  1. cross brace them. see how they run and put in your plans to make drop brakets front and rear and shackle reversle on the front. then shorten the shackles. it'll probably survive awhile. but it's unneeded stress and quirky handling characteristics.
  2. brace it with square stock in the center. they'll still be long and funky, but they should hold together for a few trips. as long as they are like 1/4" steel shackles. you can try, since you don't have much time. good luck.
  3. have fun with being pampered in the airforce. that maid service we had when i stayed on an a/f base in kadena, okinawa, just killed me. or the pampered chef meals in the chow hall... and they were still complaining about how bad they had it... have fun, and try not to use them stress cards in bootcamp... cakewalk, definately goodluck, and keep contributing to the goodwork our troops are doing!
  4. is it lifted? it's probably an illegal bumper height. most subaru's are.
  5. you can have as many offroad lights as you want in washington. if they are highpowered offroad lights, they are supposed to be covered. if they are just driving lights, i wouldn't worry. but only 4 lights can be operating at a time.
  6. shackle reversal, means to reverse the shackles on the springs. in other words search on the marlincrawler board, pirate board or nw-wheelers board. make drop hangers to mount the springs in the front and run the shackles in the rear. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69251 a link to my yota build. that way it tracks better and you don't have crazy long shackles to stress and break stuff. as for lockers, if you are running toyota axles. the proper gearing would be the 5.29's and just run aussie lockers front and rear. $260 each delivered to your door. and use the yukon gear sets, don't get the cheap brands. www.offroadlockers.com something else to think about or toss around, is upgrading to a toyota tcase. ott industries makes a divorced adapter for toyota cases... and then you can go to a doubler later on down the road... i have an extra laying around. it's a forward shift, so you'd have to convert it to a top shift. with a toy case and 5.29's you'll be at about 72.6:1 crawl ratio. same as a nissan, or round abouts. just a thought. and for steering don't use the push pull out of an '85. they brake with big tires and bad bump steer with large lifts. i can look up all the details to make your own crossover steering kit, or buy a hysteer kit from www.trailgear.com. but use a steering box from an ifs toyota, to use side by side steering from a yota box.to make yourself a crossover steering, i think it's the passenger side steering link, rod or whatever it is from the ifs trucks you'll need also. then you can make you own crossover steering. eventually upgrade to longfield 30spline shafts in the front http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com and chromoly's in the rear... or that's what i'm going to do...
  7. use a divorce adapted toyota tcase. get the adapter from ott industries. then buy 2 used toyota cases, a marlin crawler doubler kit... and you'll up that number from 22:1 to 50:1 with the first yota case alone. now that's a good jump. then activate the second case you'll be at 114:1. if you add a twin stick kit to that rear case, you can use up to that in 2wd... but then your talking axle upgrades... or use a zuk case and get a gear kit for it... cut your body tub and suck the tcase up flat, to make a flat belly... just my 2 cents... a gear kit in a subaru tranny is a waste of time and money. we looked into it about 4 years ago. too much, for what you get. same reason we can't get a locker in a suby diff. no one wants to fork up cash. we found companies that would. but it was an arm and leg for the first ten out of the factory...
  8. swap in nissan or divorced adapted toyota tcase... and you'll run it with an ea82 just fine... fix your gearing, and you don't need to compansate by extra power so soon in the game. i'm running 31's on mine with a ccr built ea81. i have no problems. if i can't make it in subaru low, drop into the nissan low and it'll go right up...
  9. that's probably what i'll be using on lil' roo when i move back to washington... cheap garden edging... down here they don't really care... and same with the yota. but i'm going to have to figure a way to remove it while on the trail. some sort of quick release.
  10. keep updates and some pictures!
  11. just a couple suggestions really quick. do a shackle reversal on the front end. that long of shackles in the front isn't going to track well. same reason jeeps do a shackle reversal. which springs are you using? go with some 5 leaf waggoneer springs all around or with 63" chevy's in the rear. i got the 5 leaf waggy springs on my yota. very soft and flexy. otherwise it's looking great. still deciding whether i want to put the locked up dana 44's under my subaru. i have them lying around house. keep us updated! july and august wheeling trips this year. i'm out of the corp and bringing lil' roo back up. also finishing up the toyota! check the off topic area for my toyota build. cheers, and hope to see you on trail in a few months.
  12. well i might have the car done by next month. if so i'm getting a run together. but it's not going to be a cake walk. so if everyone would want to do offroading, then superstition mt's in cali or rolls ohv outside of scottsdale.
  13. sorry rob, i wasn't down that way, no number and like i said in the pm... i got sidetracked/blinded...
  14. won't be starting to work on the car till the 15th of jan. if it was feb. yes, but jan, no.... i'll be in glamis the first 3 weekends...
  15. i fly to washington tomorrow, so if want them i got to find out tonight, so i can pack them.
  16. rancho's are what rob had on his. i have ea82 rear struts on my ea81's 8" lift. i have brackets for about a 6 inch lift if you want to use ea82 struts with the torsion bars tuned down or removed...
  17. it's emptied. that's odd it said i had a lot more room... and it wasn't full... but i emptied it.
  18. why leave it on if your going to disconnect it?...... it's usless sitting there and not bolted on...
  19. superstition mountains in el centro area is also another good area. from mild to wild, dunes, rocks and a fairly easy trail all the way around the park... should be free to camp. i've been there a few times, good area!
  20. i skipped most of the posts... but i vote gordon wells to glamis on sand highway. pretty easy trail from the north to south imperial sand dunes. and 20 minutes from my house... the holidays are busy and a whip flag is required and a 25 dollar week pass or 90 dollar yearly pass. ehrensburg area is another option, about half way between pheonix and la off of the 10... i won't be ready by jan. 15th but should be if i bust my @$$ for the 15th of feb. anza borregga, (octillo wells ohv area? correct) haven't been there yet. but there's some good wheeling that's supposed to be out there... i'd have to definately say plenty of wheeling to head out there. my lil' roo sits on 31 bfg m/t's, dual tcased, built weberized ea81, ea82 suspension and 5 speed dual range, 4.11 gears lsd in the front and a lincoln locker in the back... wheeling needed...
  21. http://www.pnw4wda.org/trailjam/index.htm i've been wanting to make this run for years (since i was 14). i should be getting back a few days before the kick off. the shoestring and kaner trails along with the funny/moon rock trails is what i'd want to run. so, well equiped subies only for those trails. but we should make a presence and bring a load of subaru's with us, there's trails for all capabilities from just a lift and tires to the dual t's and locked. let's make a subaru presence this year, and show the offroad world a rising vehicle in the offroad arena! let me know. it will determine whether i lally gag my way back to washington or rush on up and get it all ready to rock~n~roll...
  22. hopefully we can get a small run together by febuary march time frame.
