  1. I just did my '91 Loyale with Bosch. Platinum plugs($2 each), Rotor, Cap, and 7MM wires. I set the gap at .42, which is the hi-end for my car(.35 - .42) Runs Much Better! Revs right up to 6K, where it kinda Petered out around 5K before. Be careful taking the screws outta the Rotor Cap! Snapped the heads off, and had 2 studs! (Drilled 'em through, Nut/Bolt holds cap down now...) Hope this helps a little, Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  2. Hey L-2.7! Sure. I'll post some. Have you looked at the link at how to do this? Good pictures there, along with Step-byStep instructions. I figured your Loyale would have triple Disks! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  3. Okay, I have a '91 Loayale wagon. It came with the completely lame rear drums. The car stopped, but the brakes feel spongy, and doesn't really feel like Good Brakes should. But, I found a set of disks for $120 on this Fine Site! (Thanks Baccaruda!) So I set aside a day to do this, printed out the procedure, again posted on this FINE site, ( http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49975 ) and went to work! First problem, well, at first there weren't any. The 1st side came of perfectly. Even the brakeline wsa a breeze! Put the disk on. Done! (I did actually not tighten the line, but I caught that before bleeding!) On the the next side. I couldn't get the brake line off! It stripped. I tried every Nut Loosener and still couldn't get it to budge with Vise-Grips. So, I tried the line going into the backing plate. He Scores! Came right off. So, I had an extra 6" of brake line. Everything goes on, and it's time to bleed the lines. I had both back tires off, and the rear up on jackstands, just to make it easier. These cars have a wierd bleading patern. D-Front, P-Rear, P-Fron, D-Rear. I guess the resivoir runs back to a block or manifold, the the distribution point is just in front of the D-Rear tire. Whatever. I get my GirlFriend to Pump 'em up, and Gooosh! Bleeding great! She starts pumping them up again, and she says "It's not pumping up!" I look in the resivoir, and it's empty! I fill it, and she pumps, sucks it dry. I look at the ground, and brake fluid everywhere! I had a line so rusty that it ruptured. I have to believe that, since I did not disturbed this line in any way, that it was about to go, and probably would've the next time I drove this car. Kinda scary, considering all the kids that play in the street where I live. SO, now I've got the car at a brake shop, having all the lines checked, and replacing the crust/rusty ones. But the brakes should be good after that! The procedure posted is AWESOME! It took me about 2 - 3 hours from start to, well, Rupture! I'll post more when I get the BanditWagon back. 4. Thanks for all the input. On this base I almost expected the older car to be attacked, but instead I recieved some good points given to them. I think I will stick with the BanditWagon. I do like the unique-ness of it, the 32 MPG, and the 4WD on demand. It is pretty easy to work on, as long as I take into consideration how old and corroded some areas might be. I will however keep my eyes opened for a 95 - 96 Legacy wagon. If I find the right car at the right price, I'll get it. Otherwise I'll keep driving what I have until the wheels fall off! And get a decent stereo system! Thanks again, Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com

  6. Hi, I'm the PROUD owner of a '91 Loyale 5spd, 4WD wagon. It is fun and easy to work on, gets good gas milage, so-so performance/handling, and has TONS of features for an older/inexpensive car. But I think I might want more! Has anyone else here made the jump from the EA8X cars to the Legacy? I think I would be much happier in a similar Legacy. Or even one with an automatic. If I make the jump, I'd like to do it before I sink too much money into the BanditWagon. I've already tuned it, and will be adding rear disk brakes this weekend. That's >$200 right there. I want a stereo, and rims, and, well, you know how things start adding up. Your thoughts either way? Thanks Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com

