H6 Swap...
BruceyWV replied to BruceyWV's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Got the engine, should order it next week, I'll update with pics when I get it. -
Calculated for mileage difference, I got about ~25 mpg in my outback at ~75 mph with my SSR's. At 75 mph with the tripple treads, I get about ~27 mpg.

H6 Swap...

Looks like I'm skipping the headgaskets. Any other while-its-out replacements suggested? I am also going to be getting a new set of belts for it, just because they're so cheap. Dont tell me I have to remove the timing chain cover just for it though? -

I doubt I can use my stock exhaust manifold. I wonder how much exhaust work I'll have to do? Damn, I need to borrow an H6 and set it next to mine. -

That was 2,150.00 Two thousand one hundred fifty. Yes, I know braking is going to be really ... american, but I'll probably get some upgraded pads and live with short pad life. If its just too little braking power, it still isnt a lot of money to find some better brakes. (Did you guys know my brakes have bigger discs in the back than in the front?) I talked with the stealership, and the mechanic there said a few of the 01's have come in for headgasket problems, along with a select few have a timing chain tensioner problem. For a couple bucks, why not bother with the headgaskets? I guess I might not and put the money into springs and brakes. I'm sure the EG33 is a great engine, but the EZ30 was made for my car, and I'm sticking to my guns and using it. Oh, guys. Have I mentioned Lesbaru spends the majority of its life at 75 MPH? I've averaged 35,000 miles a year with the last two cars I've had, and probably 85% of those have been on the highway. Something I forgot to check about the engine was the exhaust manifold. I didnt ask the yard where I'm buying the parts from if it came with it. -

I know this is what? A tripple post now. But I was asked to keep everyone updated on my progress with this. So I am. 2,150$ + 200$ shipping will get me: 1 H6 3.0 Engine with 6 month warranty. 1 ECU 1 Alternator attached to the engine 1 Power steering pump attached to the engine 1 A/C Pump attached to the engine 1 Starter attached to the engine 1 Wiring Harness from the engine to the ECU All I'd need after that would be a new radiator. I'll probably go all out and replace the headgaskets while its out of the engine. So thats another couple hundred dollars. Still under the 3,000$ for a used engine put in, and 5000 for a new one put in. Mechanics make good money. -

anyone see any issues with keeping the stock torque converter? I know its not fool proof, but cross referencing parts site with EJ25/EZ30, it seems power steering and AC pumps are the same.. I'm also going to replace the headgasket (on the ez30) while the engine is out of the car. Just to be safe. -

I live there, you're welcome to stop by my house anytime. I'm also not sure about the EG33, the EZ30 was designed to fit into my cars body.. Or maybe my body was designed to figt the EZ30? But I have the same tranny and share several components. The exhaust manifold is something I havent figured out yet. Whether to have one custom made or use the stock one. Oh, Also, I checked into the keys, no H6 owners have reported RFID's on 01~04's. Heres hoping. -

I'm putting it in the Lesbaru, a 2000 Outback. I also dont know about finding an entire car, but I will try to. -

I'll definately be looking into the key, I think I'll test drive a H6 and set it next to mine and see any differences. Oh, I wonder how more torque at 2000 RPM than my 4 cylinder ever made and 4.111 rear end will be? -
H6 Swap...

The only thing I've found is there seems to have been a problem with the first year having some rare headgaskets and timing chain problems, but none reported for 02. Thats all I've been able to find. -
The more I research this, the more likely it seems like its going to happen. Since my body style was made for an H6, this should be easier than other H6 swaps that have been put into Imprezas.... http://linaracing.com/impreza-h6-conversion-faq.cfm I'm planning on getting the Engine, Radiator, ECU, and depends on how I feel to get an upgraded Torque Converter and fuel pump. This will also be an 02~04 H6, not an 05 since the ECU seems to be a lot pissier and throttle by wire/avcs seems to be more trouble than its worth. I also know that the H6 has slightly stiffer springs and larger brakes than mine, but I think it will be fine. But yeah, in the planning stages now. Anyone have anything negative to say about the H6? I'm mainly doing this for reliability/torque. But everything I've found about the H6 basically calls them 'bulletproof'

thanks, he was a beast.

Hmmm gonna have to think this one over. I can get a 4 cyl for 1200$ with a 6 month warranty, or a 6 cyl for 2000$ same warranty. Drop and forget replacement for the 4... 4 banger has problems... obviously, I never even got around to the headgasket issues for my year. But new timing belt, headgaskets, and labor on it will be around 3000$ I'm suspecting. (that sound you hear is god laughing, he hates me.) H6... Also would need the ECU, engine mounts, and the slightly stiffer springs for it. So more like 2500$ plus labor and any maint items on it. I might need the 6 cyl Radiator and Fuel pump if I go that route too.... But my engine bay was made oversized because they are the only bodys that get the H6. (Until the Tribeca disaster anyway.) Same transmission even. Subaru's second biggest engine ever, weighing in at a massive 3.0 liter. But everything I've found about the 6 cyl labels them as 'bulletproof' There isnt even a goofy timing belt, so thats money saved down the road anyway. Or I could do a 2.2 swap? And have a bulletproof engine, its not like Lesbaru is going to get any slower. But with the 4++ Rear end and 210 ft lbs of torque, it might actually move with the H6. Another + For the 6, if I were to replace the engine and buy a new 6, I'd be stuck with all kinds of 'mandatory options'. That is, dual sunroofs (lol, gimmick), leather interior, etc. I like my complete lack of options, dont even got intermittent wipers as of now.
