http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=70681 check this thread, didn't even go after the harder trails. more to come stay tuned over the next few months! here's a few for those to lazy to click over... :headbang: i'll always rock my subaru, (no pun intended) eventhough i got a yota!

well i'm going to start looking into getting chromoly 4340 stub shafts turned. wanted to see who would honestly want to and will back up with money if i find a company to turn some. this is kind of like when we found a company to make the lockers, but everyone was cheap and didn't want to fork up the initial cost to make it an available option and for the price to come down after initial production and research costs. figure a few hundred per set... speak up or forever hold your peace. you guys can keep digging, or start making more options available by helping with the first batches and they could be avail at a later date. i'm done breaking these stubs. and they need to be upgraded or sas... i'd like to keep the roo, a roo for now. so who's in if i can find a company to turn them?

well i'm going to do some leveling on the front end and some suspension tweaking. i need to get some lift blocks (1" to 1.5") for the strut towers of an ea82 suspension. if anyone can make some, let me know! and how much. just need the blocks for the strut tops. and i'll be tweaking the rest. too much rake on the car and i need to fix it. if i have to i'll make them... but would prefer someone else to and buy 'em.

and those were the 4.0+ rated washes we were going through. out of a 5.0 rating scale. scraped the sub frame and love tapped some rocks here and there. need to build the tcase skid...
-
well went out and did some light wheeling today, out in the laguna mountains area. shaking down the bugs out of the car. didn't air down at first, cause there was a ford expedition following me on the easy trail that follows the washes i was in. oops, bound and broke a stubby shaft! (anyone have a few they want to sell?) i only have like 2 more spares... so a little over half the day i was running on one rear shaft and a front lsd. which sucks going up climbs... night day differance in traction... so here's some pics! hope you enjoy! and whoever says subaru's can't play... :-p

i've had to do it in a lsd a few times. problem is this ones welded tight and access from the other side is slim. i'll look more into it tomorrow when i have it off. if i can even unbolt it... don't remember how thourough i was with welding it...

the topic has been around for the length of this board. back 5 or 6 more years ago, when a lifted subaru was still far and between. this particular thread is from 2004, but the topic goes way back and has been beaten to death. :horse: and one of the main topics, that turned people into the whole please search, it's answered every week... use the search link... but lets not revive these threads... search but don't post on the old stuff.

tie rod's in. now i need to play with them to make it so it doesn't jerk slightly right when i let go of the gas. maybe the right one needs replacing too... did a little investigation on the rearend... it feels like i might of just broke a stubby off in the diff... and if it's in there good enough, it is not going to be fun to remove... i jacked the rear and can jiggle and pull the axle cup away from the diff slightly. the other side that still turns the drive shaft doesn't pull out... maybe my welds held :-\ hooked up the rear driveline again and it started making the noise in the tcase. so out goes the tcase for sure. and try to find my tool to unbolt a stubby and swap one out with my spare diff. tomorrow! then to the steel yards to find a chunk of 1/4" plate to make a skid for the tcase. 8 ball mine's trails this saturday if i'm lucky! almost forgot, this week i need to make vent lines for the diffs and bring the front into the engine compartment and the rear into the cab.
-
thanks for rubbing it in!... 5 months and 11 days! well first weekend of feb. i'm gonna go play in the 8 ball mine and laguna mountain washes! :-p:headbang: i'll have to get some real pics of lil' roo on the trail since all the mods... it only took me 3 years to get around to getting pictures... lack of digi camera and neglected vehicle... now i got a phone and an slr digi camera, which i'm selling...

i'll be 30 minutes from tahyua, i'll actually be living in wauna on the way up to tahuya, i'll be there riding my quad all the time. it's about 45 minutes to evans creek also...

well the replacement credit card came... so i got the wheel bearings, seals and ordered the stripped out tie rod. today i installed the new hub on the drivers side! perfect fit! i don't have the gravel guard on the disc anymore. the one on there didn't fit, oh well. also come to find out the actual discs are non vented... i'll have to hunt some vented ones down and pop them on. but the calipers are for the vented hubs... oh well works for me. brake pads are still excellent. and it stops a hell of a lot better with both bolts in the caliper... friday i'm going to put the tie rod on. probably weld the rear diff up again and reenforce it... hook the rear driveline up and check for bad u-joints. if they are all good, then i'll swap tcases, and attempt to find some steel to fab a skid plate on. and maybe saturday an easy test run! then the yuma 4 wheelers run feb. 3rd. a moderate trail run at Picacho - Copper Basin area.

