Internal clock and all that...But I was okay. Not drunk, hung over, and not "Hurting" in general. I re-kindled the Bon-Fire in the main pit, and soon several others wandered over, and we sat and looked at the fire, and shared stories about the night before. It seems they liked the bands, although they weren't sure what the 2nd band (mine) was trying to do, it was at least loud & fast! They didn't know I was in the band So semi-good reviews from a subjective critic. Made the trip seem somewhat worthwhile! At 7:30 SD & I broke camp, and were on the road at 8. First order of business, BREAKFAST!!! Just as we crossed the Tenn - KY border we found a Denny's full of Good Ol' Boys. I (unintentionally) parked so they could see the license plate, and I heard several comments about a "God D@#%ed Michigan Car". Okay! Eat, Pay, DRIVE FAST!!! Maybe I shoulda pointed out I'm from SOUTHERN California. Or not... Drive home was WITH AC blazing, mostly to keep the stench of SD down. MPG dropped to 23, and I noticed that the car was dropping down to 3rd on the hills alot with the Cruise Control set at 80. No biggie. Got home in just over 8 hours, but with the time change, over 9!! Total cost of gas was $121.50, average MPG righ around 25. No tickets, no close calls, The ABS incident was the closest thing to an equipment failure, and surprisingly enough No Hang Over!!! Musta been the Tylenol #3. I declare Soobies 1st road trip of 1100 miles a qualified success! Fat Tony - World Traveler
  24. I was born an d raised in San Diego CA. (Avg Temp year round = 72 Deg F) Relatively speaking, it is Arctic-Like here 4 - 5 months easily! Fat Tony
