She's got almost 150K. Hardly broken in! Just a hint of rust in the usual places. Sounds like a Good Idea! I won't be abusing the BanditWagon much, but these long, straight, Flat, boring michigan roads are ROUGHER than a lot of off-road I've seen out west. Stock tire size is 195-60-15. Anyone ever go to 205, or even 225-60'd? Might soften the Crater-Effect on 8-Mile rd....

Yes, everything I've read says that the 95 & 96 Outbacks are the ones to go with because of the non-interferance head. I don't really like the Mini-SUV look, so I went 95 over 96. It is an Auto, and it drives like a dream! No torque-binding noticed. At least not like my Loyale had in 4WD on dry pavement! That was PAINFUL!!! Looking forward to posting about my new adventures, even if they should include a head gasket... Thanks for the Warm Welcome, Fat Tony

I'm making the jump from the Older Soobie forum to the New Generation Soobie forum. I'm picking up my '95 Outback next week. It's in great shape, especially for this part of the Rust-Belt, and at the moment needs a Knock Sensor, and a rear-wiper arm, and I'm gonna throw new rubber all the way around. Tires are okay, all the same size. but there are 3 brands. The previous owner doesn't recall when the timing belts were last changed, but recalls that they were. So I'm going to assume EVERYTHING needs to be done, and do a FULL Maintenance on it first thing. Anyone that has any insight to easy Mods, or Tips/Tricks/Etc... I'd be glad to hear them! I'll post pics next week. Looking forward to the 5 lug wheels!!! Tony

Well, I'm getting back into the Subaru game with a 1990 AWD Legacy LS Wagon. 190K miles, 5-Spd, EVERYTHING works, Minimal rust, and had a clutch replacement 20K miles ago. $800. Intereior is Gray, and Decent! I'll miss the 4-By-on-the-fly of my Loyale, but look forward to 130 HP, aftermarket wheels, and available parts! Any other Dee-Troy-Ters out here? Fat Tony

Woo Hoo! I went by my former place of employment, TRW Automotive's World Headquarters, in Livonia, MI. It is on a single road that has a 1/2 mile Loop in it, that 2nds as a Test Track. At the far end of the loop is a dirt road that goes about 300 yards back, and then has a hairpin turn, drops about 10 - 15 feet, and comes back out. The last leg is pretty rough. Well, it was raining, and I decided to check this trail out. A friend of mine took me through it in his Jeep Wrangler a few years earlier in the DRY. I pushed the 4WD button, and away we went. As I got to the hair pin turn I could see tire tracks below, and LOTS of mud, and a pretty deep rut. I figured somebody had been back here recently, so What the Hell? I went around the turn, and into the soft mud, and laid into the throttle! I started drifting to the outside of the turn, which features about a 6 foot drop! I stopped, SLAMMED it into reverse, got the front of the car back on the trail, and slammed it back into first! Started drifting to the outside, but went for it anyways! I rode the ridge, got traction, and pulled out onto the center of the trail. I had pretty good speed up, and had to BANZAI a small tree, maybe 8" diameter, and for the most part, make my own trail out. Once I got back on the pavement I saw a Cherokee & a Liberty sitting there talking. I drove over to them, thinking I might recognize them. (Nope) They looked at my Muddy BanditWagon, and asked if I had just made that run? I said SURE! I'm going around again! The guy in the Cherokee laughed, and told me he had just pulled the guy in the Liberty out, and he almost got stuck in the process. They asked what I was driving. I just shook my head, and drove back around to do it again! I took the trail about 5 times before it started to get boring. I even tried it in 2WD once, but started to bog down, so I popped it back into 4WD, and pulled out. I'm Hooked!!! I need More Mud!!! Fat Tony - AKA - Madd Anthony I am the MADDest of ALL Anthony's:

The '82 is running SUPER low oil pressure!
Anthenium replied to burtonsnowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is normal. I asked the same question when I first joined this board. If you find your owners manual, like someone suggested to me, it will show you a picture of your gauge at idle, which is barely off of Zero on the gauge, and the gauge while at normal operation, which should be around 45. It's towards the back of the manual...Just keep changing your oil, and you'll be fine:-\ ... After I read the manual for my '91 Loyale, I learned a LOT of quirky things that are "NORMAL" for these wonderful cars. Bottom line, RTFM!!! FAT Tony - -
Anyone tried an EG33 (SVX Motor) in a Corvair? I'm REALLY considering such a conversion, and wonder if anyone needs to talk me out of it... Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com

Hey, anyone have any experience repairing a leaking gas tank with a coating or liner product? My 91 Loyale looks like it;s leaking along the seam of the tank in the rear. I was refered to a product by Eastwood Automotive that cleans the tank out, the coats it, making it leak-proof. I have ordered their Gas Tank Sealer Kit: http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=382&itemType=PRODUCT I'll dig the tank out this weekend, and let Y'all know how it turns out. Fat Tony

Feels like axles are binding in 4WD
Anthenium replied to Anthenium's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the input. What part of Australia are you in? I had the Pleasure of visiting Albany, Australia, back in 1985. I was with the US Navy at the time. We were supposed to go to Perth, but they needed a ship to go further south, and we were chosen. I loved it! We went chasing Roo's in a Land Rover! (Okay, we shot at a few:grin: ) I remember Swan Lager as well... Cheers! Fat Tony -
Feels like axles are binding in 4WD
Anthenium replied to Anthenium's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay, I feel a little better. It does this in Dry or wet. Wasn't sure if it was "Normal". (Like this car is Normal!!!) I only put the 4WD on when it's raining hard, or snowing. Or when I venture off-road. (on purpose!) Then usually turn it off once it's up to speed. I'll go through the owners manual again. Yeah, these are the ULTIMATE Bass Rig Haulers! The "Bandit-Wagon" holds a FULL stack, 2 basses, my Bog-0-Tricks, and either a Groupie or a Roadie. Thanks for the responses, Fat Tony - -
Okay, I have a '91 Loyale wagon, 5Spd, 4WD. When I'm in 2WD there is no problem. But when I'm in 4WD I notice that when I am going slow, and turn the wheels into a turn, it feels like the brakes are being applied, or the axles don't want to turn. If I'm rolling backwards, turning the steering wheel about 1/2 a turn, or more, is just like steping on the brakes. Once the front wheels are straight again, it rolls fine. Any ideas? I'm about to do a MAJOR maintenance on this beast for the winter. Anything in particular I should look at for this problem? Thanks, Fat Tony -