we got beat up in boot camp, nobody tells. it's a part of training. suck it up. how else are you going to be conditioned for war! oh, i'm stressed! here's my card taliban!! don't shoot!! exactly why our military is going to hit the ground. to pr, for a force that is supposed to be hardened and ready for war. just enjoy and savor it all, the a/f is great for catering to there troops. but ignore all this and back to your hatch! get any more done yet?

more of a 5 or 6 year old thread... but buy it, quicker and easier for your first lift.

pics, tons of pics this time greg! i want to see ken's new rig he's been hiding! :headbang:lol , if not some staging area pics should satisfy me.
-
well went to the post office and checked my mail! the new driver's side steering knuckle came in the mail! measured out the brake bolts! perfect measure! thanks monstaru! cheers! come payday, installing new wheelbearings, tie rod and slapping it into the rig! this weekend planning on the tcase swap from my datsun, and figure out how i'm going to fab the datsun's skid plate to the subaru. since it lacks one and that tcase hangs low. my goal is for a light test run first weekend of feb... with luck!

yeah but eric is still open diffs in that vid, your subaru's i bet have a welded diff? a locker or traction device is a night and day differance from open diffs. another buddy of mine eric morton, he had his yota, 33's welded diffs and stock gearing, made cake work out of all my trouble on lake isabel's rock climbs. i had a 4/3" lift, welded rear and 27" tires at the time... lack of gearing and clearance is what hung me up and made it a long day. hence, the second tcase, 4.11 gears, 31's, welded rear and lsd front now. lil' roo creeps up everything.
-
i never like to drive autos, or own one, i speed. another reason my yota is being geared the hell down. i like the suby at around 60:1, the yota will have 223:1, 98:1, 47:1, and 20.68:1 4wd and 2wd options (i just realized my 4hi is going to be about as low as a stock suby ). because of the gear driven case you can get the doubler and all the goodies, like the 4.7 kit in one of the cases. the auto tranny, you have to buy a 500 dollar adapter to adapt the auto to the stronger gear driven case, then 2 cases, a 4.7 kit and the $300 adapter to use the dual case kit, then the twin sticks... already got it for my 84 sr5  good luck toys are great fun! sorry for the thread jack...... but there's at least 3 yota owner's posting in here! :-p

it all depends on the setup, gearing, driver and what the obstacle sort of requires. like i said when lil' roo is up i'll get some rock climbing pics. a lot of the ones i posted of downhill, is because we were scouting the trail. so that is the only way i've been on it and the only time, i left to bootcamp the next month. that was the last time i was at evans creek. i had a blast that day. his brat is still down? hmm...
-
yeah, and when you go to a 6" and a above with a subframe and a second tcase... your talking a lot of fabwork. but then you go to the argument. your never lifting the body away from the frame (unibody!) and the engine and tranny stay in place... :-p which is what suspension lift is. they also use blocks to do suspension lifts on hum-vees and death blocks on the rear of regular lifts.... just fuel to fire... but in all essence do the lift kit. you'll save yourself time and money in the long run. if your going to do something like the 8" lift i have. there's a lot of custom fabwork, subframe and since your at... it be a smart idea to tie a second tcase in. and maybe some solid axles.... :-p
-
and toyota auto tranny's suck!! there's no options for it like a real man's toyota with a 5 speed. :-p if you are using a toyota with a manual tranny the tcase is gear driven and not chain driven. a lot stronger and gear kits and doublers to boot. if you gear it right you shouldn't even need to touch the clutch. i rarely touch the clutch when i'm crawling in my subaru... granted it has 3 times lower gearing than stock and still almost 20:1 lower than a stock toyota. my other toy... that's another story... 223:1 real man's yota :-p

some evan's creek for you. a little bit of lower 311 and another intermediate trail at evan's. didn't get any photo's of upper 311 last time. broke my camera before i went up that trail last time. and upper 311 is up, up and over. not much photo oportunity, unless someone's hung up or stuck.
