  1. Turtle wax bug and tar remover and a little elbow grease. Both my be found at any auto store. Kurt
  2. Doh! I dont' know of any way it could... You'd love these new pugs and rubber Shawn. I'll post pics soon after I finally wash the car! Mideast winter road scum...
  3. I said screw it and went out anyway. The joints seem ok, no movement to speak of. Although when I pulled back and forth you can hear a metallic "rattle" inside the shaft. I know the shafts are hollow, but what else is inside that would make that sound?
  4. Thanks Ken, I thought both the front and rear were individually sealed. Good thing I didn't try! :-) The snow should be gone by tomorrow so I'll crawl up underneath there and look. Kurt
  5. As far as I know I can remove the rear driveline and drive with out it can't I? That will isolate the disturbance. If it dissapears ethen u joints are the way to go, if it doesn't tehn back to the front end. Kurt
  6. I will check it out. The amazing thing is I never once suspected the rear end. I'll take a look at it this weekend.
  7. I hadn't thought about the rear driveline...hmmm.
  8. Hey all. It's been a while since I started a new thread. I have spent the entire month of January trying to fix the front end vibration on the 82. I have had it to Dobbs (similar to Les Schwab's) 4 times. Tonight I picked it up and I was told they have pretty much done everything they can. Buuuuuuut...... After 3 alignments and re-balances I still have the same driveline vibration under accelleration and deceleration on hills, then also during straight-a-ways between 53-64 MPH. It comes and goes. I am convinced it is due to axle or rotor out of balance. During the 3rd re-balance at Dobbs I replaced the 13" rally alloys with Toyo 185/75/R13's and put on the Pugeot 15" snowflake's with Cobra GT 195/60/R15's. (BTW Ed, these are the rims I have been draggin' around for 4 years just waiting to put on!). So we know all rims and rubber are perfect. Which leaves only axle, rotor, or dragging brake. I rulled out motor mounts and clutch by hitting neutral at 60 and still had the vibrations. There is no lift. The axles are relatively new, Advanced auto re-mans. I am tempted to buy a set from the guy at CCR, but it might be cheaper to just have them done here at a Sub dealer $$$$$$. :-( Rotor are moded to vented disks and the calipers are both new rebuilts. all the hardware is under 1 year old. Any thoughts on the matter? By driving on the vibration for a while I have begun to ruin the inner right DOJ, you can here it begining to pop. (or is it the begining of the pop that is causing the vibrations...) If a tree falls in the forest... anyway.. I have already sunk 400.00 into parts and labor yet still have the issue. although it isn't as bad as it was now, that the steering is not sloppy. I welcome any suggestions! Kurt
  9. if your y pipe is good, then you'd be MUCH better off istalling new pipe and a new can.
  10. Rememberto use caution if you must "gently" massage the stub out with a bluint instrument. Protect the threads or you will regret it once you go too put it all back together!
  11. Hey Shawn that is a beautiful engine, where did you get it? Kurt
  12. Jerry and Ben at Mountain tech are good. They have been doing Soobs for years. But I do find them overpriced. Richie is great, he's a member of this board and does quality work. I would check him out. Kurt
  13. Try TNT's sub contracter "chicago express" They run off a boardand are real reasonable. Only drawback is waiting for a week or so for it to be picked up.... Kurt
  14. What model vehicle and do you have a picture? That would help out on your explanation. Kurt
  15. Haha Dave- It's funny you mention "(crashboxing's not that practical in SFO), and stop-and-go (on hills nonetheless:rolleyes: )" One of my cable snaps was just after the Golden Gate headed N on 101 towards Santa Rosa! It was in my 81 Blue Brat and I was on my way to visit Grandma... anyway I had to finish the trip north 60 mi? W/ no cable.. synchro by ear baby! What sucked was going through downtown Santa Rosa with all those lights! I ende up staying overnight and catching the bus back to Frisco for work monday, then the next weekend I went up and changed the cable. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad it didn't happen in town!!!!!!!!! Holy crap I could only imagine.. I do agree though, it is a last resort. however if you know your vehicle you can do fairly well with little damage. Kurt
  16. If there is anything on all my subaru's I would shoot the designer's for it would the clutch cable. They SUCK. They always break in the same place everytime, right at the atachment point / clamp assembly under the dash. I have owned 10+ brats over the years and everyone has blown a cable. Although I have had better luck with Subaru cables (vice shucks or some other aftermarket oem). But sadly even the Subaru ones go eventually. I carry a spare. They are a very easy roadside repair, unless it is raining, then it sucks even worse! I don't know any tricks to make them last longer. Mine have all semed to go at different times, theres no standard time frame. All I can say is use Subaru, and have a spare. Oh yah, Tim is right, you can crashbox fairly well if you know your vehicle sounds. Going up seems fine, but I can only downshift to third without the clutch I can't seem to get down to second. Kurt
  17. Rush. If I turn it up I don't have to listen to other garbage, like NPR.....
  18. John- You might want to check the batteries on 1 and 2, they probably need charging. Kurt
  19. Tim - Junta Virus. I believe. In My 81 Brat (Brat#3 sold to Mountain Tech) I had the exact same thing. I came back from the Gulf in 93' and pulled the Brat out of the Barn. While getting it going and trying everything out, the fan kept clicking, like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle. I just figured the bearings were going out and kept on driving for months. Finally one day I decided I was going to replace the fan assembly and took off the cover. I laughed so hard when I found what was inside! A field mouse was dried up lengthwise, outstreched around the curve of the squirel cage fan. His dried tail was sticking out of the cage a bit and that was what was clicking as it spun around! The funniest part was why it got there. Gripped tight in his tiny claws, stretched out like a diving touchdown, was a 1/2 inch peice of french fry! He had found it under my seat and crawled up into the fan to live / eat and didn't plan on me coming home!!! I just cleaned out the cage compartment and put everything back together. It had been so long any smell was gone. It seems to be a very common occurance for our heating designs. Good luck- Kurt
  20. Hey dave just remember you need to give your auto slushy some credit for getting out of the gumbo in Onowa! You were one of the few. Kurt
  21. It's only a matter of time Jaime, resistance is futile.... Kurt
