  1. ok im slowly re-doing the interior of my '84 wagon, the final result will be unveiled at Carlisle, but because of the snow we just got i wanted to get some pics of the sube at night with the lights on. this thing rocks in the snow, thats actually 3 in with a top layer of ice that its sitting on, this car is so light! normal headlights Highbeams all lights (highbeams + 3 55w aux lights) all lights again from outside all lights from the front (one highbeam is blown) Just random pics in the snow THE INTERIOR!!!!
  2. from my own experiance i would say a bad spark. check all your plugs, wires, disty cap and rotor. i wouldnt worry about the coil as the stock ones last quite a long while. make sure all connections/leads are clean and fitting snug. even one loose plug wire can cause a bad sputter uphill. just figure, taking 5 min to go over these little things first can save you hours of work tearing into your carb and fuel supply system looking for a problem that might not be there. good luck!
  3. If your really serious about this and want to do it right i suggest you get in touch with "gotrocks", hes a new member here but he's very experianced with rockcrawlers...he built this: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showpost.php?p=572074&postcount=14 I hope it all works out for ya, make sure you take pics of all the progress it'll be fun to watch it grow. goodluck!
  4. ok so i noticed this a while ago, but cant find any mention of it, and it bugging me to no end....why was he banned?
  5. yeah im gonna take it easy, ive put quiet a bit of work into this and i dont wanna mess it up. dont worry this car will be in tip top shape for carlisle! i figure a snow run would be perfect, its easier on the cars (softer to drive on and less abrasive then the sand that gets kicked up into everything) so im waiting for a big storm to really have some fun! although a beach run out on the island would be great, i have a friend in Merrick that i could visit at the same time.
  6. I was wondering if i should even reply to this thread cuz u know im already coming, but what the heck!....IM IN!!! WE NEED MORE PEOPLE, C'MON EVERYONE!!!!!!! LETS GO HAVE SOME FUN WITH OUR SUBIES!!!!!!!
  7. thanks guys...i was waiting for the war to end before jumped back in. im gonna get that EGR cleaned out real good, then when i get the tools i'll do a compression test. which is better of test? the type that uses compressed air to pressurize the cylinder or the one that just reads the pressure when u crank over the engine? i have a compressor so i think im gonna get the first type. plus then i can tell where the air leaks out i.e. through the coolant into the radiator; bad headgasket, or through the crankcase; bad rings, or through the carb; bad valves..... i think is easier to do and u can really get more info out of it then just PSI numbers. but i'll accept all opinions.

  9. yes u want to disconnect the fuel pump so that when u crank over the engine it doesnt fire up on the other 3 cylinders! that could be bad. u should also pull the plug wire off the coil so that u dont get spark and fire up the engine on whatever fuel it can suck up from the lines between the fuel pump and the carb, remember theres gas in the bowl of the carb too.
  10. damn why didnt i think of that, yeah wow blew right by me. thanks guys! im still gonna fix the other stuff at least i know that'll help a little. and as soon as this cold weather ends im putting my regular tires and 13in wagon wheels back on! as for calculating the milage from now on...forget it...if my first year of college as a mechanical engineer taught me anything....its that calculus is a bigger PITA then fixing anything on my car!
  11. im using my trip odometer because my gas gauge doesnt work, so everytime i fill up i calculate the milage and then reset it. ive run seafoam throught the gas, and some in the oil for just a day before i changed it. then i also ran another whole can through the engine via the carb at high rpm. i guess im just going to have to check the wheel bearing, its the rear so its a PITA to replace. also this isnt a feedback so no codes to check. does anyone know the actual capacity of these tanks, i know my original manual and the brochure from '84 both say 14.5gal but i emptied the tank completely (till the car stalled and wouldnt start) then refilled and it was slightly less then 12 gallons.
  12. ok i'l check the EGR, cant replace the canister as i threw it out...oops. and i'll have a look at the pcv valve too....maybe a carb rebuild is in order...but it looks so clean!
  13. its been running like this since i got it back in september, just kinda ignored it. the milage was the same before the bigger tires probs 2-3mpg better, i expected it to drop a little. yeah i'll have to check the plugs and the brakes. ive put new pads on since i got it but that was during the first week of driving it. i also noticed there really isnt anything to pull the pads away from the rotors when u let off the brakes, like a return spring so maybe they are rubbing. oh and its a 4spd manual with d/r i should also mention, i put all that new stuff on because the car hadnt been run in about 6 years when i got it....but the sucker fired right up first time!
