Rear end Ratio (Zap or anyone who knows)
Rooinater replied to lumpc1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i rode welded diff in the rear for 2 years up the passes. you just have to relearn how you can drive. how you corner. and pay a lot more attention to how the traction to your tires feel. this year i'll even have a front lsd to go with that welded rear. so i'll be even more careful. slow down a little in corners. i've driven my dads truck with front and rear detroit lockers in the snow and ice. it's definately different. but in deep snow it's a lot nicer in the rear than being open. cause you don't just loose traction. a lot of the time you can keep going. and watch the open diffs slide. in actual snowy areas. -
anyone there is has broken engines. or don't like what i wheel. it's really bumming me out and is not helping me keep up beat. like seriously not having trees or dirt is really getting to me. and knowing that everywhere up north is snowing :boohoo: is not helping... When your on the trail i'm used to the beautiful greenery and senic views. well that ain't here. when you are in the rocky hills or valley's all you see is sand and rock, maybe a field off in the distance. but after you cross the laguna mtns or the muggins mtns it is flat as the i can see. not to mention these mtns are only like 600 to 800 ft tall... :boohoo:

well i was duing my normal weekend last weekend, searching for trails. the terrain here is so differant than washington... i was following this nice easy little wash trail and it turned into a ridge line trail. it got a little more interesting, and then... the tracks started going down this semi steep inbankment( not to mention sharp shail type rock.)about the halfway point tracks dissapeared... from up above the wash/valley didn't look bad at all... got down there and started treking along. the rocks got larger and more of them. came around a cactus and saw what lie ahead... a mini boulder field, rocks between a 1 foot around to 4' long and 3' high... didn't want to go there with out another vehicle.so tried heading back up the hill... no such luck. clutch started frying. no way in hell i was making it back up. luckily i had my gps and it was telling me i had some waypoints within a mile. so i started walking in the "easy looking direction" even though these were in the oppisite direction of my waypoints. but about a 1/2 mile down this valley was an impassible subaru pincher.5 foot tall rocks on either side, that would have smashed my subaru in and been a pain in the rear to remove it. so i walked up on the ridge line the other way to find what i recognize. i found a trail i've been on and walked till it connected to another trail. then walked back up the wash to my car. i marked every easy way around i could and did that all the way back to the car. it took 2-3 hours to go less than one mile with only one vehicle. my clutch is now rest in piece. this was a trail not treaded so no marks of where to go were anywhere but behind me. many times i got hung up on large rocks, and had to use a combo of a highlift and a comealong. it was narly and after i get the new gears i'll run it again, and get the gps coordinates to get in, cause once your in there's no turning back..... i think i'll name it "damion's wash" the only trail in washington i can think that it compares to is lake isabele. on lake isabele about 3/4 the way up the trail you go up this nasty rock face (similar to the one on the express trail at walker valley) and then it becomes a mine field of boulders and they increase in size all the way to the ricoty old bridge. it's a land mark on that trail you can't forget. the bridge is falling apart and holes all over. tire placement is critical. then after the bridge you come to another boulder field of rock 2' to 4' around and that's your trail. then all the most diff obstacles are after the bridge. all the ones before the bridge are intermediate or less. and the trail is nearing the end at the bridge.

think you are going through withdrawls!! go somewhere where there is no subies.... then you will know withdrawls. not to mention no trees, alot of rocks and then sand in the valleys, or a combo. it rains here 2 times a year. :boohoo: can''t wait to move to the northwest!! and having trouble finding actual trails, you can make your own anywhere though...

i'll do that tonight. i was trying to figure a better way to do that. new project.

30" tires/4.44 possibility
Rooinater replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
according to corky (drrx) he told me that you can't do that. you'd be better off doing what i'm doing and putting a divorced nissan t-case. to get a real low range. and then you could put 4.44 front and rear via the 2 rear style diffs. -

well i bought the web space, domain name, and the cable modem. so it's an offiical site now! West Coast Stompers the trail/gps section and a few others are still under construction. but the majority is up and running. in the work of making a links page to here and other sites. i need to put the pictures in flash or something to speed up loading for the 56k modems. If anyone is interested in joining. give me an email. everyone that has driven a trail with me is eligible for membership. i.e. Qman, Zapar, tex... i know we are all members of the HP but this is also focused even more for the southern part of the west coast. and those that would like to join. but i'm going to try to have a meet in washington every year or other year. all comments and suggestion on the site are greatly appriciated.

just what it states. tentative imperial dunes run halloween night and afternoon. Sunday Superstition mtn run. superstition has everything from easy to difficult trails and open dunes. flag not required. imperial dunes is just miles of open dunes. a red 12"x6" red triangular flag is required on all vehicles running in the dunes. along with at a stationary position it must be 8' off the deck. post if you are interested. and meeting places and directions will be given.

sort of will be driving through san diego that weekend if all goes well. i'm driving my car up to mudrats that weekend. so the 8" lift can be fabbed on along with a few other mods. will you be in san diego any time after the new years?? it's only like 2 to 2.5 hrs away from here. to camp pendelton it's 3 hrs. -
if austin doesn't want it. it'll go up for grabs. it's a used kit. it'll be being removed after thanksgiving. when mudrat starts working on my car to make the new and larger lift kit.
-
i'll sell you my complete 4/3" kit... for about $200

ssr's come in 15 and 14 at a 27" tall tire. i recommend them, for best offroad traction.

going right now to scope out and play at superstition, i'll tell you how good it is. -
i do remember when i first came here. qman you don't have to go back and find all the questions i have asked. because i'd be here for months on end. that's the major point i was trying to say, options need to be left open. if i find some post of a question i know the answer i answer it. because that was the treatment i was given. i had a door of info opened to me. i know i've annoyed people by asking q's over and over. but i was never turned down. if someone knew about it i would be told, or given directions to where i could try to find my answer. never was i given the treatment of it's not there. like right now i'm looking for the rummered 5.13:1 gearsets for our rearends. i'd like to put those in eventually after i get the divorced t-case. if i was told it's not there i wouldn't be here. with out the hp, the kindness of the hp i wouldn't be here today, ken and eric especially have helped me a lot with my progression to be where i am, i'm still very green behind the ears but absorbing all i can.
