Some advice... Save up for the tranny. Do not have an SVX as your only car Do not plan on having the same reliability of other Soobs With all that, Am I sorry I got my SVX and had to replace the tranny a month later and now have to replace it again??? NO, I love my car and all her problems... I will never get rid of my SVX, and will more than likely have another at some point. But, I hate to see people lay out a wad of cash then 5 months later decide to part it out because the trans went. They are wonderful cars, but they do have some quirks. Things to ask; Original tranny? Rebuilt? replaced with SOA reman? Tranny cooler installed? When? It seems that many dealers overprice these cars. Head over to www.subaru-svx.net there is a ton of info for you to read and learn. And there are always members cars going up for sale. These are cars that you can go back through the board and check the history on.

In Moosey's defense, he did get it a lot deeper than that before we left... Unfortunately both camera's had died by then. -

Sounds like a plan Hey Paul, do you have any EA81 front 1/2 shafts lying around that you want to get rid of. If so, bring 'em along. -

27/28 sounds good here -
Well I tried to snake it... nothing... Pulled the Intake manifold up enough to reach a finger into the head... nothing... So I figured I had nothing to lose... put the intake and carb back on and started her up.... She ran crappy for a while, wouldn't even let me rev, finally it seemed like it opened up and I could rev the engine but it still wasn't ideling right... The battery was getting low from cranking, so I hooked up the charger and ran to Advance for some more carb cleaner. Came back and at first it didn't want to start, but after enough cranking she turned over again and ran nice up above 2k, but below that she still idled funny, after a few more minutes at 3k, she was able to settle down. So I shut her down to put the airbox on, when I started her back up there is now a whistling??? I'm guessing a loose vaccuum line??? I'll work on that tomorrow night, but for now she is fixed. She still has some funk to her idle, I figure there are remnants of the towel in there and they'll clean up with a little more running. Thanks all for the advice.

So... I... no... I mean a friend of mine in the town down the road was working on his 86 Brat. He had to change the gaskets between the carb and intake. When he got it back together he ran it and it ran like crap, he then realized that he left the paper towel in the intake that he shoved in there to catch the gasket scrapings. When he took the carb back off, the towel was too far down one side of the manifold to be seen... So he then had enough smarts to know to pack up the tools and call it a night before he did any more damage... Some thoughts on how to handle it; - Use one of those spring grabby things to try and snake the towel out of the intake. - Rev the hell out it and "burn" up the towel - Pull the manifold and fish it out. - Use a torch down the manifold to burn it up before it goes through the valve, figuring that it will be easier to intake ash than a bounty?? Any other ideas besides the obvious dope slap??

I'm replacing the carb on my Brat with one I just snagged off a hatch from the yard. On the "new" carb there are two fittings that don't exist on the "Old" carb. The first one looks like a vacuum fitting just behind the idle screw above the throttle cable linkages and under the choke. There is a metal fitting on the engine right near there that had a cap on it, I'm assuming that is where I should connect to? Or should I cap the fitting on the new carb? These are shown in the attachments; "Front" and "Front Engine Fitting" I am pointing a pen at the fittings. The Second is also a vaccuum fitting at the top rear of the new carb. Right behind the intake. The fittings I think that goes to are just left of it right above where the radiator hose goes to the block. There are actually two fittings there. A front one and a back one. These are pictured in "Top" and "Side Engine Fittings"

The Linkage cable runs along the right side of the tranny (I guess the driver's side on yours) It is a cable like a bicycle brake cable, but heavier. If you get the car up on ramps you should be able to tell if that is the problem. There is a pin holding the cable onto the selector on the transmission. If that pin popped out or the nut holding the arm to the linkage on the trans came loose. It could act like that. Good luck

Keith, My guess is that the Imp is a 3.9 and the Leg is a 4.11. Other than that it will bolt right up. If the ratio is different, just grab the rear chunk and swap that too. Oh... I know the Tourque Conv from an Imp won't bolt to the flexplate on an SVX. I'm not sure how the IMP matched to a Leg?? So either plan to use your old TC or grab the flexplate out of the donor.

TC Lock Up??
Hocrest replied to Hocrest's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I know it isn't supposed to happen at full throttle, but we aren't running a typical set up... It's hard to give an RPM and speed, as when this occurs we are out on course. More concerned with cones than the dash. But it did happen at the same spots on the course, with different people driving. Also if you get off the throttle and slam it back down it will accelarate normally (incredibly:brow: ).