  8. Good news, bad news. Good news, it's fixed. Bad news, no pictures of the mess. My Chiropractor is a Car Nut. I was talking to him after my adjustment, and he said, "C'mon, I need a break!". We went to his garage, 2 miles away, and in 15 minutes it was fixed! He pulled off the Spare tire support, pulled off the distributor cap, broke of the studs, used the distributor cap as a guide, drilled 2 holes, and tightened it down with a #6 nut & bolt through each hole. Leave it to a V8 guy... Then he LET me help him adjust his Tri-Power on his '65 GTO. That test drive was a little more Dramatic than in the Soobie. Thanks to everyone for the advice and corrections, Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  9. Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll need to pull the distributor to get this out. I have tried channel locks, vice grips. I thought about heating it, but it is buried in the sea of rubber hoses, spark plug wires, and AC tubing. I'll get some photos posted. I'll want to laugh at this someday. 10. Here is the link to the EA Performance Page: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/ea-performance-page/subaru-ea-performance.html Here is the section rec'ding the 2WD distributor: Ignition System The ignition system on the EA series engine is a good design, however as with all ''good designs'' it too can stand a few enhancements. If you have a 4WD car l recommend getting a distributor from a 2WD car. The 2WD distributor has a different advance curve and provides full advance ''sooner'' than the 4WD version. The difference means better low-end torque. Also bypass the vacuum valve between the distributor and curb. This will assure that the vacuum advance on the distributor always gets a vacuum signal from the carb when you press the accelerator. The tweeks all seem to make sense, and my BanditWagon is running better following this system. Fat Tony
  11. I was going through the EA Performance pages, and was working through the ignition system. Everything was going good, found the parts at the store okay, and had a gorgeous day to work on the car. Replaced the Plugs, replaced the wires, and had squirted the screws holding down the distributor cap with Nut Buster, letting it soak in, and get things loosened up. Well, when I went to take the cap off, the screws where in tight, so I squirted them down again, changed the oil, and then went back to try those stuborn screws again. I turned with Moderate force, and felt the first on turn grudgingly, then smoothly! Went to the second one, same thing! Great! Then PING! The head came off of the first screw. And Ping! Same for the second. I have 2 Studs sticking out of my distributor! I tried to get them to turn out with Vise Grips, but I could see the stud starting to twist, and knew it was NOT going to turn the threads, just break off again. So! At the moment I have an elaborate array of Tie Wraps holding the distributor down. 3 points to be exact. And it runs Great! I still need to replace the rotor, as it is bit pitted, and had that White Crusty stuff on it, but it runs much better. but... Any thoughts on what to do with the Studs/Broken screws sticking out of my distributor? My thoughts are: A) Get a 2WD distributor, as recomended in the EA Performance pages.(Anybody got one?) Drill out and helicoil. (Do they come that small?) C) Try to Work these broken screws out, and hope for a miracle!(Please pray for me!) D) Hope one of you Wonderful people have a better idea! (Or a 2WD distributor that will work in my '91 4WD Loyale for sale!) Tie-Wraps seem to be working okay. I have almost 100 miles on the tie-wraps, and they are working fine. I'll post a pic so that you can all marvel at my ingeniuity/incompatence. So, comments, suggestions, ridicule? Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  12. Here's mine! haven't figured out how to post a Picture in a msg, so here's link from this board... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10758&cat=500&ppuser=18372"].http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10758&cat=500&ppuser=18372[/url] It's kinda cheezy, but really works good! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  13. Thanks! I was told to check inside the drivers door, and then there's a relay under the drivers seat. I'll be looking into that this weekend. I have bled the brakes, and it helped a little. The bleeders were easy to turn, so I'm guessing the previous owner had done this recently as well. Pads & Rotors? Not a problem! Are the rear drums a pain to do? I'll look 'em over anyways. Also the Electric Door Locks dont work either. Mirrors didn't either, but that was a fuse. I was working on getting the cigar lighter to work, and it's on the same fuse. Oh! I just found the Lumbar Support in the drivers seat too. These cars are Truly amazing for their age/cost. But the SUN is shining on the Motor City today. I've got the top off of the Chrysler TC/Maserati, and giving the BanditWagon the day off. Thanks for your suggestions, Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  14. Forget the color, where did you get the Ground Effects? I wanted to do something like that in the front with heavy rubber, so it doesn't break, but still has an Air-Dam effect. I hate the way the Loyale Slopes back under the front bumper. Sharp wagon. Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  15. I got a set from the Dollar store that hang on the doors...