Who needs a truck when you have a wagon?
Anthenium replied to msteel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I typically load the "BanditWagon" with: 1 SWR 4004 Bass Amp 1 SWR Big Bertha 1 x 18" SubWoofer 1 SWR WorkingMans 4 x 10" Bass Cabinet 2 Big Badd Basses from my Collection 1 "Bag-of-Tricks" Wires, cables, extension cords, etc... 1 3-Way Guitar Stand and my choice either 1 Roadie, or 1 Groupie. There's still room for a medium sized dog, or a BlowUp Doll. Not a HEAVY load, but it takes up a lotta space!!! Caio, Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com -
I find this to be Hilarious! I have a SNOOTY neighbor who drives nothing But Volvo's. His family has 4 or 5. He SNEARS at my Lowly Loyale everytime he see's me in it. (Funny, but he just looks away when I'm in my Maserati ) I'll have to find out what his e-mail address is somehow, and forward this link to him. Fat Tony - Lowly Loyale Lover

More rear disc swap questions
Anthenium replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I converted my EA82 to rear disk using this document: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49975 It says nothing about a proportioning valve for either. Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com -
Well, the Auction Petered out at $1,025.00, Reserve Not Met. Hopefully the guy ACCEPTED the highest bid, and got this "Prize" out of his garage. I paid $1500 for my Loyale, and think it was a bit much. If I had paid 4 X that amount, I HOPE someone here would come beat the $#!+ out of me, tie me up, and push me and the Soobie into Lake Erie, to settle next to Jimie Hoffa. Blame Canada!!! Yeah, I bought my '91 Loyale as a Winter Beater. It's turned into my Daily Driver! And if I ever get bored, I have something to Tinker with. There's ALWAYS something that wants/needs attention on these cars. And being so easy to work on, it really builds your confidence up quickly. Newbie with a '93 Loyale
Anthenium replied to Special Fred's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Very nice! I picked up a '91 wagon about 3 or 4 months ago. Other than getting it running good, I have done the rear wheel Disk Brake conversion. This makes a HUGE difference in stopping, and driving confidence. I think you will need to get your brakes from a Non-Station Wagon, and I think it has to match the target cars drive. 2WD, or 4WD. I got mine from Baccaruda for a Buck-20 delivered. Welcome to the board. It does ROCK!!! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com -
Signs You Need A Bigger Exhaust System
Anthenium replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Being a former Honda tuner, and a Fan of the Sleeper, I have made a few Hot Hatches in my day. The Biggest Bang for the Buck comes from an after market Intake, a Header, and a Cat Back exhaust. These little engines need to Breath! Just adding a muffler isn't going to do much. And adding a LOUD muffler is quite annoying! But since there isn't much in the way of Intakes & Headers for the EA8X Soobies, a less restrictive exhaust is about all there is to try... -
Just a guess, but Back in the Day (Early '60's) Gear Heads would get LONGER Plugs, and remove the washer as well, to increase compression. Since it is displacing some of the air, it is essentially making the combustion chamber smaller, raising compression. This is part of the Royal Bobcat package put on Pontiac's from Ace Wilsons Pontiac dealership in Royal Oak Michigan. But with todays engines, I doubt you're going to get any noticable gains from this "Trick". If it's for another reason, thanks for letting me Bable on about Detroit History/Trivia, one of my passions! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com

Water injection..experiences and opinions please
Anthenium replied to Matty B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My guess is that will be Waaaaaay too much water. I had run Water Injection in place of an air2air intercooler on several 2.2 turbo'ed chryslers. I had installed a kit, that cost about $75 in 1990's $$$'s. It had a pump built into the bottle, and it held 40 oz's of water, or alcohol/water. The nozzle went in after the turbo, and made a HUGE difference. We were routinely taking our boost to 20 Lbs, and showing local Mustangs & Camaro's our Backside! I think you'd be wise to go with a kit, evaluate how it works, and then work on improving certain aspects of the design to fit your needs. Starting out building your own sounds like re-inventing the wheel. Best of luck! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com -
Actually, it does seem to be running pretty good, especially if I don't just FLoor it. At about 1/2 throtle it pulls steady up to about 4500, where I usually shift. If I floor it, there's a couple of flat spots, but it still runs pretty good. And you were right. I got Vito's carcus outta the back. MPG's are Waay up! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com

Okay, I adjusted my timing today. ( '91 Loyale 5-Spd, 4WD Wagon) I had already changed the plugs, wires, cap & rotor. It ran okay, but MPG is about 28, so I thought I'd take a look at it. It was at 10 Degree's BTDC, and the book calls for 20. I set it to 20, and it is smoother, but almost powerless until about 3K RPM. I found the pair of green (connections) wires in the cowling, and connected those before adjusting. I'm going to see what my MPG does before adjusting it again. (I'm also going to check that I disconnected them after I finished!) Does anyone else adjust theirs to an "Alternate" setting with better results? Any other Tuning tips? Thanks Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