  14. ok 14-15 mpg on an '84 GL wagon w/EA81 is absolutely unacceptable! timing: 8deg btdc no AC compressor new oil less then 150 miles new oil filter less then 150 miles new gear oil less the 150 miles perfect tire pressure checked weekly on 225/70R14 new fuel filter/fuel vapor seperator fuel pump runs great EGR not hooked up, vacum hose capped charcoal canister removed and all hoses capped carb looks great, really clean, jets r clear and free flowing, accel pump works great too new disty cap and rotor new plugs NGK's New plug wires 8mm accel's new accel superstock coil shifting at 3500rpms mostly cruising at 55mph so i should be getting optimum milage one bad wheel bearing but i don think it would make that much of a difference so after all this im really really stumped. any suggestions are welcome. i would like to get around 35-40mpg as ive heard from others....im blowing through cash on gas i fill up almost 3 times a week!
  15. could be a bad heater core valve. look under the driver side footwell where the heater core hoses come in, they go to a valve that usually has a black plastic cover over it. if u pull that cover off you will see the valve with a metal actuating rod that goes up to the hot/cold knob on the center dash. make sure its open all the way, sometimes they can get stuck, i had to put a spring on mine to get it to open up to hot when i turned the knob.
  16. red x's? are you talking bout the tailights on the jeep hurricane? yeah their kinda weird. and that bolt pattern is odd, it would be nice to find out what size it is though. it looks darn close to the 4x140. if it is or was an SWRT standard size then it would prob be online somewhere in a rule book.
  17. GD's right, the best way to do it is just lift it. although GD i think he was talking about extending the leading rods to push the lower control arms forward. im not sure thats even going to move it far enough as the pivot wouldnt allow enough forward movement. you would have to cut the control arm , bend it forward then weld in a plate. and then you would have to adjust the tie rods (lengthen them) to correct the alignment. WAY too much work if u ask me. so like GD said, get some blocks cut and just bolt them in. and im sure if u were thinking about doing all that other work u would have a welder or at least access to one to do the steering shaft extension. how big do u want to go? i have an '84 GL wagon with 225/70R14 and it only took about 5 min with a hammer and some metal shears to get it to fit right. they rub slightly on the inner frame (unibody?) but only at full lock. and even then the contact patch on the frame is only .5in in width. as for the rear, i just cranked the heck outta the torsion bar and they fit perfect. either way u go, good luck!
  18. the mixture screw is only for idle. adjusting it changes only the idle mixture and has no effect on the mixture at any other throttle position. try adjusting this after your car warms up and it might help your cold idle problems. just what i know, hope it helps!
  19. im not the original owner of my '84, but i am the second, and im good friends with the original owner and he still sees the car regularly. its great because i know the complete history of everything that happened to the car, and have all receipts from any work the was ever done to it! ive only had the car since september, so he had it from then till back in '84 when it was new!
  20. haha i know this might be a long shot but.....are those wheels the orignal 4x140 bolt pattern or am i just crazy?
  21. that belongs to REXSPEEDWORTHY. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=70280
  22. that would be a great opportunity. i live just 10 min from the cherryhill building. theres actually 2 different buildings about 3 miles apart from eachother. but ive been there before when they had rally cars and drag cars out for demo's in the parking lot. yes i saw the subaru wrc rally car drifting around that parking lot. i got to talk to a couple of the mechanics that were next to the support trucks. their all really friendly and love to teach u anything u want. too bad the building security didnt think so either, i got chased away after about 10 min. but yeah it was cool, u need earplugs to stand next to those rally cars at full throttle. and u need those headphone like ear coverings if u wanna get next to the drag car even at idle. that thing is scary loud! they had the cars out to show off to all the ceo's and bigshots at SOA. i could still hear the rally cars 5 miles away as i left!
  23. well i actually finished everything yesterday. turns out that circuit board is ONLY for the cruise control, which had been previously dissabled on the car. so i removed most of the rest of the system cleaned the contacts on the board, put it all back together and....voila it works just the way it used to, runs perfect! i repaired the rust holes under the windshield and patched the ones in the floor. also got some "extra" work done while the dash was out. but youll all have to come to Carlisle if u wanna see! thanks again to everyone!