  16. I'd be interested in an ea82 3" or 4" lift. I have a 1991 Loyale, will the ea82 kit work on this Year:confused: Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  17. I've recently bought a '91 Loyale, site unseen. It was listed on eBay 3 or more times, so I made him an offer, and I got the car for $1500. He was the original owner, and had everything ever done to this car documented. Even stuff he did himself. I guess that made me feel a little more confident. The BAD points were the rust was a little worse than he had told me. Not a big deal, and it is still structurally sound. Also the electric windows quite working 2 days before I picked up the car. The drivers works fine, so acceptable for now. And lastly, the brakes are a bit Spongy! They don't go to the floor, but it's not a SOLID feeling when you hit them hard! They do the job, but... I guess the point of all of this is I wish I had done a little more research, and DEFINITELY a test drive. But these cars are pretty reliable, and super easy to work on. Even easier than a Honda Civic!!! I'm hooked Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  18. The Best thing I have ever found for freeing rusty nuts, parts is sold on a Maserati web page. I used to have a pair of old BiTurbo's, and I used this to get the brakes, exhaust, and turbo fasteners to come off. It REALLY works good! Kinda pricey, but anything Italian that ends in an "i" usually is. http://maseratinet.com/SPARE_PARTS/perfenhance_Biturbo.asp Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  19. Okay, could someone explain the difference between 4WD & AWD? Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  20. Okay, I'm a Noob in a Soob. I'm driving my '91 Loyale(Very Cool!), and I come to a stop light. I notice the oil pressure gauge drops to almost 0. Just up a little bit. As soon as I take off, it's back up to the middle, I think it's 45. Is this normal? My car only has 159K on it, so it's barely broken in. Any thoughts? Suggestions?? Thanks, Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  21. I just picked up my 1st Subaru this weekend, and treated myself to a 300+ mile drive home in it. It's a '91 Loyale wagon, 4WD, 5 Spd. I got it from the original owner, who bought a '96 Legacy, and didn't want to Junk his baby. It's REALLY nice, especially inside, and under the hood. Anyways, I seemed aprehensive to Rev it at first, as it sounded so much like an old VW Beetle, which is not known for Hi Revving. But it did seem natural to shift between 4000 and 5000 RPM. Once on the freway, we traveled at a steady 80 MPH, which was around 3500 RPM. I got a surprising 32.8 MPG on the trip, and am in love with this car already! I am a former Honda Hatchback tuner, and LOVE taking cars to the 8K - 9K range when shifting. (There's nothing like being strapped into a 300HP Angry BumbleBee, pulling away from Mustangs, and still getting almost 30MPG.) But I think once I replace the stock muffler with a Turbo muffler, it will sound less like a VeeDub, and I won't mind visiting 6000 RPM once in a while. Anyone ever NOS one of these EA82's? Du You Subaru? Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  22. Wow! I just got my Bandit Wagon home,('91 Loyale 4WD 5spd) and Viola'! The drivers window works kinda slow, and the other 3 do not work at all! So, instead of posting an annoying question that has been asked 10 times already, I did a search. I found this thread! I'll try what 2.7 suggested, and I'll bet I 'll have 4 working windows in no time! I've also got sticky remote mirrors, and door locks. But 1 thing at a time! Thanks! Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  23. Awesome pictures. We're patiently waiting for the snow to melt here in Michigan, so we can go Mudding as well! But it's pretty much Flat & Straight arounf these parts. Might have to go to the West Coast of the state to find some more interesting terrain. Any West Coast Michiganders on here? Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  24. What Tranny's will that engine bolt up to? I think it MIGHT be worth the trouble to get that into a Loyale/GL/Brat. Even with the SVX tranny, it would be a KILLER! 4 speed Auto, right? With the light weight of the EA82/81, it would be all but Bullet Proof... Okay, I'll wake up now:-p Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
  25. Did you dress up the Preasure Plate when you changed the clutch last time? I've made the mistake of NOT addressing that surface, and the New clutch slipped worse than the old one for a couple of hundred miles... Fat Tony - http://www.smashbandits.com
