If it tha chrome style high arm rest it should use the seat bolts on the lower holes, and the seat belts attach to the upper holes... I just had the privelege of seeing my first one yesterday at Micks. Kurt

Yeah that's what I figured. Very common. Get a new gasket which is very cheap, and replace. just be patient and careful when you pull the pump. That pump has been there for years and it won't want to come off very easily, so if you try to pry it side to side to loosen it it may crack. The pump itself is probably a good pump. So I would go with trying to do just the seal first. if you do end up cracking the base (inspect it after removal because the cracks can be hairline) just go get a new one. No biggie, and they are not super expensive. -

As far as your oil leak, My first suspition would be the oil pump gasket. For all my Brats have had the same problem at one point or another adn that was the oil pump gasket failed. Although the pumps are usually still good, you have to be careful when removing them to fix the gasket because they are thin and aluminum and the base can crack very easily. My next guess would be the oil pan gasket, it is cork and the old ones became real brittle on both my 79 and my 78. Kurt -

Hey Everyone! Mick knows I have been having major virus problems promting me to be computerless for a couple weeks. But all is corrected now and I have added "Ad-aware" and "Pop-up Stopper" plus a new updated version of Norton so I much more prepared now! I do plan on going to the Midwest meet. I am now in Missouri so I would like to see you all again. It's been probably 4 years since I saw Tim, Shawn and Mick. I do agree with Tim in that we need a 2 day thing. Sat / Sun? I have also made some SOA friends down here and may be able to help out Shawn with some door prize stuff... At least some small freebies for everyone. Kurt

You won't feel it really on a straightaway at speed. When your at speed the axle is "straight" and balanced with a constant forward motion, any slack caused by a damaged CV is tight. When you decelerate the motion relaxes and allows the slack to "clunk" or vibrate. However, if the axle damage is more advanced, you can get quite a vibration at speed. When you are turning, the stress on the outer joint intensifies the slack caused by bad ball bearings in the joint, causing the signature click and pop. Your wheel is not going to fall off, I drove from Vail Colorado, to St. Louis, MO on two jacked up cv's that blew going over the pass. I have yet to see the inner DOJ go bad, in my case it has always been the outer CV. Kurt

Speaking to a WRX owner at Adrenaline Motor sports yesterday, we got to talking about SCCA and other soobie stuff. He mentioned that there is supposed to be the biggest subaru meet in the world in July somewhere in Illinois. I don't know how big is big to this guy, but if it is true- wow. I would definitely be in! He's supposed to E-mail me with info, so we'll see. Anyone else out there heard of this? Kurt

I have owned a Brat since Highschool (13 yrs), 9 total to date with the most at one time being 4. It's always been Brats, no wagons or hatches. I have a love for the Brat before the Subaru, if that makes sense. Kurt -
Just a little update- Yestarday it warmed up to about 50 so I didn't have to wait for the garage. I fired it up while my wife watched the engine bay and nothing bad happened and she ran normal. I shut it down and took a good look at the belt and it was definitely the culprit. I was cooked halfway through yet still had it's shape! Water pump had to have been frozen. Any way with that mystery solved I will drain and refill the radiator with a 30/70 mix and see if that makes a difference. I don't know what's in there right now, I have never been particular about the mix ratio. Lessons learned. Kurt

No engine block heater , Shawn. Where would I find one aftermarket that would work witht the 78' Don't they involve insertion into to the oil pan? I'm familiar with the basic idea, but never used one.... (Gotta love Oregon..) Are some of them like heat tape? Kurt

There's no doubt that there is less room in th 1st Gen. I own and drive both and the difference is huge. Even if it is only a matter of a few square inches, the feel is much larger. However I enjoy driving the 78 more because of the solid feel of the control, sound of the engine quick response etc... it is a fun car to drive. Kurt -
Usually 10W 30 in all my vehicles. But then I'm used to the west coast. I thought of the belt / water pump combo.. I'm going to leave it sit until I get the axles done on the 82 then bring it into the garage to warm up. see what happen then.
